The Year of Saint Luke24.07.16.

17th Sunday of the Year (Sunday Readings: of year C ::: Weekdays of year 11 ::: Breviary: Week i)

Scripture: Genesis 18 : 20 – 32Psalm 137

I thank you, Lord, with all my heart , you have heard the words of my mouth. Before the angels I will bless you.I will adore before your holy temple.

I thank you for your faithfulness and lovewhich excel all we ever knew of you.On the day I called, you answered;you increased the strength of my soul.

The Lord is high yet he looks on the lowlyand the haughty he knows from afar.Though I walk in the midst of afflictionyou give me life and frustrate my foes.

You stretch out your hand and save me,your hand will do all things for me.Your love, O Lord, is eternal ,discard not the work of your hands

Colossians 2 : 12 – 24Luke 11 : 1 - 13

Intercession : Oh Lord hear our prayerResponse : And let our cry come to you.

A woman was caught stealing a can of peaches. Her husband accompanied her to the trial. ‘How many peaches were in the can?’ asks the judge. ‘Six,’ she confesses. ‘Then I must sentence you to six years in prison, one for every peach you stole,’ says the judge. Her husband stands up and says, ‘Judge. She also stole a bag of peas.’

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Bill sat in the local pub, bragging about his athletic prowess. None of the regulars challenged him, but a visitor piped up, ‘I’ll bet you 50 quid that I can push something in a wheelbarrow for one block and you can’t wheel it back,’ Bill looked over the skinny stranger and decided it wasn’t much of a challenge. ‘I’ll take you on,’ he said. The two men and a number of regulars borrowed a wheelbarrow and took it to the corner. ‘Now let’s see what you’re made of,’ taunted Bill, ‘OK,’ said the challenger. ‘Get in.’

A young enthusiastic priest was taking up a new post. He had a particular passion for animal rights. So you can imagine his utter disgust when one day he witnessed one of his parishioners walking down the street in the longest fur coat you’ve ever seen. Storming over to her, he said, ‘And what poor creature had to die so you could wear that fur coat?’ The lady parishioner was stunned but managed to stammer, ‘M-m-m-my mother-in-law.’

PARISH OFFICE

Become a Holy Door Helper! The Diocesan Evangelisation Team invites you to help run a “Mission to the Doors of Mercy” in September this year. Each day between 19 and 23 September we will visit a different Holy Door Church and put on a series of meals. With your help, we will invite non-Catholics and non-churchgoing Catholics to come and share a simple meal, hear something of Pope Francis’ message of mercy, and, for those who wish, take part in a short prayer service which ends with an opportunity to pass through the Holy Door.

We are asking for help when we visit your local Holy Door: Newport, St Mary’s Stow Hill – Wednesday 21st September.

We need helpers available during the afternoon and/or during the evening who can: welcome guests at the door and as table hosts; prepare or serve tea, coffee and soup; provide music and readers for the simple prayer service. We also need your help before the Mission Day , please contact the parish office: 01633 265533 or contact Madeleine Walters on [email protected] or Revd Gareth Leyshon on 029 2073 1061.

After this event, we intend to organise a trip to visit all the Diocesan Holy Doors, as part of the “Pilgrimage of Prayer”.
