31st Sunday of the Year All Saints

The Saints are not born, but made! They are ordinary people like us, of the same flesh and blood as we. But they had the courage to be different, to do the ordinary things of life in the extraordinary way of Christ from whom they drew their courage. They put us to shame with their quiet but strong gentleness, their integrity, their commitment to God and to people in justice and truth and peace. This feast is a feast of awareness and closeness - an awareness of the spiritual world, and the closeness, the communion, of those saints with us.

There are over 10,000 canonized saints. We not only acknowledge the saints whose names we know that appear in the Catholic calendar, but also those unnamed saints in heaven that have lived a faithful and blessed life on earth and attained their eternal reward. The number of the saints includes Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, Jewish people, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and every other brand or type of person, including those who never even explicitly believed.

The mission of the Saints in heaven is best expressed by what St. Therese of Lisieux said: “I will spend my heaven doing good on earth”. Today we give thanks for those who have gone before us and who intercede with God for us. Let us rejoice with them!

Morning Prayer We are happy to resume the Morning Prayer on week days in our church from 2nd November onwards at 7.10 am. We begin the Rosary at 6.45 am and Holy Mass at 7.30 am. First Reading

A reading from the book of the Apocalypse 7:2–4, 9–14

I, John, saw another angel rising where the sun rises, carrying the seal of the living God; he

called in a powerful voice to the four angels whose duty was to devastate land and sea,

'Wait before you do any damage on land or at sea or to the trees, until we have put the seal

on the foreheads of the servants of God.' Then I heard how many were sealed: a hundred

and forty-four thousand, out of all the tribes of Israel.

After that I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race,

tribe and language; they were standing in front of the throne and in front of the Lamb,

dressed in white robes and holding palms in their hands. They shouted aloud, 'Victory to

our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!' And all the angels who were standing in

a circle round the throne, surrounding the elders and the four animals, prostrated

themselves before the throne, and touched the ground with their foreheads, worshipping

God with these words, 'Amen. Praise and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour

and power and strength to our God for ever and ever. Amen.'

One of the elders then spoke and asked me, 'Do you know who these people are, dressed in

white robes, and where they have come from?' I answered him, 'You can tell me, my Lord.'

Then he said, 'These are the people who have been through the great persecution, and they

have washed their robes white again in the blood of the Lamb.'

The word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

R. Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.

The Lord's is the earth and its fullness,

the world and all its peoples.

It is he who set it on the seas;

on the waters he made it firm. R.

Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord?

Who shall stand in his holy place?

The man with clean hands and pure heart,

who desires not worthless things. R.

He shall receive blessings from the Lord?

and reward from the God who saves him.

Such are the men who seek him,

seek the face of the God of Jacob. R.

SECOND Reading

A reading from the first letter of St John 3:1–3

Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us,

by letting us be called God's children;

and that is what we are.

Because the world refused to acknowledge him,

therefore it does not acknowledge us.

My dear people, we are already the children of God

but what we are to be in the future has not yet been revealed;

all we know is, that when it is revealed

we shall be like him

because we shall see him as he really is.

Surely everyone who entertains this hope

must purify himself, must try to be as pure as Christ.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Gospel acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia! Come to me, all you that labour and are burdened,

and I will give you rest, says the Lord. Alleluia!

GOSPEL

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 5:1–12

Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his

disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:

'How happy are the poor in spirit: theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Happy the gentle: they shall have the earth for their heritage.

Happy those who mourn: they shall be comforted.

Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right: they shall be satisfied.

Happy the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them.

Happy the pure in heart: they shall see God.

Happy the peacemakers: they shall be called sons of God.

Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right: theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

'Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny

against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.'

The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank you to all in the Bunbury parish who have supported Catholic Mission Appeals in the past and especially those who are our valued regular givers. The Mission of Catholic Mission, as the Pope’s international mission agency, is to respond to the call to love God and our neighbour by forming individuals and communities as missionary disciples of Jesus

who share their faith in action and through prayer. We do this by: proclaiming the Gospel; serving people in need; acting for peace, justice and creation; in partnership with local churches. We work in over 160 countries worldwide, including remote communities in Australia. We raise funds for these missions by Working with children, Communities and Church Leaders. We also provide Australians with mission leadership formation, educational services and resources and offer opportunities to participate in the work of mission and justice through prayer, action, giving and cross-cultural immersion. Always feel free to contact me if you wish to know more about any of these things. Our focus project this year is the Arrupe Centre in Cambodia who with the support of Catholic Mission aims to reach out to those who have been affected by disability, and give them hope and support to live a fulfilling life. Reflecting the sentiments of Pope Francis’ latest encyclical Fratelli Tutti, Bishop Kike has said: We are here for the common good; to be a more inclusive society and bring also the joy of life everywhere .. we look with a positive vision and with hope and joy and happiness. I ask you to make a donation to the work of Catholic Mission today or any time in the future by: Completing and returning your parish appeal envelope in the donation box in the foyer, or return it to the parish or to me at the Diocesan Office at any time. You can use the envelope to donate by cash, cheque or credit card. You can also give once or become a treasured Mission partner with regular giving.

