than 100 people attended
the dedication ceremony of
the Barbara Rhine Memo-
rial Basketball Court at

The Revs. Jim Dean
and Fredric L. Utz led the
ceremony in memory of
ecatur native Barbara
hine, who was a mentor
and friend of Wise County
youth throughout her life-
time. Utz described Rhine
as a sweetheart, noting
her service as a youth coun-
selor at the First United
ethodist Church, as well
as her tireless devotion to
the youth at Oak Grove.
Surrounding her husband,
an, her son, Steven, and
grandson, Michael, were
other family members,
friends and former col-
leagues.
Rhine passed away in
September 2008 from com-
plications of a brain tu-

the basketball court came
from friends, family and
coworkers at Legend Bank
after she passed away. The
basketball court is nestled
under tall oak trees in a se-

Down syndrome can be detected before a child is born. The first of two types
of prenatal tests used to detect Down syndrome is both cost-effective and easy
to perform. Because screening tests estimate the risk that a baby has Down
syndrome, but cannot provide a definitive answer, they are used to help parents
decide whether to undergo more testing. Diagnostic tests are about 99 percent
reliable in detecting Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities,
but they are invasive. For this reason, diagnostic testing was once reserved for
women age 35 and older. However, the American College of Obstetrics and
Gynecology now recommends that all pregnant women be offered screening
with the option for invasive diagnostic testing for Down syndrome.
A womans pregnancy is one of the most important tim es in her life. At our
practice, we understand that not all pregnancies are alike; therefore we provide
the most personalized and up to date care. For further information about
todays column, call WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-
626-8008. Our office is conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201,
Decatur. New patients are welcome.
Pregnant women are considered high risk for complications from the flu.
Flu shots are available for Dr. Smiths pregnant patients ONLY. Call for an
appointment.
P.S. Down syndrome, which is a condition involving extra genetic material that
causes mental and physical delays in child development, affects about one in
every 800 babies.

forced the Warriors to settle for a field goal. Kevin Haferland's13-yard touchdown run gave the Eagles a 6-3 lead going intohalftime. In the second half, the Liberty offense reached thered zone and threatened to score three times, but the Deca-tur defense held its ground and forced a turnover on downsor an attempted field goal. Damien Loving came through forthe Eagles in the second half with a 12-yard touchdown runand a 35-yard touchdown run. Cameron Harrison led the De-catur defense with several key tackles and an interceptionlate in the game to seal the victory. Haferland and Lovingcombined for 153 total rushing yards to lead the Decaturrunning attack. Their success can be attributed to great playby fullback Max Junkert and offensive linemen Kevin Lindseyand Matt Jones.

