Call to Address Racism in our Hearts and Community

Archbishop Paul Etienne – May 29, 2020

The Catholic bishops of the United States recently issued a pastoral letter against racism entitled Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love. In this instruction, we call for a conversion of hearts, minds and institutions to address the evils of racism that still exist in our country and communities. As we wrote in the letter: Racism occurs because a person ignores the fundamental truth that, because all humans share a common origin, they are all brothers and sisters, all equally made in the image of God. When this truth is ignored, the consequence is prejudice and fear of the other, and—all too often—hatred.

The killing of George Floyd in Minnesota on Monday, May 25, was very traumatic and appalling. I wish to acknowledge the anger, pain and sadness this and other encounters between police officers and black men evoke not only in Minnesota, but throughout the country and in our own faith family as well.

These deaths are tragic, and they expose a symptomatic and deep-seated connection between institutional racism and the continued erosion of the sanctity of life. If we do not respond appropriately as a society, we will be tacitly acquiescing to the ongoing killing of unarmed black men.

The senseless taking of life defies the fundamental principles of justice, every notion of dignity and the fact that all of our lives are connected. As human beings, we are responsible for each other. As Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best said in her May 27 statement to the SPD, “policing is an honorable profession filled with honorable public servants, committed to protecting life and serving the community.” Chief Best also told her officers that if they see a coworker doing something that is unsafe, out of policy, unacceptable and illegal, they need to act, and that if someone’s

life is unnecessarily in danger, it is their responsibility to intervene.

As Catholics, we are called to the same standards of behavior. We cannot stand by and not respond to incidents of racism and inhuman treatment of our black brothers and sisters, or anyone else. Whether citizens or officers of the law, we are all part of a community that is responsible to care for each other. Our time-honored Catholic social teaching about the common good demands no less of any of us.

The fact that we were created in the image of God teaches us that each person is a living expression of God who must be respected and preserved and never dishonored. Let us continue to pray and work together for the personal and societal conversions necessary to address the evils of racism.

A Word from Pope Francis With our eyes fixed on Jesus and his merciful gaze,

we experience the love of the Most Holy Trinity...

His person is nothing but love, a love given gratuitously...

The signs he works, especially in favor of sinners,

the poor, the marginalized, the sick, and the suffering,

are all meant to teach mercy.

Pope Francis, - Misericordiae Vultus, April 11, 2015

Ponder and Pray God suffers when we suffer and wishes

to console and protect us. In the Trinity we experience perfect undivided Unity…

how do I experience unity with the people around me? Do I remember to direct my prayers to the cause of

perfect unity within our Church and world?

The Resumption of Public Masses: "Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of

God. Do not disdain the entreaties of those who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed

Virgin. Amen" (an excerpt from Pope Francis' prayer during the Pandemic)

Outdoor Eucharist Celebration

We have received permission from the Archdiocese to resume Masses at All Saints in an outdoor setting. We look forward to safely resuming public celebration of the Eucharist according to the strict protocols outlined by our Archdiocese. We are committed to the health and safety of our parishioners and the greater community.

Our outdoor seating capacity in the schoolyard is about one third of our regular attendance on a "normal" week-end, so there will be some limitation on attendance. We will establish both digital and telephone methods for tak-ing reservations for the Masses, which we have planned for Sundays at 8:30am, 10am and 11:30am. Call the Par-ish Office weekdays from 11AM till 4PM to request a reservation for you and your family. Visit our website for a link to the online reservation system. Eventually we will also schedule Saturday and Sunday evening outdoor Masses.

Dispensation to attend Sunday Mass is still in effect.

This dispensation will cover people unable to attend be-cause of limitations of available seating capacity, illness, and general risk or vulnerability. Live-streamed Mass from the Archdiocese remains daily at 8:30am. Masses are also available on television.

Under the new protocols

Anyone experiencing a fever or other symptoms of illness must remain at home and not attend Mass. Please self-assess prior to coming if you have re-served to attend.

Those who attend may face mandatory quarantine if a fellow attendee subsequently tests positive for COVID-19.

All parishioners must wear masks, with exceptions for very young children.

Parishioners may receive Communion only in the hand.

Practice strict social distancing of at least 6 feet from members of another household. The Parish will pro-vide sanitized seats placed at a prescribed distance from others.

Mass will be of shorter duration and without public singing.

These measures are temporary and changeable, so we will stay in touch. Our trust in the Lord remains. We look for-ward to us all attending Mass together in the near future. Although we remain separated by space and other limita-tions, you remain a part of our Parish community!

At Home With Faith: Family activities and practices during t

he Covid-19 crisis

Love, Family, and Sacred Mystery In The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis tells us to “remove our sandals before the sacred ground of the other.” (#169) We need to see the people around us as signs of God’s presence in our midst. On Trinity Sunday, we reflect on God’s nature as Father, Son and Holy Spirit - a truth that can be known, but never fully mastered. No matter how much we know about God, there is always more to learn. Believe it or not, it’s similar with our families. In quarantine, we may be getting more familiar with our family members' positive and negative attributes. Still, they are made in God’s image and likeness - beautiful mysteries that can help lead us to God. Reflecting on the mystery of the Trinity not only helps us to know God better, it prepares us to love one another by helping us see sacredness in those most familiar to us.