The envelope also gives you the option of contributing to the Home Mission Fund which supports the missionary work of the Church in remote and indigenous communities in Australia. Or giving a non tax-deductible donation which is used by the many specifically Church activities as opposed to development projects. These include training seminarians and catechists, and building or maintaining church buildings. You can also give via text or online.

New this year is the text giving option: Texting GIVE to 0488 854 436 (please include your parish name in the notes)

Or give online at catholicmission.org.au/cambodia Thank you and remember that our first task is to pray for missionaries and whether you can give a donation or not, please take the envelope to remind you to pray for the work of Catholic Mission. God bless.- Deborah Robertson, Diocesan Director - Bunbury

Alpha had a profound effect on me. In the early part of this century, I joined Alpha as a “good Catholic Woman” believing this new course was good, my services were needed, and maybe it would just add another string to my bow of accomplishments in this parish. However, the Holy Spirit did so many things for me its hard to quantify the strength I gained or express all the gifts I received. I gained a deep personal relationship with my God, and a huge sense of community in this parish that continues to this day. One group of us decided we would follow Nicky Gumball on the journey through the Acts of the Apostle and started meeting as Friday Friends to study and pray together, and for close to 20 years we have been doing just that. The Assumption Prayer Group started on Monday mornings and many a sick person was covered in prayer. When my world was rocked by the revelation my brother had been repeatedly raped by a priest some 44 years earlier, and the consequential loss of faith in the hierarchy by the way he was treated when he revealed that abuse, I just knew in the depths of my heart and despair that God loved me and would never abandon me. That love of God was so bound up in the love of my community that I could not walk away. I needed the spiritual nourishment and the love of my fellow parishioners and Friday Friends to continue my journey in this life. I thank the good Lord for those gifts every day. So many times I have fallen off the wagon and not talked to my Creator but he keeps on keeping on. I know He is there and still loves me for who I am when I lift my head again.

I highly commend Alpha to anyone seeking to strengthen their faith, to explore their

faith, or just want a chance to socialize with like-minded people.

Readings and Commentaries

The feast of All Saints originated in the East early in the fifth century as a commemoration of all martyrs. It appeared in Rome two centuries later but only became established on this date sometime in the papacy of Gregory III (731-741). The spirit of the feast is captured in the Preface: “For today by your gift we celebrate the festival of your city, the heavenly Jerusalem, our mother, where the great array of our brothers and sisters already gives you eternal praise. “Towards her, we eagerly hasten as pilgrims advancing by faith, rejoicing in the glory bestowed upon those exalted members of the Church through whom you give us, in our frailty, both strength and good example.” Today’s Solemnity goes hand in hand with tomorrow’s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. On All Saints’ Day we celebrate the glory of God’s holy ones; on All Souls’ Day we intercede with trust and confidence for those who have gone before us but whose fate we do not know.

the gospel story

reflection Some of God’s blessings we can see, but some blessings are invisible. Talk about some of God’s blessings that you can see. Now talk about some of God’s blessings that you can’t see. Spend a few moments in silence thanking God in your heart for these great gifts.

This gospel story takes place on a mountain top. Mountains are sacred places. Just like Moses went up a mountain to receive the 10 Commandments from God, Jesus now gives his disciples a special set of blessings from God. This story is sometimes called “The Beatitudes” because ‘beatitude’ is an old word that means ‘blessed’. God loves all people but blesses in a special way those people who are sad, people who depend on God, people who care for others, people who are treated unfairly, gentle people, forgiving people.

