I. Definition and Origin of ZINC
◦Zinc is a chemical element with the symbol Zn and atomic number 30.◦Zinc was named by the alchemist Paracelsus from the word “Zinke” which means prong or tooth. German chemist Andreas Sigismund Marggraf is credited with discovering pure metallic zinc in 1746.◦Zinc in nutrition, is an essential Micronutrient and Mineral in both plants and animals.
II. Functions of ZINC
◦Cellular metabolism & required for the catalytic activity of100 enzymes.
◦Immune function, protein & wound healing DNA synthesis, and cell division.
