“BE CONNECTED,
MOVING FORWARD
AND
MEMBERSHIP”by
Alpha Mu State
President
Audrey Collins As we move into autumn, I want to send you all my best wishes
as you return to classrooms, plan programs for another year in your
chapters, or do the other things that I know are on all your busy
schedules.
I would like to thank those of you that answered the call to
leadership. I’m happy to say that by the end of our executive board
meeting, all the committees and chair positions were filled. One of
my goals is to support committee chairs and facilitate committees
working collaboratively and effectively to move our state
organization forward. Additionally, as chapters are organizing for
the next year, I know many of you are either continuing in leadership
roles or taking on new responsibilities. I sincerely appreciate what
all of you do! Please keep in mind that I would be happy to assist
you in any way I can.
The Fall Executive Board meeting was held in September and
addressed the business of Alpha Mu State. There was good
representation from throughout the state and we were able to share
ideas, provide information and make connections. Thank you to
everyone who took time out and made the commitment to attend.
There will be updated information on our website on the recruitment
grants, scholarships, mini grants and lifelong learning grants. If you
have trouble accessing any of these forms, feel free to contact me to
get you in touch with the right person.
One topic of discussion at executive board was a state project.
We talked about a few ideas, but I am asking for your thoughts or
suggestions for a project that all chapters in the state could take part
in (if they wish), that would relate to our purposes, get members
involved, provide some benefit or answer a need and shine a light on
DKG as an organization. Please let me know if you have ideas. I’ll
consider these suggestions and send on more information as a
project takes shape.
Another goal of mine is to encourage communication. All chapter
presidents have received the current state directories with contact
information for officers, related personnel, committees, past state
presidents and chapter presidents. Please keep me updated with any
changes so we can keep our information current. Remember to let
international and state know if you change addresses or emails. We
can help our organization by doing this and making sure newsletters
and other mailings aren’t returned by the postal service. I will also
work to be your connection to International and pass on information
as I receive it.
Finally, I have scheduled some chapter visits and would be
happy to get others on my calendar. Please get in touch with me
if your chapter would like me to come to one of your meetings. I
will try my best to accommodate your chapter plans. I loved
getting the chance to meet new members and see old friends as I
made a few visits last year. I look forward to seeing the wonderful
things your chapters are accomplishing.
Alpha Mu State Treasurer Maureen Watt (Omicron) is the
new State Treasurer for Alpha Mu
State. She has served as the
treasurer for both the local unit and
the district for the American Legion
Auxiliary and the Anaconda
Teachers Union.
She reminds you that the dues for
the coming year are due to the
chapter treasurer by October 31, 2017. A reminder for all local
treasurers, please send a copy of your IRS 990 e-postcard which
must be filed by November 15, 2017 to me.
Maureen would like to say Thank You to Pat Jones, who
served as the previous treasurer, for all the work she did.

ALPHA MU STATE CONVENTION Recording Secretary LaVonne Borgreen (Zeta)
Alpha Mu State members congregated at the Grouse Mountain
Lodge in Whitefish, Montana on June 9, 2017. It was rainy and cold
Friday and Saturday but it did not affect the conference. If we had
only known we would not see rain again until after the fall executive
board meeting in September! Service at the Lodge was impeccable
and the view magnificent. There were four state officers, three
related personnel, six society business chairmen, four chairmen of
excellence in education, five Alpha Mu State committee chairmen,
nine past presidents and thirteen chapter presidents with three
substitutes. Forty-eight members and two guests were registered for
the convention. Deputy Mayor Richard Hellner of Whitefish, who
is a retired teacher, welcomed Alpha Mu State members to
Whitefish and gave a brief history of “Stump Town’ to “Ski Town.”
The inspiration “It Couldn’t Be Done” by Edgar Albert Guest was
presented by Genelle Hocevar (Delta).
The convention is a time of discussion, making changes and
honoring members. The rules committee, chaired by Maureen Watt,
had several changes to make. These changes are now available on
the Alpha Mu State website. As we know Alphamusings is the
biggest expense of the state budget. It is very important that
members give Editor Joyce English any change in address.
Concerning reports given by Linda Clark (Theta), of the scholarship
committee and Lorran Depner (Alpha Gamma) of the recruitment
committee is the lack of applicants for the grants and awards
programs. Alpha Mu State has much to offer but no one is applying.
