Over 500 people downloaded our first edition of the season, and we hope we can build on this excellent start – spreading the word of the All Golds and rugby league far and wide.

We were also delighted that so many people used our Match Centre facility at www.allgoldsrugby.com, with Patrick Baines’ superb summary keeping you up to date with all the action v South Wales Scorpions as it happened. Another couple of hundred watched the live stream on All Golds TV (check it out on YouTube) so we feel we’re starting to make a decent presence through digital media. Of course we’d love it if you made it down to the Prince of Wales Stadium to see us in person, but to see so many people engaged with our project is really encouraging.

In this edition of All Gold you’ll find reports and reviews on our recent games at home to South Wales Scorpions and away

to Toulouse Olympique. Two very different settings and experiences, but all helping us to build towards a successful season on and off the pitch. You’ll also be able to enjoy previews of today’s crucial clash with Coventry Bears, look back in history with George Cowburn, and check out the latest from the wider world of rugby, courtesy of our very own President, Mr Lionel Hurst.

We are delighted to announce that as a curtain raiser to the

match with Coventry Bears, our reserve All Golds team will be facing an armed forces representative side in the form of the Royal Logistic Corps. We hope our visitors enjoy a great game and we’re sure that between them the teams will put on some excellent entertainment.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this issue of the All Gold, particularly George Cowbury, Lewis Mitchell, Patrick Baines, Chris Wilson, Lionel

Hurst and of course Craig Paul Design. We hope you enjoy it!

Obviously we hope that the All Golds do their bit to raise the profile, but we are also pleased to give our backing to the other teams who are likely to be ‘in the mix’ this season. In football we have two great Gloucestershire teams battling it out for glory in the National League, and we hope that tonight supporters from both Cheltenham Town and Forest Green Rovers take the opportunity to sample some rugby league action at the Prince of Wales Stadium. Earlier in the day, both teams were at home in crucial matches, with Cheltenham squaring up to Boreham Wood and Forest Green facing Aldershot. The situation at the top of the National League seems to get more pressurised as every week passes, and although we can take comfort from the fact that the title seems destined for one of these two local clubs, we are set for a tense and desperate finish to the season.

The University has long standing link with both clubs. Cheltenham’s previous promotion to the Football League coincided with a period when Steve Cotterill’s team trained full time at our Hardwick

and Folley campuses. It’s nice to see so many of that team still involved in professional football, including those still playing like Mike Duff and those who have subsequently moved into coaching like Bob Bloomer, Mark Yates, Steve Book, Jamie Victory and Russell Milton. It’s a hallmark of great managers and coaches that they are able to mentor and guide others to follow in their footsteps. Perhaps some of today’s All Golds

will follow the lead of the

impressive Lee Greenwood? It will be interesting to see.

Over the years many Gloucestershire students have played in the black and white, and now green, of the Team on the Hill. The most significant of these was probably Alex Sykes, a Forest Green legend, who also inspired the University to sporting success. Some of the current All Golds backroom team have a particular soft spot for Rovers (step forward Trevor Moss), so the conclusion to the National League season will be watched closely by many in our ranks.

Here at the All Golds we are at the early stages of a journey which will one day, we hope, take us to the heights that the Robins and Rovers have enjoyed in recent years. We have a great deal to learn from both clubs and hope that they will be prepared to share some ideas as we progress. We wish both clubs well for the rest of the season and hope that as the sun starts to shine more we can tempt more of their fans to try out a new sporting experience, the extraordinary experience that is rugby league…

Easter and christmas are the times of year that families get together and consume vast quantities of food and drink. There is also the tradition of sporting events over those holidays and rugby league has its share.

The recent comments about the All Golds playing on Wednesday evening then flying to France the following Friday to play Toulouse

on the Saturday and the effect this might have on the

players took my mind back to

an earlier article about Forest of Dean-

born Jack Read who played for Oldham in

the 1920s and 30s (All

Golds v

Oldham programme 25 May 2014).

Jack (and other Oldham players) played four matches in five days over the Easter period in 1927 and it was not uncommon to play three or four games over the Christmas and New Year period at that time.

There were no full-time professionals, protein supplements and so on then and players often worked a five and a half day week sometimes in strenuous physical jobs as well as playing 40 plus games a season often on heavy pitches. There were no substitutes either; unless badly injured, everybody played the full 80 minutes.

