This weekend is all about SAINTS. Both great and small, remembered and forgotten, named and un-named, the saints in our lives are very important for the growth and depth of our faith.
Many people will share the joy of saints in a backwards manner through the celebration of Halloween. We all understand the root of the word comes from the Solemnity of All Saints Day on November 1st as we celebrate the great communion of saints in heaven. On November 2nd we celebrate All Souls Day where we remember our beloved dead and all those who have died.
The Second Vatican Council reminds us the primary vocation of every Christian is to live a life of holiness. “The dignity of man rests above all on the fact that he (or she) is called to communion with God.” (GS #19) If we are in communion with God then in truth we are living a holy life…or in other words a saintly life.
We are all called to be saints. Saints are not perfect but rather they desire a deep and abiding communion with God in their imperfection. We are all made for communion with God. The dignity of our Christian vocation invites us to share our lives with each other in mutual love and mercy as we seek to follow in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus.
Which brings me to the invitation. The Diocese of San Jose is hosting a family event Diamonds in the Rough: Raising Saints in a Secular Society at St. Martin Parish in Sunnyvale featuring Mark Hart. For more information please go to the Diocese website at www.dsj.org/beasaint. All are invited to be a saint.
God Bless, Fr. Mark
