Hope for Haiti

Christmas Hampers

During Advent, pupils & staff collected food to make into Christmas hampers for our local par-ishes and SVP groups. The food hampers formed a part of our end of term assembly, and they were a visual reminder of the true meaning of Christmas - the gift of Jesus, and ‘peace on earth and goodwill to all’. More than 30 hampers were made in total, and the effort and generosity of all of our families was there

for all to see. Thank you!

FEBRUARY 2010

As rescuers searched for survivors among the rubble, following the tragic earthquake in Haiti, pupils and staff of All Saints’ wore the colours of the Haitian flag (red & blue) - a sign of solidarity and fellowship, but also to raise much needed funds for the Emergency Appeal.

We were joined by our partner primary schools in the Valley, and by other Diocesan schools, and although we don’t know exactly how much has been raised in total, the final figure will be several thousands of pounds.

Thank you to everyone who contributed, and please continue to keep the people of Haiti in your thoughts and prayers. If you want to contribute further to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal, please send your money into school, or go directly to:

Lament for the People of Haiti

That day, the streets of Haiti were full

and a whirling wind stabbed the air.

In the house, the laughter froze.

A road opened its monstrous mouth

and homes, full of people, were swallowed.

They cry without tears -

their hearts cry -

for the lost souls of Haiti.

Gentle Jesus, neglect them not

Nor leave them burned alive.

They were drumbeats of a heart.

They were mouthfuls of laughter.

They were dancing stars.

And now their limbs lie, entombed in the

rubble

and a shroud of dust smothers their eyes.

I too cry without tears -

My heart cries -

For the lost souls of Haiti.

‘Readathon’

All Year 7 pupils participated in ‘Readathon’ last term. They have all set personal reading targets and have collected sponsors to raise money for ‘The Roald Dahl Foundation’ and ‘CLIC Sargent.’ Some English les-

sons were focused around reading and the ‘Caught’

poster campaign was designed to encourage reading for pleasure (in pupils and staff!) Our running total is £175.50, which is fantastic! How-ever, a large number of Year 7 pupils have yet to com-plete their reading and bring their sponsorship money into school. So, we’re hoping to raise a huge amount for two worthy charities. Our current Year 9 raised £371 during their Year 7 ‘Readathon’ so it would be great if we could match or exceed that amount!

‘The Big Freeze’

It was a very difficult start of term, with the heavy snow and freezing temperatures causing us to close

school on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th January. Thank you, once again, though, for everyone’s patience, perseverance and understanding.

Thank you especially to our site supervisor, Mr Brian Trickett and our Grounds Contractor, Mr Steve Ashworth and his staff, who worked extremely hard to make our school site safe and accessible, and ready for

reopening on Thursday 7th January - the only High School in Rossendale to open!

Well done to those pupils who made it into school, despite the bad weather, and thank you to those parents who let us know that they were having difficulty making the journey. Even though some pupils could not make it into school, it was important to try to open school for those who could! I’m sure that they all appreciated it!

Please continue to check the school’s website, or

listen to Radio Lancashire (or visit their website) (or if heavy snow does come our way again.

Sport at All Saints’ Our pupils came a respectable second in the Boccia tournament hosted at All Saints. Ashley Aspinall, Guofu Lin, Stephanie Bannister and Shannon Clarke all per-formed extremely well on the afternoon.

55 All Saints pupils, of all ages, took part in the Cross Country competition. All pupils ran extremely well, especially Charlie Holt and Connor Makin, coming 2nd and 3rd respectively in the year 9 race.

Beth Harrison (Yr 10) and Lauren Brown (Yr 11) took part in the Yr 11 girls Badminton competition in early December at BRGS. Both girls performed very well and can be pleased with their improvement.

All Saints Table Tennis club has been running every Wednesday, 3.30 until 5.00 and is going ex-tremely well. Boys and girls of all year groups have been attending. The club has seen several coaches coming to sessions and it is hoped that these sessions will soon be held on an evening, and become a part of a local table tennis league. Thanks goes out to Graham for running and coaching the club every week. All Saints Table Tennis team are unbeaten in two tour-naments so far with team A and team B coming first and second in both.

14 All Saints pupils also visited Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday 7th October for the’ Premier League for Sport’ launch. Pupils enjoyed a great day with some professional sports people.