Anytime now the first coach will be complaining about having to play two matches over Easter. Why? The answer probably lies in the vastly different playing styles between the different eras.

When I first started watching the greatest game in the early 1960s, Oldham’s open side prop forward (Number 8) who anchored the then fiercely contested scrums as well as helping his hooker win the ball was Ken Wilson (a Gloucestershire County player with an England rugby union cap).

Ken weighed in at about fifteen and a half stones (don’t ask me what that is in kilos!) a weight no self respecting Super League centre would be below today.

Also, referees only took the defending side back five yards at the play the ball rather than the ten plus we see today. High speed impact collisions were therefore less common and there were not too many 19 stone

forwards charging full pelt at defenders.

The game is undoubtedly faster now and the action continuous to keep the players under constant pressure.

Unlike some “old timers” I do prefer today’s game although that heart-stopping last five minutes of a match when your team is defending a slender lead and the opposition have unlimited tackles to pound away at your try line took some beating!

In the recent past we have seen teams ship 80 points on Easter Monday having played an energy- and emotion-sapping derby on Good Friday.

Other than the 1962-63 season when matches were played into June owing to the terrible winter weather which caused the league to virtually shut down for two and a half months, the last time I can recall a team being asked to endure a challenging backlog

of fixtures was during 1990-91 when the great Wigan team of that decade played NINE times in 27 days in March and April during a season dubbed “Mission Impossible”.

They won a Challenge Cup semi final on the Saturday 23 March, then beat Warrington (Tuesday 26th), Featherstone (Friday 29th) and Oldham (Monday 1st April) away, then faced St Helens (Thursday 4th), Castleford (Sunday 7th), Widnes (Tuesday 9th) and Bradford (Thursday 11th), all at home, before travelling to Leeds on the Saturday 13 April to win the league. Eight of those matches were won with only a draw against Bradford - thanks to a late Kelvin Skerrett try that capped a comeback from 18-2 down - spoiling a perfect record.

Needless to say, after eight days’ rest, Wigan lost their next game in the Premiership at home to Featherstone Rovers 31-26.

And some say they have it tough these days!

With Featherstone Lions drawn to face Lock Lane there would be at least one amateur side in the hat for the fifth round and a possible tie against one of the Super League sides. Lock Lane, who won away at Oxford in the third round, had the better of the early exchanges and went in with a 14 points advantage. Any hope the Lions had of a second half recovery were put to bed as Lock Lane kept up their first half dominance triumphing 30-16 and setting up a fifth round tie against Championship side Halifax.

The best game of the fourth round was at Batley. The home side, who have got off to a fine start in 2016, were drawn to face Bradford Bulls in what looked like a close match on paper. That’s certainly how the game went as it was locked at 36-36 with just four minutes left. Step forward Dominic Brambani who slotted home a 25 metres drop goal to book Batley a place in the fifth round and a tie against Featherstone who pulled off a shock win in the capital against Championship leaders London Broncos.

Leigh Centurions made light work of Workington in an eleven try hammering at Leigh Sports Village. Cory Paterson crossed for four tries with Martyn Ridyard kicking ten goals in a 68-14 stroll. They’ll surely have a tougher test in the next round after they were drawn away to Toulouse in the next round. Toulouse have looked in imperious form thus far, scoring points for fun as well as keeping them out at the other end. Before our

game against the Frenchmen last weekend they had only conceded one try in 160 minutes of league action. We managed to cross the white wash five times courtesy of Steve Parry (3), Jonny Leather and Alex Davidson but ultimately their attacking prowess proved the catalyst in a 62-28 win.

Halifax avoided a potential banana skin with a 78-0 thrashing of Pilkington Recs. A much closer game came at Sheffield where Swinton were denied a famous victory. The Lions went in at half time 18-10 ahead but the home side got the better of a close contest coming out with a 32-28 win.

Sunday saw the remaining three games of the fourth round with the three home teams securing safe passages to the next round. Two of the best teams in League 1, York and Keighley, squared off at Bootham Crescent, with the Knights just getting the better of the Cougars. York went in at the break in total command leading 20-0 but the visitors battled back to 20-12 but couldn’t finish the job. York were rewarded with another home tie in the next round against Dewsbury.

