GARDENERS MAILBAG
BY NEIL SPERRY
Dear Neil: I would like to
build a flower bed around
the trunk of a fruitless mul-
berry. The grass has died
away as the trees roots got
bigger and bigger. I would
like to have the color there,
lus Id like to conceal the
oots. Will it harm the trunk
if I put 10 or 12 inches of soil
around it?
This is a common idea, butits not necessarily a goodone. If its too dark for grass,
then its too dark for almostany type of flower. Plus,
adding soil over the roots ofa tree or up and around its
trunk are not good practices.Soil compacts over time, andif you cover a significant por-
tion (30 percent or more) ofa trees root system, you run
a real risk of root loss. Add-ing wet soil around the wood
of the trunk cant be good, either. Your best bet in thisspecific situation would be
to plant a groundcover be-neath the tree. Choose one
that can tolerate both sunand shade. Mulberries live
20 to 30 years, and you dontwant to go to a ton of trouble,
then lose your groundcoverwhen its eventually ex-posed to full sunlight. Asian
asmine and purple winter-creeper would be two excel-
lent options. Also, you couldposition round concretestepping stones in a decora-
tive arrangement within thegroundcover bed. You could
then put large pots filledwith colorful annuals, or
plants with textural inter-est in place during the grow-ing season. In the winter the
pots would go away and thestones would be neutral ele-
ments in the design.
Dear Neil: What do the
terms determinate and
indeterminate mean in ref-
erence to tomato varieties?
Which is better for Texas?
It has to do with theplants growth patterns.
Determinate tomatoes are
shorter varieties, gener-ally reaching 5 to 6 feet andthen stopping. Their fruit
production and harvest areusually more concentrated
into a specific period of time.Thats advantageous for
commercial growers whoneed to get into a field, har-
vest their crop, then moveon. Indeterminate plants, bycomparison, continue grow-
ing well beyond the 5- or 6-foot range. As they continue
to grow, they continue toflower and set fruit. Thatsso long as weather condi-
tions and overall plant vigorare conducive to fruit set
(often, they are not). Eithertype can be grown in Texas.
Usually its not the plants
growth habit that ends its
productive time in our gar-den, but the onset of reallyhot weather for the spring
crop and the first frost forfall tomatoes.
Dear Neil: If you have a
riding lawn mower, is it bet-
ter to catch clippings or to let
them shoot out the side? The answer is actually the
same for riding and walk-be-
hind mowers. Its just a bitmore cumbersome to have
to climb down off a rider toempty a bag. The truth isthat clippings are beneficial
to the lawn if you follow afew simple rules. After all,
they contain the nutrientsyou have so faithfully add-
ed, plus theyre good sources
of organic matter. However,
its important that they beshredded as thoroughly aspossible (mulching). Its
the same concept that fig-ures in with hard candy - it
breaks down more quickly ifits chewed into smaller piec-
es. Mowing on 4- or 5-dayintervals is critical during
the late spring and summerwhen the grass is growingat its fastest pace. Also, you
must only use high-qualitysources of nitrogen fertil-
izer. Fast-release nitrogenincreases the risk of thatchformation. Thats organic
matter that will not breakdown quickly. It compacts
and forms an impenetrablelayer between the grass run-
ners and the top of the soil.
If you do decide to go with
bagging, use the clippingsas mulch, or work them intothe compost, but dont plug
up our landfills with them.
Dear Neil: How much
damage does ball moss do
to live oaks? We have trees
on rural property in the Hill
Country, and they have someon their branches.
Ball moss is a sister to
Spanish moss. Both are epi-phytic plants (they depend
on other plants for support, but they are not parasitic inany way). Actually, they are
in the genus Tillandsia inthe bromeliad plant family.
Pineapples are their cous-ins. Moving on from the bot-
any class, the only harm ball
moss will do is to shade the
twigs and branches. Copper-based fungicides will reduceinfestations, but check the
Texas A&M Plant Pathol-ogy Web site for directions.
Copper-based products canbe harmful to other plants
nearby. Or, contact a licensedarborist.