Forty-five members received recognition for ten to sixty year
membership of Alpha Mu State. Billie Collins (Upsilon) received
the Catherine Nutterville Achievement Award. Maureen Watt
(Omicron) was elected to be the new state treasurer. The raffle for
world fellowship raised $530.00 and the silent auction raised
$588.00 to assist members attending the regional conference. A
contribution of $100 was given to the Golden Legacy Fund in
memory of Past State President Joyce Fiechtner and $100.00 was
given to the Golden Legacy Fund in memory of Past State President
Virginia Speck.
The Birthday Luncheon started with an inspiration given by
Lloyd-Ann MacMahan (Mu). She gave a picturesque description of
the beauty found in the world but went on to explain that you have
to have it inside you in order to find it. Senator Dee Brown
(Lambda) introduced the guest speaker, President of Flathead Valley
Community College Dr. Jane Karas. She gave a brief description of
how the school is funded and the advantages of a community
college.
The first workshop was presented by Dr. John McKennen on
Relative Maturity and Adolescent Academic Performance. Dr.
McKennen is a psychiatrist and has operated the Montana
Academies for 20 years. He explained how the school began, is
operated and how it differs from other programs.
The workshop presented by Diane Yarus on ‘Trafficking: Issues
and Intervention Best for Women,’ explained the relationship
between the falling of the wall in Berlin and the increase of
trafficking in America. She also explained the new norms of
trafficking and what is being done in Montana.
During the president’s banquet, DKG International guest, Dr.
Hanna Fowler, presented “What Makes A Strong Member?” The
world is changing and DKG International is changing with it.
Elections, membership and the constitution are just a few of the
items that are being reviewed. She emphasized that we should never
say, “That’s the way it has always been done!” What makes a strong
member is: (1) Believe in what you are a part of, (2) Know the DKG
heritage and Founders, (3) Say yes when asked to serve - It may
change your life, (4) Ask questions - educate yourself, (5) Dare to
have a conversation, (6) Be a sponge, (7) Experience DKG and the
fellowships you have.
On Sunday, Dr. Hanna Fowler encouraged members to give time
to their chapters and to have face to face invitations to meetings.
Many lives may be touched by belonging to Delta Kappa Gamma.
We need to keep an open mind, look at all the issues and look to the
future. She closed with one of Mary Bigler’s Lessons Learned, “I
Can’t Do It!”
FALL EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETINGRecording Secretary LaVonne Borgreen (Zeta)
The Fall Executive
Board meeting was held at
the Heritage Inn in Great
F a l l s o n S a t u r d a y ,
September 9, 2017. There
were three state officers,
three related personnel, four
society business chairman,
eight chapter presidents with
seven substitutes and six
past state presidents. There
were a total of 27 members present.
President Audrey Collins declared her themes: “Be Connected,
Moving Forward and Membership.” She wants to focus on
developing the leadership of all segments of Alpha Mu State and
encourages chapters to schedule her visit for the 2017-2018 year.
Former State Treasurer Pat Jones (Gamma) and current State
Treasurer Maureen Watt (Omicron) worked together to present the
financial statement, investment and savings, convention costs and
current member enrollment. Maureen Watt requests that chapters
pay their dues before or by October 31.
Rebecca Marinko (Rho) would like to have an Art Gallery on
the Alpha Mu State website. Her photographs were juried into The
DKG Fine Arts Gallery and may be observed online. She would
like to recognize the artists of Alpha Mu State that would be open
to any fine art presentation. Her committee will set up a
qualification standard and present it at the 2019 state convention.
Contact her at [email protected] with your ideas.
Calendar events were discussed which affect the Leadership
Development Workshop and the 2019 State Convention. The
discussion centered on having the events in April or June. Chapter
presidents are encouraged to discuss this with their members and
report back to Rebecca Marinko at [email protected] for the
convention and Jan Nerem [email protected] for the Leadership
Development Workshop. (Continued on page 5)
Page 5 A lphamusings, Alpha Mu State Organization, Montana Octo ber 2017
(Fall Executive Board meeting continued from page 4)
Current committees were also on the agenda of new business
especially (EEC) educational excellence. At the present time this
committee has three subcommittees: personal growth and services
committee which is responsible for lifelong learning stipends,
professional affairs committee who selects the recipient of
recruitment awards to college students and legislation. Each
subcommittee has a chairman and a committee to carry out their
work and they are responsible to report to the Education Excellence
Committee and to the Executive Board. Committee members may
be selected from the chairman’s chapter area to involve more
members in the work. Action on the matter was deferred to the 2019
state convention. Contact President Audrey Collins at
[email protected] with your thoughts.