Siddal, so impressive in the previous round against Newcastle, saw their cup adventure come to an end at the hands of Rochdale. Siddal, coached by Lee Greenwood’s brother Gareth, came into the game in confident mood but the Hornets proved a step too far winning 48-20. Rochdale were rewarded for their efforts with the prize of a fifth round tie against

the surprise of the Super League season - Widnes Vikings.

The last amateur side in action were Kells who faced Oldham. The Roughyeds have had a tough start to life in the Championship but gained a confidence boosting 40-6 win against Kells. Jamel Chisholm and Jack Holmes grabbed a brace of tries to set up a fifth round tie against last year’s Challenge Cup runners up Hull KR.

The 2016 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup fifth round draw is a follows:

Wakefield Trinity Wildcatsvs. Sheffield Eagles

Hull Kingston Rovers vs. Oldham

Toulouse Olympique XIIIvs. Leigh Centurions

Rochdale Hornets vs. Widnes Vikings

Hunslet Hawks vs. Salford Red Devils

Halifax vs. Lock Lane

Batley Bulldogsvs. Featherstone Rovers

Dewsbury Ramsvs. York City Knights

*Ties to be played over the weekend of April 16 – 17.

One fifth round game to be televised by Sky Sports on Saturday 16 April (kick off 5.00pm)

With so many players having played for the opposition at one time or other, this match-up should have the intensity of a fierce local derby but though there were a few incidents to lift the mood, there were too many errors from both sides for the game to be a classic.

The All Golds were the better of the two sides showing that they have a much sharper attacking edge this season as they posted nine tries and, had the goal-kicking been more sure-footed, the half century would have been reached.

The Scorpions showed some nice touches and when they were able to dictate the pace of the game from the play the ball, showed they could score. However, it was mistakes at the back that cost them, particularly from restarts. On three occasions, they failed to capitalise on scores as they coughed up cheap possession and allowed the All Golds to score some soft tries.

Steve Parry and Harrison Elliott crossed for tries against their old teammates in the opening quarter, Christiaan Roets responding in his first game since returning to the Scorpions from North Wales Crusaders.

Alex Davidson and Jonny Leather gave the All Golds an 18-6 interval lead which Chris Barlow extended

with a neat finish after the break for the first of his two tries on debut.

The sides spent the second half exchanging tries with Connor Farrer, Greg Wilde and Osian Phillips touching down for the visitors and Brendon Newton (twice), Davidson and Barlow replying for the All Golds.

Defence is still the major area of concern for Lee Greenwood with Farrer profiting from an individual howler right on the try-line and missed tackles allowing Phillips to rumble through from 30 or so metres out.

Swinton loanee Wilde showed his class with his try but there were opportunities to halt his run that

were missed; similarly with Roets’ first half score.

Greenwood was none too impressed: “… certainly defensively, we need to improve quickly as we are conceding too many points”, he said and will be looking for improvement against the second best team in France in the Cup in the next fixture.

TEAM: Jonny Leather (t), Chris Barlow (2t), Josh Allison, Brad Kislingbury, Phil Cowburn; Jayson Lombardo (4g), Brendon Newton (2t); Ollie Purslow, Steve Parry (Capt.) (t), Morgan Evans; Lamont Bryan, Joe McClean; Harrison Elliott (t);

The two sides have met already this season in the first round of the iPro Sport Cup where the All Golds’ attacking prowess laid the foundations for a 48-24 triumph in Coventry. The Bears have had two tough fixtures to start their league campaign with heavy losses incurred against two of the favourites for promotion - Toulouse and Rochdale. The men from the Midlands had a weekend off after being knocked out of the Challenge Cup and will be hoping their fresh legs will give them the advantage against an All Golds side playing their third game in nine days. Coventry will be without Elliot Liku and Tommy Holland who have both completed a one month loan from North Wales Crusaders.

All Golds’ Head Coach Lee Greenwood will be hoping for a better defensive effort from his squad having conceded 62 points to Toulouse in the Challenge Cup. He’ll be hopeful that Brad Kislingbury (needed stitches in his eyebrow) and Chris Barlow (dead leg) will be

available for selection after the game in the South of France last Saturday. Richard Jones’ recovery from a knee injury has taken a step forward and he may feature in the curtain raiser for our reserve grade.