TEEN HEADACHES
Between 50 and 75 percent of allteens report suffering from headachesat least once a month. These head-aches can be caused by various trig-gers. Illnesses such as viral or sinusinfections, strep throat, allergies, andurinary tract infections can be accom-panied by a headache. Fever and head-aches may also occur together. Teensoften do not eat properly or drink fluids, and they may skip meals. These habitscan lead to hunger and dehydration, which are common headache triggers.Using alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines, diet pills, or other drugs may cause
headaches, among other negative ef-fects. Minor head injuries and certainfoods and food additives may triggerheadaches. Prescribed medicationsthat teens take for acne or birth control

THE COUNSELING CORNER
By THE AMERICAN COUNSELINGSSOCIATION
Most couples look forward to theime and opportunities retirementan bring. And they should. It allowsouples quality time together and a
hance to do things that youve bothooked forward to.
But sometimes retirement can alsoadd stress to a marriage. Its importanto realize retirement means more thanust not working. It always brings very
significant changes in ones life. One change is the loss of identity
that often accompanies leaving a job.ost of us, whether male or female,
define ourselves with that job title thatwe use in response to the what do youdo question. But when no longer beingthat vice president or departmentmanager, its common to experience asense of diminished self-worth becauseyou are no longer doing something of
value.Depression can result, especially forsomeone who has been dedicated to
a job and developed few interests orfriends outside the workplace. Suchdepression, and the health problems itmay bring, can certainly add stress toa marriage.
Money can also be a source of mari-tal stress after retirement. Retirement
incomes seldom match pre-retirementpay checks, yet expenses may be evenhigher. Medical bills might increase, ortravel and other retirement activitiesmay cost more than planned for.
Even the extra time together thatretirement brings can sometimes bea source of stress. For many wives, retirement can mean twice as muchhusband and half as much money. Anewly-retired spouse may interruptthe established daily routine of his orher spouse, expecting to be the centerof attention now that work no longercalls. Or that extra time together maybring forward problems that were ig-nored when the demands of a job kept
a couple apart for significant parts ofthe day.Does retirement always bring stress
and trouble to a marriage? Of coursenot. Most couples handle retirementextremely well and enjoy their goldenyears together.
But dont ignore the warning signs ofproblems that retirement might bring.Retirement-related marriage problems
wont magically disappear. If retirement is placing a strain on
a marriage, see it as a challenge andseek help if the problems are serious. There are counseling professionalswho specialize in retirement issues aswell as relationship issues. What theyhave to offer can help make possible arelationship in which marriage part-ners are not just retired, but happyand satisfied.

Texas is the leading horsestate in the United States.Although estimates of ab-solute numbers vary, most
sources indicate Texas hasabout 10 percent of the U.S.horse population, or justover one million head.
The leading county forhorse numbers in Texas is
arris County (Houston)with about 60,000 horseswhile Dallas County comesin second at 52,000. Eachof the five leading counties
are metropolitan counties.Even though Wise Countyis not listed in the top 10statewide, a surveyconducted by Tex-as A&M suggeststhere are just over
5,000 horses in thecounty with a totaleconomic impact inthe neighborhood of$54,000,000. Thatfigure includesbarns, trailers, health care, equip-ment, etc.
Many people in the countyown and enjoy horses for

