I will be forever grateful to Harriet Sartain and Fr. Tom Elewaut for their faith in me and for offering me the position of Alumni Director. For the past 13 years I have worked under the direction of Fr. Ed Jalbert, who never micro-managed, only offering guidance or suggestions on occasion, but mostly for believing in me and allowing me to build the Alumni Office into what it has be- come today - thank you! After much thought and prayer, the time feels right to pass the torch on to someone else. I have been incredibly blessed to be your Alumni Director for so many years. During this time I’ve renewed friendships, created new and lifetime friendships, worked through the good and the difficult times, and have never waivered in my belief that St. Joseph High School is the best high school on the Central Coast. I strongly believe that I have the best job on campus. Even the passing of alumni has shown me the connections that are made here on the campus, as classes have gathered to remember and honor their classmates. Over the years, the Alumni Director position has grown to include many annual events. Bringing back the Homecoming Bon Fire for several years was a huge undertaking, requiring hundreds of hours of preparation, creating the Knights, Wines, & Brews (formerly Roses) event 12 years ago has become a much bigger event than ever anticipated. Alumni BBQ’s, Reunions, Scholarship fundraisers and Alumni games are just a few of the events led by the Alumni Office. I would have to say the Grandparent lunches (held twice yearly) and the Outstanding Alumni Award have become my favorite events. I love seeing the grandparents & students together, and meeting and hearing about the wonderful things our alumni do is incredibly humbling. Here’s the kicker, none of these events would have been possible without the many volunteers I have been so lucky to work with. Although there are way too many to list, there are a few that for years have gone over and above, giving up vacation time and taking days off work, spending years on the Alumni Board or other committees, and always bringing excitement and a great energy to all they did. That said, a special thank you to the following: Robert Bonilla, Mike & Ann Epperly , Trish Combs, Karri Jaeckels Zurliene, Carol Niccoli, Martin & Debi Testa, Dan & Jan Kleinsmith, Jon & Cindy McKellar, Sally Hamill, Dereka Anderson, Randy, Toni & Katie Jetter, Tony & Kori Gonzales, Noreen Freitas, Cliff Labastida, Tammy Hartman, Margaret Garcia, Luis Perez and Ron Chrest. Your friendship, dedication and help throughout the years will never be forgotten. Along with me, my sidekick and biggest help throughout all 16 years will also retire from the Alumni Office. My husband, Scott Jaeckels, and I met on this very campus back in 1973 when we were freshmen. We began dating in late 1975 and have now been married 35 years. We knew from the day both our children were born (Jen class of ‘03 & Josh class of ‘05) where they would attend high school. So as you can see, St. Joe’s has given me more than just an education, it has given me a family. I hope you will embrace your new Alumni Director as warmly as you did me and continue to stay connected to your alma mater. THANK YOU ST. JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI! Sixteen years ago, I walked back onto the St. Joe campus, not as a student, but as an employee. It felt like I was com-ing home. I will be forever grateful to Harriet Sartain and Fr. Tom Elewaut for their faith in me and for offering me the position of Alumni Director. For the past 13 years I have worked under the direction of Fr. ‘74 Congratulations to Robert Bonilla and his bride Meredith on their marriage on December 21, 2014. Now if you know Robert, you know he has a new idea for almost everything. Having met at Costco in Santa Maria, Robert figured this was the very place they should get married, and yes, he made it happen. Walking down the frozen food aisle lined with well wishers, Robert and Meredith said “I Do!.” The happy couple are at home in Santa Maria.

‘77 After 35 years of Federal Service Eve Mentink Pearce retired as a Special Agent with the Federal Investigative Service this past October. Eve and her husband Roger have been married for 35 years and have two sons. With several projects underway, Eve received an opportunity to become a head counselor/instructor and will help train on special assignments. So, it’s back to work for a little while longer. ‘80 Congratulations to Karl (Schlosser) Dandenell on receiving the December Reader’s Choice poll at FictionVortex.com for his short story “An Alien Warmth”. Other publications for Karl include - “Layover” at Buzzymag.com and “Human Faces” at Perihelionsf.com.

