A MESSAGE FROM Our Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This Ash Wednesday, we mark the beginning of our

Lenten celebration. This is the time of the year when our

Scripture stories about Jesus will help us in our faith

journey through reflecting on the Life, Death, and Resur-

rection of Jesus through the holy observance of prayer,

fasting, and almsgiving.

Here at All Souls, we adapted the theme “Come Follow

Me” for the year 2021. Through the intercession of St.

Joseph – faithful Guardian, humble Defender, and Pro-

tector of the Holy Family – our parish and school communities are

working together to share its resources to enhance our weekend

experiences. We also hope to create missionary opportunities in our

ministerial work through spiritual development and education as it

is best expressed in the life of Christian stewardship.

We hear in today’s Gospel a leper asking Jesus, “Master, if you wish

you can make me clean!” There is an aspect in this illness that St.

Mark, our evangelist, points out that does not only affect the health

condition of a person, but many of these healing stories illustrate

isolation and reintegration. Because of these illnesses, people are

hindered from their normal associations with others, not to mention

the economic impact due to the loss of work. The effects of our cur-

rent pandemic brought about by social distancing, for practical and

necessary reasons, have alienated people from this present way of

life. Many family members and friends reported by patients and

have been timid about touching or getting close to one another.

Lent also teaches us about the lessons of being connected with God

amidst social distances and precautions. As Jesus withdraws from

the crowd, whether through retreat or reflection, he remains to be

source of blessing that God wishes for human beings, especially as

we are reminded of his compassion and healing.

Our Catholic Appeal provides an annual opportunity to express our

compassion to people who likewise been isolated and experienced

the hardships of reintegration into our society. Your financial help

to our annual diocesan campaign not only assists our brothers and

sisters, our neighbors, but also our parish assessment and financial

health conditions. No contribution is ever too small.

Fr. David Vivero

nuestra sociedad.

Gospel Meditation

For Your Day

he Church, as a voice of the Gospel,

proclaims the sacredness of all human life.

Everyone created by God is fashioned in

God’s image and has Divine DNA at the

center of their soul. God never leaves what

God creates but always remains intimately

bound to what he has given form. Everyone

has a place and because they have received

the gift of Divine Blessing, nobody deserves

to feel inferior, unworthy, unwanted,

unclean or marginalized. Even the most

broken of souls has a place. We, the Body of

Christ, have the privilege and responsibility

to give voice to the voiceless. The cries of the

little one in his or her mother’s womb are just

as sacred as the cries of one who is homeless

and hungry. The migrant deserves our

attention as much as the forgotten elderly

and even the prisoner, with a heart hardened

by anger and resentment, deserves respect

and dignity.

The Gospel of Life is often hard to swallow,

and we would rather keep those we consider

unclean, different or unfixable in a place by

themselves. It is hard to see them with us,

but they deserve to be. There is far too much

violence in this world and the result of that

violence is the assault on human life. Many

are forced to leave the place they call home

in search of safer ground, finding few if any

along the way who will help them. How

different today’s Gospel story would be if

Jesus gave in to what was politically correct

at that time. The leper would

have been turned away and a

soul, already beaten down by

disease and fear, would have

experienced an even deeper

wound. Jesus wouldn’t have

captured much attention from

anyone, nor would he have

mirrored the Father’s

compassion and love.

Where do we stand with all of

this? Do we at least understand

that God’s vision is often in

“T

conflict with the vision put forth in our world

and even the one we advance ourselves?

There is no doubt that it is incredibly

challenging to find a place for everyone at the

table. This challenge is compounded when

the systems of operation and structure that

are so ingrained in us affirm power and

privilege rather than inclusivity and justice.

Everything really goes askew when the

powerful begin to control who is entitled to

wholeness and inclusion, and greed becomes

a driving force. Prejudice and entitlement

raise their ugly heads and we find ourselves

with quite a mess. It’s time to admit that

things have been a mess for a very long time.

The mess needs to be healed, not by erasing it

but by allowing God to touch it and make it

whole. We need to bring God back to the

center of life where God belongs. There are no

easy solutions to the world’s dilemmas. But,

knowing that wholeness, healing, and dignity

are worthy pursuits, we can more confidently

labor to achieve God’s vision. ©LPi

This past weekend, The Council of

Catholic Women did an amazing job of

bringing attention to the "Hugs for The

Homeless" program. These ladies were

outside the church, before and after every

Mass, to collect donations. The generosity

of All Souls parishioners was wonderful

and the ladies are deeply grateful for the

donations and support they received! As

a result, the important work of Pathways

to Care will be able to contiue their efforts

to help the homeless.

Reflexion Para Cuaresma “Fijos Los Ojos en Jesús” (Hebreos 12:1-2)

Cómo está el pueblo santo de Dios? BENDECIDO!!!