Dear Savvy Senior
My husband (whos 60)
as recently diagnosed with ype 2 diabetes and was
hocked when the doctor toldim that hes probably had
t or prediabetes for many ears. My question is whatdetermines prediabetes and
how can you know if youhave it?
Non-diabetic Donna
Dear Donna,
Underlying todays grow-ing epidemic of type 2 dia-
betes is a much larger epi-demic called prediabetes
- which is when the bloodsugar levels are higher thannormal but not high enough
to be called diabetes. Hereswhat you should know.
Pre-DiabetesAlmost everyone who has
type 2 diabetes has passedthrough prediabetes first.According to the Ameri-
can Diabetes Associationthere are around 54 million
people in the United Stateswho have prediabetes. If left
untreated, it almost alwaysturns into diabetes within10 years. And even if its not
high enough to be labeleddiabetes, high blood sugar
can significantly harm yourbody causing high blood
pressure and damage toyour heart, blood vessels,
kidneys and eyes.Do you have it?
Prediabetes is like the
warning light in your carthat comes on when youre
about to run out of gas, let-ting you know theres a prob-lem looming, but you still
have time to do somethingabout it. But, prediabetes
can be tricky too because itusually causes no outward
symptoms, so most peoplethat have it dont realize it.The only way to know for
sure is to get a simple bloodtest done by your doctor. (Tip:
Check your personal risk atwww.yourdiseaserisk.com
- click on diabetes). Hereare the factors that increaseyour risk of prediabetes and
diabetes. If you fall into oneor more of these categories
you need to get tested: Over age 45. Prediabe-
tes risk increases with age. Are overweight with a
body mass index (BMI) of 25
or more. To calculate yourBMI see www.nhlbisup-
port.com/bmi. The heavieryou are the greater your
risk. Also, having excess fataround your waist, rather
than around the hips andthighs, increases risk.Have a family history of
diabetes. Have high blood pres-
sure (140/90 or higher). Have low HDL (good)
cholesterol and high triglyc-
erides. If youre Hispanic, Asian,
African or Native American. Had gestational diabe-
tes (high blood sugar duringpregnancy) or gave birth toa baby weighting over nine
pounds.Good News
Being diagnosed with pre-diabetes doesnt mean that
youre destined for type 2diabetes. Prediabetes canactually be reversed - and
diabetes prevented - bymaking some simple but
consistent lifestyle changesthat include: Losing weight: If youre
overweight, losing just 5to 10 percent of your body
weight coupled with mod-erate exercise can reduce
your risk of developing full-fledged diabetes by nearly
60 percent. Exercising: Regular ex-
ercise (about 30 minutes atleast five days per week)helps control your weight
and blood glucose level. Talkto your doctor about what
types of exercise might beappropriate for you. Eating healthy: Eat
whole grains, fruits and veg-etables high in fiber, limit
fat consumption and go easyon the salt and sugar. Visit
www.diabetes.org and clickon Nutrition and Recipesfor healthy diabetic food
tips, recipes and other nutri-tion information.
Not smoking: Smokersare more likely to become
diabetic.Note: Oral diabetes medi-
cations may also be an op-
tion to reduce your risk ofdeveloping full-blown dia-
betes. Or, if you have highblood pressure or abnormal
cholesterol levels, medica-tion for these conditionsmay be necessary to lower
your risks.

Prediabetes: What you should knowSENIOR SAVVY
Grooming for Fluffy and Fido improves their
appearance, but it could make them sick from
an unlikely source. In the process of grooming,
your pet may ingest or swallow fleas carrying
the tapeworm larvae. And tapeworms, by any
measuring stick, are not pleasant.
Tapeworms are not life-threatening, but
they can be disgusting, said Dr. Thomas
Craig, professor of parasitology in Texas A&M
niversitys College of Veterinary Medicine &
iomedical Sciences.
Cats and dogs can be the primary hosts,
while adult fleas are the secondary hosts.
Craig says the segmented adult tapeworm
lives in the small intestine of the host. When
the segments are passed in the animals feces, the tapeworm eggs are released.
A larval flea eats the tapeworm egg and then
the flea larva progress through the pupa stage
in a cocoon. The flea develops into an adult flea
that is eaten by a cat or dog, Craig adds.
Movement and vibrations trigger the hatch-
ing of the pupa into an adult flea. When the
adult flea jumps on your pet to take a blood
meal, the pet may eat the flea, carrying the
tapeworm larvae and thus become the host for
the larval stage to complete its development
into an adult tapeworm, said Dr. Craig.
Tapeworms attach, with hooks or suckers, to
the intestinal lining of the host. Since they do
not have a digestive tract, tapeworms absorb
nutrients directly through their integument