Another discussion was combining the membership committee
and the expansion committee in that they both deal with
membership. This has to be presented at a state convention.
The sales committee was discussed. Charmaine Mansheim
(Alpha Alpha) agreed to chair the committee in order to disburse
items that presently exist. Discussion included the purpose of the
committee and is it needed? This will be proposed at the state
convention.
Genelle Hocevar (Delta) volunteered to chair the Scholarship
Committee. She made the motion to award four $1000 scholarships
for the 2017-2018 year. Hopefully this will generate more interest.
Also, those working on the National Board Certification may apply.
There was discussion of going digital with the memorial book and
the scrapbook pages.
President Audrey Collins would like to see a statewide project.
Chapters are encouraged to contact her with their proposals at
As you can see there was a lot of discussion about the future of
Alpha Mu State. Attending the executive board meeting is important
and there will be a lot of changes at the next convention. You are
encouraged to update yourself with the information provided in
Alphamusings and give your opinion.
Alpha Mu State ConventionLori McCurdy (Upsilon) co-chairman
School ended in early June for many schools across Montana so
the 2017 Alpha Mu State convention was a great beginning to
summer vacation. Thank you to those who traveled to Grouse
Mountain Lodge in Whitefish June 9-11. The convention theme was,
“Climb Every Mountain,” and there were 48 members and two
guests registered to attend. Hosting chapters: Lambda, Upsilon and
Phi provided table decorations and hosted a hospitality room. In
addition to a scenic venue and delicious meals, members conducted
business and heard several top-notch speakers.
Dr. Hanna Fowler from International, shared, “What Makes a
Member Stronger.” Local speakers Diane Yarus, Jane Karas and
John McKennon spoke about trafficking issues in Montana, the role
of community colleges and a Montana academy designed to help
struggling students. Tables were covered with beautiful baskets for
the silent auction (which raised $588) and the World Fellowship
raffle earned $530.
Upsilon member, Billee Collins, received the Catherine
Nutterville Award, and membership certificates were given to honor
those who have been members from 10 to 60 years. A memorial
ceremony on Sunday morning honored those we lost in the past two
years, including Past State Presidents Virginia Speck and Joyce
Fiechtner.
If you attended this convention, we hope to see you at the next
one in 2019. Never been to one? Start planning now. It’s a great
opportunity to connect with other members across the state.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:Educational Excellence (EEC)
Alpha Mu State 1st Vice President Rebecca Marinko (Rho)
Rebecca said, “It is my honor to serve as the First Vice President
and Educational Excellence Committee (EEC) chair for Alpha Mu
State. Since late June and early July, I have learned a great deal
about the working of the EEC and hope to make it a vibrant
committee that enriches the work of our chapters statewide.”
“According to the 2017 Bylaws and Standing Rules, the EEC
works to promote programs and projects for excellence in
education, supports programs that promote personal well-being,
intellectual growth and global awareness of women educators,
encourages emphasis on the arts and develops strategies to enable
chapters to encourage leadership. Additionally, subcommittees of
EEC select recipients of lifelong learning grants and recruitment
awards and keeps members informed regarding legislation affecting
education, all of which are big jobs. At the last executive board
meeting, members of the committee stated that the current structure
was cumbersome and may actually inhibit the committee from
functioning as efficiently as it could. As a result, the committee will
be studying the function of the committee and perhaps suggest
restructuring it. Ideas from the membership of the society are
welcome, so please email me your ideas at [email protected].
“One of my areas of interest is to encourage the emphasis on art.
Another area of focus will be the creation of an online gallery to
showcase the artistic talents of our Alpha Mu State members, similar
to that of the Online Gallery of DKG International. The Alpha Mu
State gallery will not be juried, and we will accept submissions from
everyone. The only stipulation is that the work must be original. We
will be looking for exhibits of visual arts of any media, photography,
poetry, short stories or quilts to name a few. The sky is the limit, so
be thinking about which of your talents you would like to share.
This idea is in its infancy and there are lots of details that need to be
worked out, but watch for more information in future issues of
Alphamusings.
“In parting, I hope that all chapters will consider a project to
bring your chapter together working for educational excellence.
Here again, you are limited only by the imagination and interests of
your members. There are mini grants available if you need a little
help financially to get started and do not forget to promote your
activities so everyone sees DKG as a group of women who get
things done.”