Dear Neil: I have three
crape myrtles that are ap-roximately 20 feet tall. They
are about 4 feet apart in thecenter of my flowerbed. Their
leaves are sparse and notdark green. There have beenvery few flowers. Is there a
ertilizer we should be ap-lying?Without seeing the plants,
its difficult to tell. Severalthings pop out instantly, however. Mainly, thats notnearly enough room forcrape myrtles of that height. They should be 12 or 14 feetapart to allow them to growto full size. Crowded plantsoften shade one anotherand cause the entire massto quit blooming properly.Crape myrtles need nitrogento grow and subsequently,to bloom. Apply it in April,June and August, essen-tially at the same times that
youre feeding your lawnand landscape.
Dear Neil: How do you
propagate figs from an exist-ing backyard tree?
Theyre very much likeany other shrub, in thattheyre started from cut-tings. Ive had good luck root-
ing semi-hardwood cuttingsin June and July. Trim theleaves in half with a knife orsharp scissors, to reduce theamount of leaf surface areathats exposed to the dry-ing conditions. I have postedgeneral information on root-ing all types of cuttings atmy Web site, www.neilsper-ry.com. Youll find it underthe Most-Asked Questionsbutton, under General. Igenerally refer readers thereto avoid redundant answersto all the plant propagationquestions that come in.
Dear Neil: Ive had beds
of vinca groundcovers foryears. About a month ago, it
looked like they were dying. The leaves shriveled and felloff. The plants got better, then
they did it again. Each time,it followed a light shower. It
also looks like something iseating all of its leaves. What
is it, and what can I do to
stop it? You have leafrollers. You
can see the evidence of thelarvae inside the rolls ofleaf tissues. Theyre verycommon with trailing vincagroundcovers, and they nor-mally start showing up bymid-summer. The rains werecoincidental. Use a systemic
insecticide, either as a sprayor in granular form in Juneeach year. Repeat as soon asyou see them coming backlater in the summer, shouldthat happen. For now, con-sider trimming the plantsrather heavily to removemany of the bare stems. The
vincas new growth this falland even into early winterwill quickly restore the bedto better condition.
Dear Neil: My 8- or 9-
year-old Moorpark apricottrees have never had blooms,
much less fruit. Is there any-thing I can do to encourage
them to have flowers andfruit?
The advice of experts is toexpect crops of apricots, atthe best, only one out of fouryears in Texas. The reasonis that they have very lowchilling requirements. Bythe time January is aboutover, theyve met their needs
for winter cold, and a warmspell can bring them intobud. Sadly, most years wehave additional freezes af-ter that time, and the buds, flowers or fruit are lost foranother year. Best advice isto hope for sustained coldduring the winter, followedby a frost-free early spring.
Theyre not at all depend-able in Texas, and your re-sults are common.
Dear Neil: We are fairly
new to Texas, and were stilllearning about many of the
native trees. Were seeingblack spots on many of theleaves of our live oaks. Grass
and shrubs are unaffected. Can you point us in the right
direction?Contact a licensed arbor-
ist who specializes in oakissues. Normally, oaks aregreat landscaping invest-ments, but oak wilt is cer-tainly present, and it is aserious threat. You need ahighly skilled tree expertto diagnose the issues andprescribe the best options incase this might be oak wilt. There is also as great dealof information available on-line from both Texas A&MHorticulture and Plant Pa-thology and from the Texas
Forest Service. Get the prosinvolved right away.
Dear Neil: My neighbor
planted two cottonwoods be-tween our houses about nine
years ago. Im having trou-ble with my foundation now.
Could the cottonwoods rootsbe causing damage?
Cottonwoods have veryshallow root systems, andthey use copious amountsof water as well. Add thosefacts, and they tell you thatcottonwoods could cause agreat deal of harm. The same
certified arborist describedabove could be of great helpto you. At a minimum, youneed to have a root barrierput in place near your foun-dation to deter root growthbeneath it.
!
Have a question youdlike Neil to consider? Mail
it to him in care of the WiseCounty Messenger, P.O. Box149, Decatur, TX 76234 or e-
mail him at [email protected]. Neil regrets
that he cannot reply to ques-tions individually.

IS PEDICULOSIS BUGGINGYOUR KIDS?
Pediculosis is a fancy word for aninfection caused by a commonchildhood pesthead lice. Head
lice are parasites that survive onhuman blood. They cannot jump orfly, but they are transmitted by the
sharing of hats, combs, hair ties, headrests, and pillows. Head liceare six-legged tan creatures aboutthe size of sesame seeds. Their
eggs, called nits, are smaller and areoften mistaken for dandruff. Infectedchildren will feel tingling and itching
sensations on their scalps and shouldbe treated with an over-the-counterlice removal shampoo, following
the directions carefully. Wash (inhot water) all combs, brushes, andanything that the infected childs
scalp could have come into contactwith in order to eradicate these pests.