Have you given your child a hugoday? Not the type with your arms,
ut a hug from a safety belt. All pas-sengers, regardless of age, should usea safety belt while riding in a vehicle.
he Texas Department of State Healthervices (DSHS) is helping parents
ake the best choice for keeping theirids safe.
Child safety seats provide protectionor small occupants whose bodies are
still growing. Restraints are availableor children of different ages and sizes.ven with the right child restraint, the
ay it is installed and used can havean effect on its performance.
When children outgrow child safe-y seats, usually at about 40 pounds, any people assume the child is ready
or the vehicles regular safety belt. Notso, say the experts at DSHS. A cars
safety belts are designed for adultsand do not fit children properly.
If a child has outgrown a safety seatut is less than 4 feet 9 inches tall, theyill need a booster seat, said Frank
uera, training director of DSHS Safeiders Traffic Safety program. It lifts
he child so that the seat belt fits cor-ectly.
With a booster seat: The lap belt will be placed low on
he childs hips, rather than on the
hilds belly. The shoulder belt will cross the
enter of the childs chest. The childs knees will bend at the
dge of the booster seat for better com-
fort and fit. A cars safety belts, which are de-
signed to fit adults, wont fully restraina child in a crash. Using a booster seatwill better protect your child from be-
ing thrown from the vehicle, or thrownaround inside it, during a crash.
Luera also points out that airbagspose a risk of death or serious injury
for children.Even in newer vehicles that have
airbags with suppression systems, which is a new technology that allowsairbags to adjust deployment based on
the occupant, children 12 and undershould ride in the back seat, he said.
Vehicles with airbags display warn-ing messages regarding this on thesun visors and in the vehicle owners
manual.The Texas Department of State
Health Services, working with a varietyof local community groups, coordinates
a statewide child safety seat distribu-tion and education campaign. Thisprogram provides child safety seats to
low-income families and promotes cor-rect use of safety seats. Low-income
families can receive a free child safetyseat by attending a one- hour class to
learn how to use the seat correctly.Traffic crashes injure or kill hun-
dreds of young children every year
many of whom are unbuckled or im-properly restrained while riding in ve-
hicles. You can keep your child safe by using
an approved car seat, booster seat or
safety belt consistently and properly. Itis important to make sure your child is
as safe as possible in your car.To find out how to receive a child
safety seat, call 1-800-252-8255 or visit

By CHRIS ROSPRIMPresident
Greater Denton/Wise CountyAssoc. of Realtors
Whos on first? You areThe last thing you want dur-
ing a real estate transaction isa replay of the famous Abbottand Costello Whos on First?routine. Not only is it helpfulto understand all the playersroles during the process, butthis knowledge can help youdetermine what information toshare with which parties. Hereare the basics.
Customer or client?
If you are working with aeal estate agent to buy prop-rty, you are that agents cli-nt, right? Not necessarily. You
ight be a client or you could becustomer. While these termsound similar, dont think theyre interchangeable. They con-ote different responsibilitiesn behalf of the agent. You are a client only whenou hire an agent to representou. Buyers often sign a writ-en agreement when hiring
buyers agent. Your buyersgent can help you search forroperties, give you informa-ion about financing, assist youn preparing offers, and otherelated matters. However, an agent can also
elp you with these matters
ven if you dont hire that per-on to represent you. In thisase, you are a customer rath-r than a client. For example,ou might work with the sell-ng agent (also called a listinggent) of a home. Typically, theisting agent will provide younformation and assist youithout offering opinions anddvice.
The listing agent owes herprimary loyalty to the seller. As such, you dont want toshare any information thatyou wouldnt want the seller
to know. For example, if youmake an offer of $175,000 butare willing to go as high as$195,000, you should not tellthe listing agent. The listingagent would be obligated topass this information on to herclient.
You also might work withwhats called a subagent. Asubagent also represents theproperty owner in coopera-tion with the listing agent. Youalso are considered a customerwhen working with a subagent,so dont lose sight that the sub-agent represents the seller.
On the other hand, if youhire a buyers agent, that per-son must put your interestsabove all others. So if yourbuyers agent finds out thatthe seller is moving to anotherstate this month and has re-ceived no offers thus far, youcan expect your agent to sharethat information with you.
Regardless of whether youare a client or a customer, allagents must treat you hon-estly.
How can you be sure
whos who?
Real estate law in Texasrequires a broker to provide
you a form, Information AboutBrokerage Services, at the firstsubstantive meeting betweenthe two of you. This form spellsout the differences betweenlisting agents, subagents andbuyers agents. The form alsooutlines their duties to you.If you have any doubt aboutwhat your relationship is withan agent, be sure to clarify this
before proceeding.An intermediary
It is possible for one brokerto serve as an intermediary be-tween the buyer and seller on
the same transaction, as longas that broker complies withcertain legal provisions. Anintermediary acts in a man-ner that does not favor oneside over the other. The partiesmust give written consent tosuch an agreement.
The intermediary may notdisclose certain information tothe other party, such as confi-dential details or anything oneof the parties tells the brokernot to disclose. The broker also
must not disclose whether theseller will accept less than hisasking price or whether thebuyer is willing to pay morethan the amount written in
his offer, unless this obligationis waived by the seller or buyerin writing.
Regardless of the choice youmake about agency represen-tation, I recommend you workwith agents and brokers whoare Texas Realtors. Realtors gobeyond the legal requirementsby adhering to a code of profes-sional conduct. For more in-formation, I invite you to visitTexasRealEstate.com www.texasrealestate.com.