James Bramhall and Simon Bond ran Rugby Union sessions with Yr 7 boys in preparation for a Year 7 Interschool tournament 10th December. All Saints’ Yr 7 boys took two teams of 11 to play Rugby Union in a tournament at Fearns. We are all looking forward to the Year 8 competition this term.

In Football, All Saints’ Yr 7 boys have played against Fearns and Alder Grange. Year 8 boys have won 2 games so far this year, with an excellent 5-2 win against Fearns under the flood lights. Thanks to Mr Brenchley for managing them.

The successful Yr 9 All Saints’ team also played in a 6-aside competition at Fearns, taking 2 teams. Both teams came first and second in an excellent display of good football. The Yr 10 boys football team has been performing very well, winning all three games played. Thanks to Mr Koziaryn for management and extra train-ing every Thursday after school.

On Tuesday 8th December, All Saints’ KS3 girls 7 a-side team took on Whitworth at Fearns. In a tough game, under the flood lights, and in the driving rain, they were narrowly beaten 3-1

Music at All Saints’

Orchestra will begin from 1st February, for any pupils

who play an orchestral or brass band instrument, to

any standard. We will work through a variety of

different music and there will be the opportunity to

perform concerts both in school and outside.

There will also be a singing teacher starting after half

term and she will also be helping run a Choir in school

with Mrs Evans, one lunch time

a week. If there are any pupils

who are interesting in starting

singing lessons then come and

see Mrs Evans in the music

room for more information.

Science Day

On Tuesday 25th January, 41 Yr 8 pupils went on a

Science trip. A Scientist from Salford University dem-

onstrated exciting Chemistry experiments, including

the shooting of a bottle to the very back of the Thea-

tre. Many of the experiments could not have been car-

ried out in our own Science labs, due to their scale

and ambition, but many of our pupils were very much

inspired by what they saw, and are now planning to

study triple science at GCSE!

Staff / Pupils Netball

The All Saints staff / pupils Netball team have won 6 games, and lost only 1…they are hoping to come 1st or 2nd in their division. If any pupils or parents / ex pupils are interested in joining – then contact Ms Grimshaw, through school. They play Tuesday or Wednesday.

Thank you to Mario’s, in Bacup, for their generous sponsorship!

Primary School Sport

St James the Less, St Mary’s Haslingden and St Veron-ica’s all took part in both the Yr 3/4 and Yr 5/6 tag rugby competitions, having had some taster sessions in schools. All schools played well and showed some real talent.

On the 12th November, St Marys RC Primary, Hasling-den and St James the Less both competed in the Yr 3/4 bench ball tournament. St James the Less came runners up ,with a fantastic team performance. Well done!

St Veronica’s Yr 3/4's also really enjoyed taking part in the Handball competition at Haslingden sports centre.

Tickets for the Carling Cup Final!

The Friends of All Saints have been fortunate enough to obtain 2 tickets for the Carling Cup Final at Wembley, on Sunday 28th February. This is a fantastic

opportunity to attend a major sporting occasion, in well placed seats, and we are selling raffle tickets at £2 per ticket. All money raised will go towards the Sports Hall

Development Fund. Raffle tickets are available from Ms Grimshaw or from the general office. If you are able to sell any additional tickets, please contact the school. All unsold tickets and ticket stubs / money must

be returned to school. The draw will be made on Monday 8th February

We have had the pleasure of welcoming three new members of staff to All Saints’ this term - Mrs Jenny Evans

Prison, Me? No Way!

The ‘No Way Trust’, a national educational charity, visited All Saints' with the aim of raising the awareness amongst the pupils about the causes, consequences and penalties of crime, and the effects of antisocial behaviour. Yr 9 pupils were involved in many different workshops throughout the day highlighting the consequences their actions can have, not only for themselves, but for their families and other members of the community.

Visit from China

On Tuesday 26th January we welcomed Mr. Pan You-shan, the Headteacher of No. 3 Middle School, Datong, China. He visited us with Mrs Wei Liwen, Deputy Direc-

tor of Datong Education, and the Vice Mayor of Datong, Mrs Li Shijie. After exchanging gifts, Mr Beesley & Mr Pan reaffirmed their desire to ‘continue our friend-ship’. They both agreed that the link between our two schools is very important to us all, and that there is a commitment to strengthening our friendship.