4 MINUTES A DAY
4 minutes of revolutionary exercise equals 45-60 minutes of traditional
exercise (i.e. weight lifting and running)! Did you know that the calories you burn are related to
the amount of oxygen your body consumes? What if you could work 12 times the muscle cells as
traditional exercises?
Since I started 4 Minute Fitness 3 months ago, I have lost 35 pounds and have gone from a size24 to a size 16. Ive never been an athlete, but I can do anything for 4 minutes. I am so excited for
my future. For the first time in my life, I am physically fit, says Elizabeth Haley-Beaver,LVN from Decatur.

The Wise County Raid-

competed in the Western
ivision 2009 Super Series
ational Tournament July
18-24 in Woodland Park,
Colo. They were named
2009 Super Series 11-and-
under Minor National
Champions after going un-
defeated in seven games.Opening ceremonies were
July 18. The team checked
in that morning and began
trading pins with other
players from other teams.
This is a tradition the boys
always look forward to. Fol-
lowing this was the Parade
of Teams around the ball
field displaying their ban-
ners. The day ended with
skills competitions, which
included a home run derby,
round the horn and base
running. Cameron Starnes
of Bridgeport won the first
place trophy for the fastest
base runner.
Pool play began July
19. The Raiders faced the
Oklahoma Blackhawks for
the first game with a fi-
nal score of 10-7. The sec-
ond game of the day was
against the LS Express
with the score of 10-6. On
July 20, the Raiders played
two games again, and beat
the North Texas Bombers
13-3 and Mojo Silver 16-0.
Bracket play began July
21. The Raiders were the
No. 1 seed and played the
Oklahoma Blackhawks
again and won 18-6. The
boys had a day off July
22, and they attended the
Colorado Rockies game and
participated in a parade on
the field before the game.
Bracket play resumed
July 23. The Raiders played
the LS Express again and
won 13-6, which qualified
them for the championship
game later that night.
The championship game
was delayed for two hours
by rain, and the Raiders
were set to face off with LS
Express again. The entire
game was a hard fought
battle for both teams, but
the Raiders won the title
6-3.
They were awarded the
2009 Super Series Nation-
al Trophy and individual
trophies for each player.
The players also received
Super Series gold watches
and gold championship
rings.
Raiders players Caiden
Berry of Paradise, Shane
Buechele of Arlington,
Corbin Coleman of Bridge-port and William Suther-

ries qualifier tournament,
one USSSA qualifier tour-
nament and the USSSA
State Championship.
They also had a third
place Super Series quali-
fier finish and won second
place in the Super Series
State Tournament.
The Raiders attributetheir success to the con-
stant support of family,
friends and sponsors, and
the team was told my sev-

Benefiting the Womens Health Program at Wise Regional
By GARY CLAYTON
Wise Co. Extension Agent
If you have followed the major me-
dia outlets lately you already knowabout the Raspberry crazy ant.
This relatively new ant was discov-ered in 2002 when Tom Raspberry,a professional pest management
provider from Pearland discovereda population of a new pest ant near
asadena in Harris County. Hugenumbers of the ant literally covered
the landscape in industrial parksand residences.
In Texas, the common name is
aspberry crazy ant. The descriptionof the Texas version is very similar
to the species de-scription for the
Caribbean crazyant.
High numbersof the ant have
been found in lo-calized spot infes-tations in south-
east Houston andthe surrounding
area. Other infes-tations have been
confirmed in Brazoria, Fort Bend,Galveston, Hardin, Jefferson, Lib-erty, Montgomery, Orange, Walker
and Wharton Counties. According toTexas AgriLife entomologists, this
ant has the potential to spread wellbeyond the current range, but be-
ing a semi-tropical ant its potentialnorthern distribution may be limited
by colder weather conditions. The ant is about 1/8 inch long, red-
dish brown and nests in the landscapewhere queens, eggs, larvae and pupaecan be found. A colony contains mul-
tiple queens and can contain millionsof ants. This ant does not sting and
it will displace other ants, includingfire ants in the environment.
Entomologists are unsure at thistime if this ant will impact crop pro-duction. If you suspect this ant might
be on your property please contactme at (940) 627-3341.