Speaking ahead of the game Greenwood said: “It’s going to be very tough for us on Friday. We will be playing our third game in nine days and have also done a bit of travelling in that time as well. We will certainly not use that as an excuse but it is definitely a factor. We were stood behind our posts a fair bit in Toulouse so we should be ok!”

“Our defence has not been good enough all season. We concede too many points which has either cost us games or kept the opposition in the game. This is definitely an area we all need to improve on.”

“Coventry have not beaten us yet since becoming professional and I’m sure they will see this as a good opportunity to change that record. Their short kicking

game caused us a few issues last time we played and they also finished strongly in that game.”

“We will have a final check on the squad on Thursday to see who is fit. We are carrying plenty of bumps, cuts and bruises from the previous 2 games but nothing too serious. We are hoping Richard Jones, James Walter, Graham O’Keeffe and Aaron Lyons will all return over the next few weeks which will be a boost.”

Before the game at 7:30pm the Prince of Wales will be hosting our performance pathway squad who face a tough test against the Royal Logistic Corps at 4:15pm. The Royal Logistic Corps RL was formed in 1996, with this season their 20th Anniversary the Club are looking to regain the Army Championship which they won in 2013 and 2014. The All Golds squad, coached by first team forward Alex Davidson, will be looking to add to their recent win over Cardiff City

Since then the Welsh international hooker has been a model of consistency for club and country culminating in a clean sweep of accolades at the 2015 All Golds’ end of season award ceremony as well as a European Championship win for Wales last autumn. After crossing for three tries on Saturday in the Challenge Cup defeat to Toulouse I caught up with him to get his thoughts on that game and the season ahead.

Patrick: Steve obviously Saturday was a tough day at the office. Just how good were Toulouse? Are they the best

team you’ve faced so far this season?

Steve: Yeah it was a very disappointing result for us any time

we give up a score we’re unhappy but to let them

score that many points was unacceptable. Toulouse are

a very good side definitely the best team we’ve played so far this season. It showed how much difference being a full time team in this league can make.

Patrick: Personally it was another great performance from yourself, scoring three tries. How happy are you with your own form this season? Any areas you are looking to improve upon?

Steve: It has taken me a few games to get back to full match form but I’m feeling like I’m getting back to my best now and look forward to carrying

this form forward through the season. I’m always looking for ways to improve on my game and one area I want to improve on is my kicking game so hopefully going forward I can improve on that and show it on the field.

Patrick: We seem to have no problem racking up the points - but defensively there are areas to improve upon. Is that a fair statement?

Steve: It’s definitely a fair statement, over the past few games we’ve let in more points than we think is acceptable as a team. Defensively we need to make big improvements fast and as a team we will work hard to put this right.

Patrick: Big game against Coventry coming up: looking at our last three games against them you must be confident we can get back to winning ways?

Steve: Our previous results against Coventry have been good for us but if we do not improve on defence quickly then Coventry will be looking to take their chances and get one back on us. It’s a tough league and no game’s a definite so we will be working hard in training this week to put things right and will look to get back to winning ways.

Patrick: We’ve a fair few lads who are new to the team. How impressed have you been with them?

Steve: I’ve been massively impressed with the new boys

that have come in. They’ve all added something to the team making us better as a group and have played a massive part in the victories we’ve had so far. I’m pretty sure as we continue to gel as a team and these guys settle in we will see these guys making an even bigger impact on the games we play.

Patrick: If I offered you a place inside the top eight or a win in the iPro Cup final, which would it be?

Steve: That’s a really tough choice because to win the cup would be amazing but if I had to make the choice I would have to go for the top eight. Every team wants to be in that top eight challenging for promotion and we are no different it’s what we’re aiming for and will be massive for us as a team if we can achieve it.

HALFWAY THROUGH THE 2014 SEASON HE SUFFERED A SERIOUS KNEE INJURY THAT RULED HIM OUT OF ACTION FOR SIX MONTHS.

A match report without images is like a Christmas dinner without the turkey.