-Deacon Wenny

Our faith journey is full of wonders and lessons, each one serving as a way for us to recommit our lives to God. This renewed com-mitment includes understanding our feasts and celebrations; it means knowing a little about the precious history and rich tradi-tions of the Catholic Church and preparing to observe these time-honored rituals of Advent, Lent, the Holy Triduum, Easter, and Divine Mercy Sunday. These traditions are particularly important as Ash Wednesday approaches, and we face the task of preparing for our Lenten jour-ney. Lent is a time of spiritual renewal and purification, a season that allows us to draw closer to Christ and ready ourselves to rec-ognize his sacrifice on the cross and his conquering of death. Lent begins on Wednesday, February 17, a day when we will re-ceive ashes on our heads to start a time of self-reflection and prepa-ration. This journey lasts 40 days, excluding Sundays – which are considered to be a mini celebration of the glorious Easter Sunday to come. This year, amid a tumultuous worldwide crisis brought forth by COVID-19, we face the challenge of finding ways to purify our-selves to welcome the resurrection. There are many ways to pre-pare for Lent. Prayer and meditation, fasting and sacrifice, generos-ity with our fellow man, are all paths that we can follow to draw closer to God. Over the next weeks, some of these avenues will be further explored.

We invite you to follow this series and set your course toward the Light of Christ, as we embark on our individual and collective Lenten journey as children of God.

Saint Gilbert of Sempringham

ilbert was born in Sempringham, England, into a wealthy

family, but he followed a path quite different from that ex-

pected of him as the son of a Norman knight. Sent to France

for his higher education, he decided to pursue seminary studies.

He returned to England not yet ordained a priest, and inherited sever-

al estates from his father. But Gilbert avoided the easy life he could

have led under the circumstances. Instead he lived a simple life at a

parish, sharing as much as possible with the poor. Following his ordi-

nation to the priesthood he served as parish priest at Sempringham.

Among the congregation were seven young women who had ex-

pressed to him their desire to live in religious life. In response, Gilbert

had a house built for them adjacent to the Church. There they lived an

austere life, but one which attracted ever more numbers; eventually

lay sisters and lay brothers were added to work the land. The religious

order formed eventually became known as the Gilbertines, though

Gilbert had hoped the Cistercians or some other existing order would

take on the responsibility of establishing a rule of life for the new or-

der. The Gilbertines, the only religious order of English origin found-

ed during the Middle Ages, continued to thrive. But the order came to

an end when King Henry VIII suppressed all Catholic monasteries.

Over the years a special custom grew up in the houses of the order

called “the plate of the Lord Jesus.” The best portions of the dinner

were put on a special plate and shared with the poor, reflecting Gil-

bert’s lifelong concern for less fortunate people.

Throughout his life, Gilbert lived simply, consumed little food, and

spent a good portion of many nights in prayer. Despite the rigors of

such a life he died at well over age 100.

Our Catholic Appeal 2021

Our diocesan family will celebrate Our Cath-

olic Appeal Weekend on February 13th &

14th. Over the past few weeks, we have

prayed about, thought about and talked

about the ministries supported by Our Cath-

olic Appeal. Now it is time for all of us to

share a portion of our treasure, so these min-

istries can continue.

If you received your 2021 Our Catholic Ap-

peal packet in the mail and made your

pledge, thank you. If you have not yet made

your pledge, please consider doing so today.

For your convenience, all contributions can

be paid in a variety of ways, such as online at

https://www. orlandodiocese.org/our-

catholic-appeal/, through the mail with enve-

lopes provided in the mailing to you and

available at Church, and through flexible

installments which can be arranged.

In addition to supporting every parish and

school with administrative support, Diocesan

ministries support the families in our Mission

of San Juan de la Maguana, adults with disa-

bilities at Bishop Grady Villas, veterans and

homeless at Pathways to Care, retreatants and

summer campers at San Pedro Center, tourists

at the Basilica of the National Shrine, Mary

Queen of the Universe, those who mourn at

Queen of Angels Catholic cemetery, and our

neighbors in need of rental assistance, food

and healthcare through Catholic Charities.

Our Catholic Appeal also sustains our Church

in Central Florida through vocations office

support, seminarian formation, priest devel-

opment and care and faith formation for

adults and children and more.

By supporting the ministries of our diocese,

every parish, including our own, is better

equipped to carry out the work of Christ.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration

and generous response.

Youth Ministry “Cause Your voice is like water

running through me

Eyes like fire all-consuming

You're everything I'm not

You're changing me”

“I'm open come and fill me

Your presence is all I'm seeking

You're everything I'm not

You're changing me”

These are some of the lyrics to Changing

Me by Christian artist Anna Golden.

In a culture where there is so much noise

young people often need to be reminded to

stop and really listen. In a prayer activity at

one of our Sr. DAWG nights, youth were

asked to stop talking and asking and really

listen to the words of the song “Changing

Me”.

The song was played one time, then the

teens moved to spaces set up with paper

and paint. Once set up the song was played

again. We urged the teens to let God move

through them and speak to them allowing

the Spirit to let them Prayer Paint.

After letting the music play through one

more time, while they reflectively listened

and painted, the teens had the opportunity

to walk around the room and see their

peers and their prayer paintings and a

chance to share about their personal experi-

ence.

This is a favorite activity of many of the

youth group and we usually try to do the

activity once a semester.