November begins with two important feast days –

All Saints Day on 1 November and All Souls Day on 2 November. Pope Francis has said that we honour the saints not because they were perfect or did everything right, but rather because they allowed God to touch their lives. The saints, he said, are above all our brothers and sisters ‘who have welcomed the light of God into their hearts and have passed it on to the world.’ Both feast days were also ‘days of hope’, he is reported as saying. The virtue of ‘hope is like a bit like a bit of leaven that enlarges your soul. There are difficult moments in life, but with hope you go forward and keep your eyes on what awaits us. Today is a day of hope; our brothers and sisters are in the presence of God, and we, too, will be there in the Lord’s arms if we follow the path of Jesus’. Hope and faith in God as we continue to negotiate a worldwide pandemic is something we have been praying for. Saying goodbye to loved ones has been particularly difficult this year. There have been limits on how many people can attend funerals. We’ve become adept at using online streaming platforms to ‘attend’ funerals, but they are no substitute for being there. But even if we’ve been able to attend there have been restrictions on physical contact. It’s almost painful to meet with long-absent friends and family and not hug them. The importance of touch is often under-rated. It’s no wonder pets have become so important in this pandemic era. It’s not only the excuse for the walk outside, it’s the fact that they are living beings who appreciate being petted as much as we enjoy having something to cuddle. However, as we celebrate these two important feast days, let us take Pope Francis’ words to heart and consider them days of hope, and let that hope guide and comfort us as we move through the rest of the year. As we commemorate these two important feast days, we pray our prayers of petition. All Saints Day Let us pray in communion with all the saints and martyrs. We bring before you all our needs, trusting that you will hear them, as we pray. Lord hear us God of Peace, we pray that those in authority may follow the example of the saints who worked for peace and love. Lord hear us God of Compassion, bring healing and hope to those who grieve, suffer pain or have been affected in any way by COVID-19. Lord hear us All Souls Day For all the faithful departed in Christ, that perpetual light would shine upon them. Lord hear us Lord of all, in your mercy may all who have died in your friendship know your lasting peace. We pray for [name/s] and those whom are saddened by his/her/their death. Lord hear us In thanksgiving for all of our departed friends, family, and community members, and the many ways in which they touched the lives of everyone around them; may their memory always live on. Lord hear us source: pray.com.au

All Saints’ Day (November 1) All Saints' Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. It should not be confused with All Souls' Day, which is observed on November 2, and is dedicated to those who have died and not yet reached heaven. All Saints' Day was formally started by Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Virgin Mary and all the Martyrs on May 13 in 609 AD. Boniface IV also established All Souls' Day, which follows All Saints.

St. Charles Borromeo (November 4) Saint Charles Borromeo was born on October 2, 1538 at the castle of Arona on Lake Maggiore near Milan. His father was the Count of Arona and his mother a member of the House of Medici. At the age of 12, the young Count Charles Borromeo dedicated himself to a life of service to the Church. The young count suffered from a speech impediment that made him appear slow to those who did not know him. Despite this challenge, he performed well and impressed his teachers. He attended the University of Pavia and learned Latin. He was praised because he was hardworking and thorough. In 1554 his father passed away and although Charles was a teenager, responsibility for his household fell to him. Charles continued in his studies and earned a doctorate in canon and civil law.

In 1559, when his uncle, Cardinal de Medici was elected Pope Pius IV, he made Charles cardinal-deacon and administrator of the Archdiocese of Milan. At the time Charles was still a layman and a young student. Because of his intellectual qualities Charles was entrusted with several important offices connected with the Vatican, and later appointed secretary of state with responsibility for the Papal States. The untimely death of his elder brother brought Charles to a definite decision to be ordained a priest, despite his relatives’ insistence that he marry. Soon after being ordained a priest at age 25, Borromeo was consecrated bishop of Milan.

Working behind the scenes, Saint Charles deserves the credit for keeping the Council of Trent in session when at several points it was on the verge of breaking up. Borromeo encouraged the pope to renew the Council in 1562, after it had been suspended for 10 years. He took upon himself the task of the entire correspondence during the final phase. Because of his work at the Council, Borromeo was unable to take up residence in Milan until the Council concluded.

Eventually, Borromeo was allowed to devote his time to the Archdiocese of Milan, where the religious and moral picture was far from bright. The reform needed in every phase of Catholic life among both clergy and laity was initiated at a provincial council of all the bishops under him. Charles took the initiative in giving a good example. He allotted most of his income to charity, forbade himself all luxury, and imposed severe penances upon himself. He sacrificed wealth, high honours, esteem, and influence to become poor. During the plague and famine of 1576, Borromeo tried to feed 60,000 to 70,000 people daily. To do this he borrowed large sums of money that required years to repay. Whereas the civil authorities fled at the height of the plague, he stayed in the city, where he ministered to the sick and the dying, helping those in want. Eventually, the Archbishop's life of work and toil began to take its toll. In 1584, he became ill with a fever. He returned to Milan where his conditioned worsened. When it became obvious he would die, he was given his last Sacraments. He died on November 3, at the age of 46. He was beatified on May 12, 1602 by Pope Paul V. He was subsequently canonized by Pope Paul V on November 1, 1610.