A selection of photographs showing bone crunching tackles, players diving over the try line and their delirious celebrations at full time add a greater depth to a report. Lewis Mitchell has been the All Golds’

club photographer for the past three years whilst studying photo journalism at the University of Gloucestershire and has provided countless memorable shots that have been published in trade newspapers, our website and our social media accounts.

Lewis got involved with the All Golds during his first year at the University of Gloucestershire through the

Degree Plus scheme that helps students arrange work experience. “After being introduced to Lionel, who warmly welcomed me to the club, I have been continually working closely and developing a relationship with the All Golds staff and players ever since,” said Mitchell.

“Obviously the main part of my work is capturing images from the game but I also cover

important corporate events like the hugely successful business breakfasts. At the most recent one I got to meet Iestyn Harris which was amazing.”

Like sports therapy student Hollie Sims, who we featured last week, Lewis works all year round covering our first team in the Spring and Summer then the University BUCS side during the winter months. Preparation is key to Lewis who begins his match day work long before the game gets underway. “I like to start a match day by arriving at the ground more than an hour before kick off. I read through the programme that features my imagery and set-up my laptop by establishing an internet connection and create new folders for that match.”

“Then I grab my photographers bib and get the latest team news from the other staff members. As the players take to the field for their warm up I take this opportunity to get up close to the players with a wide lens for some unique, candid angles of the players that aren’t possible during the match. Once they return to the changing rooms for their final preparations I like to get some profile images of the ground as it fills with spectators.”“Now the players are emerging from the tunnel, I kneel low down to make them appear as big and tall as possible as they run towards me, and these are the shots usually featured on the cover of this programme. As the match kicks off I rush to my position behind the posts that we are attacking and switch to my telephoto lens so I am able to reach the oncoming action.”

“At half-time I flick through the first half action and also

take note of any shots that I improve during the second half. I typically take around just under a hundred RAW files during each half, and after the post match handshakes etc are documented I rush back to my laptop where I select around 5-10 images for the match report. These are then renamed and tagged with player details before being lightly edited in Photoshop. After being resized these images are uploaded to Dropbox where they can be downloaded by the various individuals and publications covering that match. My day is nearly complete as the remaining several hundred photos are resized and my watermark is applied to them ready for use by the players on their various social media platforms with the more interesting images being featured on my personal blog.”

When he’s not covering games Lewis enjoys nothing more than watching the two loves of his life - Leeds Utd and the Welsh international football team. “Aside from rugby league my main sporting interest is football, being an avid Leeds United supporter I tend to watch matches at Elland Road a few times each season and even more at some of the local away grounds. I also haven’t missed a Welsh home match in over three years and am very much looking forward

to cheering on Bale & Co in France come June!”

Working with the All Golds has given Lewis the perfect platform to showcase his talents. “I know that as my knowledge and skills have developed from studying this course so has my personal confidence in my vast portfolio. That shows I am capable of delivering quality work for a wide variety of clients.”

“After graduating I don’t want to stop taking photographs. Ideally I would like to continue being a sports photographer whether that be representing an agency or through freelance work as I love capturing the action and emotions that are shown at various

sports.”

With a 72-hour turnaround from the Scorpions game, this was always going to be a tough ask against a side many pundits are predicting to be champions at the end of the season.

Toulouse are a full-time operation and have a big, forceful pack coupled with clever halfbacks and a backline capable of slicing open the meanest of defences. Full back Mark Kheirallah has reached 100 points for the season and he contributed a hat-trick of tries and nine goals to his tally to help his team into the fifth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup.

Having thumped Hemel Stags 74-0 the previous week, Toulouse were soon in their stride and tries from Kheirallah, Jonathan Ford, Greg White and Bastien Canet, all improved by Kheirallah’s boot saw them ease to a 24-0 lead.

Alex Davidson pulled a score back before Mourad Kriouache and Tony Maurel sent the teams into the dressing rooms with the home side 32-6 to the good.

Given the All Golds’ limited preparation, it came as a pleasant surprise that the second half was a contest on the scoreboard. Toulouse held all the aces but the All Golds hung in there, landing scoring blows of their own.

Notably, Steve Parry crossed for three tries and Jonny Leather added a fourth but Kheirallah completed his hat-trick, Ford crossed for his second and Kuni Minga and Clement Boyer went over for the hosts to conclude the scoring.

