From the 25th to the 27th of May 2012 Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, is visiting Coventry. As part of that visit the New Communities of Coventry are organising a multicultural welcome on the 26th May.

This event, Coventry Welcomes Canterbury, will celebrate Coventry as a city of sanctuary and reconciliation. Coventry Cathedral is a powerful symbol of reconciliation, having been destroyed in World War II and then rebuilt as a spectacular building that as well as being a centre for Christianity is also a site that reminds us that people from all faiths and backgrounds have a positive role to play in building strong communities.

Coventry Welcomes Canterbury will be a vibrant evening to refl ect the contribution that New Communities have made to the life of the City. There will be performances, stalls, art displays and food tastings followed by a formal welcome from Sabir Zazai of Coventry Refugee & Migrant Centre on behalf of the New Communities of Coventry. The Archbishop will make a response and then meet key members of the communities.

The evening concludes with a buffet that will refl ect the diversity of food from the different communities. This is a unique opportunity to witness and take part in a cross community, multi-faith celebration and all are welcome in the spirit of reconciliation and sanctuary that is so strong in Coventry.
