When we embark on the road of life, it is never initially clear how our trails may wind, or when they may reveal an impasse. We are not furnished with a map when we are welcomed into this world. Left to find our own way, we sometimes travel through seemingly unforgiving terrain and encounter insurmountable mountains of change. For 70 years, Samost Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) has served as a compass for the community during those times, as we help direct clients toward help, hope, and independence. When we took our first steps as a social services agency decades ago, that is when we began taking our journey, right along with you. We have razed obstacles that have worked against us, such as challenging economic climates. With our passion for the community to fuel us, we devoted efforts to finding ways to overcome each roadblock. As we faced an ever-increasing rise in the number of food-insecure households, our Betsy & Peter Fischer Food Pantries distributed $179,440 worth of food in 2013 to fight hunger. In 2014, we expect an even greater demand due to the reduction of food stamp benefits through the national SNAP program, and will again do what is necessary to meet that unique and complex challenge. Also this year, as the New Jersey unemployment rate hovered at 16 percent for individuals with disabilities, JFCS launched a groundbreaking program called Soups & Sweets. For those individuals with special needs and an interest in cooking, this program trains and certifies students in the culinary arts so they may transition into the working world, full of confidence. Soups & Sweets has seen over 50 percent of its graduates move on to gainful employment. Understanding the ever-increasing population of seniors in the counties we serve, our senior services program was busy throughout the year, helping them to live independently and safely at home. Our trained Patient Partners volunteers devoted 600 hours to accompanying seniors to doctor visits, recording treatment information, and acting as patient advocates. Additionally, through the Kosher Meals-on-Wheels program, we distributed 11,250 meals to seniors and homebound individuals to continue providing them with easily accessible and healthy nourishment. Our counseling department continues responding to community needs by bringing programs to life, such as our recently expanded Havurah Addiction Support Group, helping recovering addicts to rebuild their lives. We also launched the Loss of a Loved One Support Group, which brings support to those who have experienced the devastating loss of a child. In 2013, JFCS guided a number of local women through the tumultuous waters of abuse to find safe harbor through our Project SARAH domestic violence program. JFCS has helped clear an unobstructed route to understanding and empathy, assisting so many of our neighbors through a maze of grief, struggle, confusion, and pain. Our agency will continue to strive to be that compass for our community, as an instrument pointing toward care, compassion, and comfort. We are grateful for the tremendous support of our sponsors, donors, volunteers, board members, and staff who help fulfill the promise of being a dedicated guide for those who rely on us to navigate the way. On behalf of the many clients we serve, we thank you for helping to pave the path ahead with promise, and we look forward to continuing in the direction of hope and healing, with you as our partner.