There was never going to be a comeback as there was against the Crusaders in the last round but the All Golds kept going, kept asking questions with the ball and maintained the standards coach Lee Greenwood is looking to instill.

So, the Wembley dream is over for another year but the side still has a chance of silverware in

the iProSport Cup as they face Newcastle Thunder in the quarter finals here at the Prince of Wales on Sunday 3 April (3pm kick off).

Winger Adrian Chaima touched down four times in the ten-try rout of the Welsh side and full back Adam Cunliffe added seven goals to his two tries for a 22 point haul.

Trailing 30-0 at the break, the Tigers piled on the pressure early in the second period but the Outlaws’ defence was as strong as their attack and they could not be breached.

A sometimes fiery game was marred by three red cards during the second period with the score 34-0. The Tigers came off worse with two men earning an early shower.

The Outlaws made the most of their

man advantage to run in four more tries to get their title defence off to

the perfect start.

Round two

kicks off on Saturday 2 April with the All Golds’ CLS side travelling to Coventry to face the Bears’ second string. Alex Davidson’s men will follow up their 30-10 win over Cardiff City three weeks ago with a friendly against the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) at the Prince of Wales Stadium on Good Friday. Based at South Cerney, the RLC will be fielding a selection from their 40-man squad as they prepare for their bid to regain the Army championship, a title they held in 2013 and 2014.

The Bears’ preparation for their season opener against the All Golds has included a series of open training days as head coach Lloyd Horton looks to finalise his squad prior to the season. The Midlands side will be looking to at

least repeat last season’s fourth place finish and compete for the silverware.

The remaining two fixtures in the round see Torfaen look to bounce back from their mauling by the Outlaws as they entertain West Wales Raiders in what is sure to be a fiercely contested Welsh derby while newcomers London Chargers make their debut in the competition as they travel to last season’s defeated Grand Finalists Valley Cougars.

The Chargers warmed up for their competition debut with a friendly against the London Skolars and the partnerships between those two clubs and with the London Broncos will be the key to the development of the game in the capital.

THE OUTLAWS LOOK TO BE IN NO MOOD TO RELINQUISH THEIR CROWN IF THEIR OPENING DAY 54-0 TRIUMPH OVER TORFAEN TIGERS IS ANYTHING TO GO BY.

20 The coverage of the NRL with every match live each weekend is supreme.

Remarkable moments of magnificence are the order of the day with skills, athleticism and acts of bravery without compare on the world stage. Last week’s matches between Gold Coast Titans and Wests Tigers; Newcastle Knights and Canberra Raiders; Penrith Panthers and Brisbane Broncos being especially memorable.

Closer to home it is splendid to see Widnes riding high in the European top division.

The Chemics are coached by Cheltenham-based Denis Betts. We have been in touch recently and he is fully appraised of continuing developments of Rugby

League in Gloucestershire from primary to professional.

I was looking forward to meeting old friend and Leeds Rhinos boss Gary Hetherington for dinner at the sumptuous Greenway Hotel on Monday.

Unfortunately a strange turn of events put paid to it. I may be in a position to reveal more in due course!

We are all naturally very excited by the prospects of our newly created

Friday to see the young Ferns - AG CLS - in action when they kick off at 4.15pm in the curtain raiser against the erstwhile Army

champions the Royal Logistic Corps. Moreover we have assembled a fine management group off the field in Martin Lovegrove, Alex Davidson, Hollie Sims and Chris True. They will ensure compliance with high standards in all areas. The team will look for further success after an inaugural victory against a very physical Cardiff City outfit.

I would like to highlight the noteworthy work of

Dan Garbutt who is spearheading the

continued success of the sport in the county’s schools.

No wonder representatives of famous Wigan were in the region

recently. The plan is that all of this outstanding

endeavour will lead to the revival

of the All Golds’ under 16s and 19s that were previously such a beacon of light. The aim is simple: to become an established

force in the sport the University of Gloucestershire All Golds must create a clear and distinct route and supply line for and of local players.

Myself and Alex Davidson had an outstanding discussion recently with Dominic Cotter on his BBC Radio Gloucestershire show - all things All Gold being the order of the day.

I am often asked about a permant home for the Golden Fern - an abode where we reign supreme in a fully branded venue that does justice to our continuing ascent and ambitions. Rest assured I donate much of my time to this quest and will reveal more as plans solidify.