Get Well Wishes Past State President Carolyn O’Mara, had an automobileaccident on her way back to her home in Nevada. She left herhome in Kalispell August 7 and was in a multiple car accidenton August 8 near Joshua Tree, CA. Her car was totaled! Shewas in the hospital there until August 13. Although she did notsustain any broken bones, she is not yet out of the woods.Friends picked her up and took her to Henderson. Carolyn is very active in a DKG chapter in Henderson, NVand has served two terms as their president. She had attendedour state convention in Whitefish. I am sure she would like to receive some cards from
Alpha Mu State members. Carolyn O’Mara, 428 Opal Drive,Henderson, NV 89015-6833, [email protected].

Once again, we find ourselves at the beginning of a new Delta
Kappa Gamma year. We look around and wonder where last year
has gone, but it’s time to embrace the year 2017-2018. As chapters
meet to plan and prepare for this new year, are you taking the time
to assess your membership and your members? Have you canvassed
your area for possible new members? Have you taken a close look
at the present members of your chapter?
Now would be a good time to survey the pattern of chapter
meeting attendance of your members. By doing this you may
discover some ways to support and enhance participation in chapter
meetings. Do you find members who struggle attending chapter
meetings because of transportation difficulties? Do you find
members who show up to meetings when they can be actively
engaged in a project but are not present when the meetings are more
business-like? Do you have young members whose meeting
attendance depends on finding childcare?
Once a survey of chapter meeting attendance has been conducted,
you can make accommodations so that your chapter can have a
varied and rich group of members. Embrace each members’
contributions to the chapter and celebrate the gifts they bring to the
group. Surely, someone in the group would be happy to offer rides
to meetings as well as those who enjoy engaging in projects can
offer ideas for the chapter to pursue while those who enjoy the
business can keep the chapter running smoothly.
Membership: It’s a new Delta Kappa Gamma year. “Mine” for
new members, but also work to keep present members engaged and
active in the projects and activities of the chapter. Have a wonderful
year.
ScholarshipFOUR $1000 SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS

Catherine Nutterville AwardChairman Billee Collins (Upsilon)
Words from Billie Collins, “Receiving the Catherine Nutterville
award was a great honor. To be in the same league with Catherine
Nutterville and the past recipients was a humbling experience for
me.
“Catherine Nutterville was a great lady and educator. She was our
first president of Alpha Mu State, 1945-1948. She set high standards
for our state organization and lived them judiciously during her
years as a Delta Kappa Gamma member.
“As chair for this committee, my hope is that one of the many
deserving members in the 23 chapters of Alpha Mu State will
receive recognition of this award when it is given in 2019. I know
that my responsibility is to disseminate the necessary information
to each chapter to help you in the selection process. Then, the
responsibility becomes yours. Only you are able to recognize the
excellent qualities, attributes and dedication to the principles of
Delta Kappa Gamma in your members. Now is the time to begin
the process of choosing that deserving member of your chapter.
“I will soon be sending the forms for qualification and
selection. If you have questions I will try to get you the answers.

Margaret Palagi, 92, of Great
Falls, passed away on Saturday, May
13, 2017 at Hospice House following
a valiant battle with cancer. Family
services will be at a later date.
Margaret DeHahn was born on
April 22, 1925 to George and Helen
DeHahn in San Francisco, CA. After
a few years in California, the family
moved to Montana where Margaret
would graduate from Great Falls High School in 1943. It was
about this time that Margaret met her life’s greatest love, Howard
Palagi. They were married on August 24, 1948.
Margaret attended the College of Great Falls and graduated in
1946. She taught at the Pleasant Valley School near Fort Benton,
in Dutton and in Stockett. She returned to Dutton before coming
to Great Falls where she taught from 1960 until she retired in
1981.
Margaret was President of North Central District Classroom
Teachers. She was initiated into Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa
Gamma in 1965 and had received her 50 year pin. She was a
member for 52 years. In Delta Chapter she was program chairman,
corresponding secretary, sick and courtesy chairman and a part of
the calling committee for many years.
Margaret was a regular at all of Delta’s meetings and supported
all of Delta Chapter’s activities. She was devoted to her family,
friends and Delta Kappa Gamma sisters. She was a beloved

For Sharon, “no child left behind” wasn’t a ‘political slogan’
it was how she conducted her career. She went above and beyond.
She learned sign language so she could integrate two deaf students
into a public school and then taught sign language to their
classmates so they could communicate with each other. She took
on students with significant disabilities who otherwise wouldn’t
have been able to attend public schools. She introduced
technology into the Butte School District.
