I would like to introduce myself to some of you who may not know me. My name is Kathy Pluhar and I have stepped in as President of the Art League this season; one year early while our much loved Anne Anderson recovers from summer surgery. We’ll miss Anne and look forward to seeing her smiling face back at the Art League and back in the Friday oil painting class. I know that I have huge shoes to fill but with the help of a very knowledgeable and hard working board we will get the job done. There are so many new and exciting programs added this year that you will unquestionably have a hard time choosing so I say “do it all”. Okay, maybe not all, but do take advantage of wonderful artists/instructors who will be coming from half way around the globe to teach at our Ocean Reef Art League. There are programs for every level of artist from rank beginner to accomplished experts, and even for children/grandchildren. There are classes/workshops for everything from painting and sculpture to basketry and beading. There are clubs that meet to discuss books, orchids and photography or just to “stitch and bitch”. There are field trips to go on, art show openings to attend: the list is almost endless as you will see when you look through this newsletter. Above all the Art League is a place for fun and friendship. We are most fortunate to have this unique community within Ocean Reef. Please join us this season for a spectacular time. Join the Art League and Join the Fun!

Most of you by now are thinking about your returns to "Paradise". After the first season in this beautiful new building, we have ironed out most all the bugs and are ready, equipped and waiting for you with the most diversified program schedule yet.

The workshop and class chairmen have worked diligently to bring world class instructors to the Art League this season. I welcome the addition of Rodney Jackson, Ray Missell and Chuck Ross to our sculpting and woodworking programs and know that they will be invaluable to the Art League. Johnny Velasco will be my number one guy again this season. I couldn't do my job without his unwavering support and talent of juggling everything I throw at him. HE: is standing atop on unusually green hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in New England. Even though HE is wearing a marine-worthy slicker and hat, He is soaking wet. Rain is pouring all over him and everything in sight. To top it all off HE is crying, the tears streaming down his face.

HE SAId: I can’t stand this any longer. I just can’t. I’m turning into green mold.

SHE SAId: What can’t you stand?

HE SAId: This weather. This unrelenting rain. I want my Ocean Reef and I really want my Art League. Easter comes, the Art League closes for the season . . .and then what? I go North for a lovely summer and all it does is rain! And it’s been cold. I am miserable. I have no Palette Pals to talk to, no workshops or classes to contemplate.

SHE SAId: Enough, already. Right now we all feel this way. Maybe the sun will come. Annie says, “The sun will come out tomorrow.” Have a little faith. Think of it this way. In no time we will be back at the Reef. You want to feel better? Send in your membership dues now. And if you really want to feel better, maybe you can part with a little more money and donate it to the Art League.

She is absolutely right. The Art League is like one of those amazing wines that never spoil and improve with age. Our 2009-10 season exists on paper. New classes, returning classes, workshops, trips are all here waiting for you! They wait for you to fill out your membership form. They need you to become a reality. Renew your old friendships, make some new ones. Take a risk and try something new. Improve your existing skills. This is the place where you cannot fail. And is there a more beautiful and at the same time, useful place, fun place to spend time than in the Art League? Send in your membership now and begin the journey back to Ocean Reef and the Art League. We’re waiting. . . .

The 2009-2010 season at the Art League will have 10 shows and a record number of artists exhibiting. Many of our own members and instructors will show along with professional artists from Key West, Key Largo and Miami. Bob and Barbara Gintel will start off the season with their fabulous photography for the month of November. In december Phyllis Foster and her invaluable team will host the New Works Show "You Be The Judge", when again, we will all have the chance to vote for our favorite pieces of art in many mediums. Twenty-five artists will have shows in January, February and March, in five openings. Following will be the always popular Associates Show hosted by Sally Weisleder, Bardee Wyer and Judy Astbury. The Nantucket Basket Show and the time-honored Easter Show always ends our season. We invite you to come to the openings, meet each artist, and see what they have been working on. Whether you are interested in oil, acrylic, watercolor, clay, photography, pottery, woodworking, mixed media, jewelry, scrapbooking, pastels, stained glass, papier mache, polymer clay, bronze, stone or needlepoint, there will be much for you to look at and enjoy. From the front door, past the gift shop and into the main gallery, there will be art everywhere! We hope to see you at the Art League.

november 19 - "all the president's pastries"- Twenty-five years in the White House- A memoir by Roland Mesnier with Christian Malard (French journalist/expert on American politics) as co-writer. An inspirational rags-to-riches story. A journey from France to the White House. The character, tastes, and obsessions of five American presidents and first ladies.

January 21 - " The 19th Wife" by david ebershoff This saga moves between a riveting contemporary murder mystery and the memoirs of Ann Eliza Young, Brigham Young's 19th wife. Very engaging and informative historically and exploring the Mormon faith and polygamy. February 18 - "people of the book" by Geraldine brooks"As a rare book expert analyzes the famed "Savajevo Haggadah", one of the earliest Jewish volumes ever to be illuminated with images, mysteries unfold revealing 6 generations of Jewish history , wars, inquisitions, and family tragedies. March 18 - " The reader" by bernhard schlinkThe touching and poignant relationship between fifteen year old Michael Berg and a women twice his age, who becomes his lover. She then disappears and he next sees her when she is on trial for heinous war crimes, but won't defend herself. Philosophically and morally arresting piece. april 15 - "sarah's Key" by Tatiana de rosnay A shocking , profoundly moving and morally challenging story. Haunting. When a French Jewish family is rounded up by the Nazis during WWII, a small boy is hidden and locked in a cupboard. It's a game. The mother doesn't realize she won't be returning. Gripping and well constructed. Prior to the review there will be clips of a film at 3:00p.m. as a tie in. "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis." It is directed by Vittorio de Sica.

Next we would rough out the bowl and set aside to dry to be finished in the future. After that we would complete a thin walled bowl using a roughed out seasoned and dried bowl. This will provide the student the opportunity to complete the entire process of rough turning and re-chucking to complete the dry seasoned item from start to finish without waiting for 6 months. This project will require the student to learn good tool control and how to sharpen their tools for the task. Next we can make a covered side grain container or end grain box.Seasoned dry wood is required for this project. This is also is a good exercise and will require accurate turning to make sure the cover will fit correctly. I also like to include the process of turning a perfect sphere the way it was done to turn billiard balls in the old days. This is an interesting exercises and helps honing their skills. In case your turners are more experienced we can do some multi center turning such as a winged bowl with a off- set and detached wing.Fee: $385

Gail Moss has agreed to return and will engross us with a fascinating lecture to be held at the Cultural Center on Tuesday, February 23 at 4:00p.m. “ The World through Rembrandt’s Eyes”. Come see and hear all about the most beloved painter of all time. In this lecture and slide show, Gail Moss will show you Rembrandt’s world and how it influenced his masterworks. More then any other artist, Rembrandt was able to paint what it looked like to feel; when you are happy or sad, in love or looking for love, full of murderous passion or sweet compassion. Get a look at these paintings for yourself and see how they were created. Gail will also show her own slides of Rembrandt paintings taken this summer on a trip to St. Petersburg Russia.