Meanwhile enjoy Easter and feast on a banquet of top quality Rugby League on either side of the globe. It really is the best time of year to be a treiziste! Good Friday is just that to most people but for followers of the Greatest Game it is always GREAT Friday.

Sky Try is the biggest ever programme of Rugby League in schools and is helping more children and young people have fun, get active, grow in confidence and enjoy Rugby League. The All Golds in the Community project is in its’ second year of funding for the programme and will be aiming to make the schools Rugby League programme bigger than ever before, breaking ground in new areas and looking to develop a sustainable Rugby League community game in the area.

The programme’s community coaches are currently in the middle of their first block of activity, delivering in 11 Gloucester Primary schools from across the city, and will be running the festival for this school on 18 April. After this the focus switches to secondary schools delivery, with the annual 1908 Cup and Golden Fern cups taking place on 20 May, before Cheltenham primary schools get their chance to sample the program from June onwards.

The project will be breaking new ground with a planned central venue coaching programme in the forest of dean and additional coaching into 3 Cheltenham primary schools, around the University’s Park Campus, with the aim of creating a brand new community club for the summer period. This community club will mirror the successful club that ran in Gloucester last yearand it’s anticipated that supporters will see the two clubs, aimed at 8-11 year olds, competing on the pitch as part of match day later in the year. The RFL’s Sky Try programme will continue for another 5 years and the All Golds will hope to continue delivering this programme in order to achieve the stated aim of

“Establishing Rugby League as a sustainable, well resourced and viable sport within Gloucestershire and the wider region”

The south west’s only professional rugby league club, the University of Gloucestershire All Golds, have announced that they will be overseeing a brand new pathway for talented young players. It’s hoped that it will become a foundation for the growth of the sport in the region. This development follows on from two years of successful schools development work, run as part of the Sky Sports funded “Sky Try” project. It will link into the RFL’s player development programme known as “Embed the Pathway” which aims to provide access for all players from schools and community rugby league through to the full England team. The programme is part of a four year strategy for the club to develop a performance programme underpinned by an Academy competing against the likes of Super League giants Wigan Warriors, St Helens and Leeds Rhinos. Talent Pathway Manager Dan Garbutt was keen to stress the importance of developing this pathway in a measured and gradual way.

ST GEORGECONQUER SNOWDON IN FUND-RAISER

A fortnight ago, Swindon St George players went up and down Snowdon to raise funds for a young rugby fan with a rare medical condition. It is so rare that seven-year-old Ted Grove is one of only 100 people in the world known to have it.

He was diagnosed with Aromatic Amino Acid Decarboxylase Deficiency (AADC) when he was just 18-months-old. The condition stops his brain producing dopamine and seratonin, neurotransmitters that allow it to control movement, blood flow and many other basic functions. In fact the only movement he can control is the smile that lights up his face.

Ted was referred to the internationally-renowned Great Ormond Street children’s hospital where he was put under the care of consultant Maju Kurian. She is working on pioneering gene therapy that could help him and other patients in the future.

In the meantime Ted’s parents are hoping to raise enough money to adapt their home with a through-floor lift and a specialist bath. Each costs around £10,000 and grant funding is limited. They are also looking at buying him a touchscreen computer to help him communicate because he is able to use an iPad and loves technology so much he is nicknamed ‘Gadget Boy’.

The youngster needs 24-hour care, but said dad Sven, who

used to play flanker for Swindon Supermarine RFC: “He’s very clever and he has got a beautiful smile. It’s really infectious.”

And it is his smile that has inspired the fundraising campaign.

St George skipper George Cowley approached the family with the idea of hiking Snowdonia as a pre-season exercise for Supermarine RFC and Swindon St George rugby league players to promote team bonding and raise money at the same time.

“He wanted to do something for Ted. It is a great club. They have really taken us on board,” said Sven.

Visit www.gofundme.com/TedsSmile to learn more about the campaign and how you can donate.

SO HERE’S TOYOU MR ROBINSON

The Gloucestershire Warriors have appointed 18-year-old Gloucestershire University student Matthew Robinson as their head coach for the 2016 season. The Warriors have hailed the appointment as ground-breaking: “As a rugby league club in Gloucestershire we look to give players the opportunity to play and develop their skills in the game. This season we are also giving this opportunity to a coach,” said chairman Chris Wilson.

Robinson, who used to play for the Sheffield Eagles is studying sports development at the University and is really looking

forward to starting work“I am really pleased to be given this opportunity. I am ambitious for a successful career in coaching and this is an ideal start,” he said.Anybody interested in playing rugby league this summer whatever sport if any you play at the moment should contact the Warriors at [email protected] or 07905 931033.

PHOENIX PREPARE

Cheltenham Phoenix are looking to add to their squad for this summer’s rugby league season.

Formed in 2015, Cheltenham Phoenix finished third in the West of England division last season, won the West of England 9s and reached the final of the Cup competition in what was their debut campaign.

Chairman Mike Hughes is looking to build on that success as the club gear up for their second season.

“We are looking to consolidate and grow our squad both in terms of numbers and quality,” said Hughes. “Most of our players play rugby union for a variety of rugby clubs during the winter and come together as Cheltenham Phoenix to play rugby league during the summer months.”

All new players are welcome and no prior rugby league experience is necessary.

If anyone is interested in getting involved with the club please call Phoenix Chairman Mike Hughes on 07833030987 or visit the club website at www.pitchero.com/clubs/cheltenhamphoenixrlc/

As a curtain raiser to the All Golds’ Kingstone Press League 1 game with Coventry Bears the club’s CLS side face the Royal Logistic Corps in what coach Alex Davidson describes as an “exciting test for the young boys”.

Having performed well in their previous game with Cardiff City, Davidson is able to select from the same squad and has been able to add some experience to it with Josh Williams, Liam Rice-Wilson, James Mason and Richard Jones under consideration.

Should Jones play, it will mark a welcome return from a long absence through a knee injury that has kept him out for the whole of last season.

“The Royal Logistic Corps will provide a good test for us, especially physically,” said Davidson. “Hopefully the boys will develop what we’ve worked on since the Cardiff game and test them with our shape and skill along with rising to the physical test.

“Our attack and defence shape required improvement from

our last outing but we need to keep the same physicality and enthusiasm”, he added.

A 20-man squad will be selected from the following:

Aedan Coleman, Andy Gamble, Archie Gibbs, Brendon Denton, Callum Bradbury, Connor Jones, Connor Whittall, Dieter Thomas, Dom Tydeman, Gareth Flounders, Hector Silva, Jack Binks, Jack Uren, James Mason, Jarrod Simm, Joe Festa, Joe Rider, Jono Hinton, Josh Du Plessis, Josh Williams, Liam Rice Wilson, Richard Jones, Rory Sharratt, Sam Hodge, Stef Archer, Wijnand Wormhoudt.

Davidson’s side will face a team looking to regain its crown as Army champions having won the title in 2013 and 2014.

The RLC team is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and brings together soldiers from all over the Corps, which is held in high esteem by other Regiments in the British Army, other Armed Forces and organisations across the world owing to their reputation for logistic excellence and delivery often under extremely arduous conditions.

Team manager WO1 Nick Watkins RLC emphasises the point, saying: “Our distinctive military character, spirit and attitude pulls us together as a team and as a club. We place Club success over self interest and strive to uphold the legacy and values of the Corps. We are sustained by strong leadership, dedicated contributors and high personal standards. We are bound by a strong sense of tradition and belonging to a Club of which we are immensely proud”.

Coached by Sgt Danny Rogers, the RLC squad for the game is as follows:

LCpl Kristian Herbert, Pte Jake Boardman, Pte Joe Vuwai, LCpl Rob Clark, LCpl Luke Wilson, Sgt Kimi Vuadrau, Pte Liam Johnson, LCpl Tony Eccles, Pte Alex Iveson, Pte Jack Mitchell, Cpl Lloyd Allen, Pte Adam Broadhurst, LCpl Scott Snow, Pte Karl Cummings, SSgt Aaron Morfitt, Cpl Alex Hicken, LCpl Dan Coombs, LCpl Sikeli Ratu, Pte Epeli Kotobalavu, Cpl Lewis Allen.

Kick off is at 4.15pm on Good Friday at the Prince of Wales Stadium.