‘82 After graduating from UCSB in 1987, Vanessa Brannon Wood moved to South Lake Tahoe where she continued the fun as a professional ski instructor at Heavenly Valley Ski Resort for 10 years. During that time she met and married a fellow ski instructor, Robert, and has been married for 20 years. They have one son, Travis(15) who keeps them busy as they watch him develop his ice hockey skills as he participates this summer on a Minnesota AAA Select Ice Hockey team. For the past 11 years Vanessa has been employed by the El Dorado County Probation Dept. as a Senior Deputy Probation Officer. Vanessa says, “I have many blessings in my life including the years I attended St. Joseph High School”. One of those

blessings is her friendship with Melanie Girard Elliot ‘82. Their connection stays strong and they talk about retiring together somewhere with their husbands and laughing away their remaining years in rocking chairs.

‘93 A recent article in the Santa Maria Times featured Mike Maroney and his quest to reunite with a little girl he rescued on a roof top in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The little girl was only 4 or 5 at the time, but he experienced a “life affirming” moment he will never forget. He was lowered from a helicopter past trees and powerlines to get to the girl and her family. While rescuing her, he looked down and “She’s like having a blast.” he said. All that mattered while looking at the devastation below, was this little girl in his arms smiling up at him. Mike has performed rescues and other high risk missions all over the world during his 18 year career in the Air Force and continues the quest to find this little girl. Mike has two sons and resides in Texas. You can see Mike and his story on a video posted on YouTube (titled “New Orleans Katrina Story”).

‘96 Welcoming the newest member to their family, Jim McGarry and his wife Michele Testa McGarry ‘01, were blessed with the arrival of their son James Henry on April 13, 2015. Helping to keep an eye on James is big sister, Reagan Grace. ‘98 Once again, Doug Bernier has been called up to the majors. Doug’s contract was purchased by the Minnesota Twins on May 6th and he played that night in the Twins 13-0 win over Oakland. Congrats Doug, and keep up the good work. ‘01 Brent and Kristin Schonfeld Wagstaff were thrilled to welcome their second daughter, Kadence, in October of 2014. Big sister Kynsey is so proud of “Sissy” and loves helping care for her. With a female cat and dog, it’s a

house full of girls for this little family! ‘03 Married for nearly two years now, Chris Torres and Laura Soto Torres ‘04 became husband and wife on July 25, 2013. The happy couple are at home in Orcutt. Chris works for GLR Construction, a government contractor that operates throughout CA, AZ and TX. Laura works for the County Office of Education as a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Specialist for the school district. ‘05 Celebrating her five year work anniversary at Community Health Centers last fall, Madisyn Masatani works in the Human Resources Dept. and really enjoys her work. Moving recently into her own home, Madisyn says her free time is spent working on house projects, and she can’t believe how fast the past 10 years since high school have gone. “It always suprises me to hear about classmates getting married and having kids,” says Madisyn. Congratulations to Juliette Oram, or should I say “Dr. Oram”, on receiving her Doctor of Medicine degree from Tulane University in New Orleans on May 16, 2015. 50th Anniversary Dinner On March 28, 2015, St. Joseph High School celebrated its 50th anniversary in style! With over 250 guests and celebrated honorees in attendance, a delicious dinner was prepared by Testa Catering, owned by Martin & Debi Testa from the class of 1972. Attendees included members of the first graduating class of St. Joseph High School, many long-time family school families, past and present staff and faculty members, as well as former Principals: Fr. Mark Newman, Fr. Charles Hofschulte, George Majoue and Joe Myers. A proclamation recogniz-ing the fifty years of St. Joseph High School was presented by Alice Patino, Mayor of Santa Maria and Peter Adam (1981), 4th District Supervisor. The evening was capped off with a video produced by Mannie Silva (1975), owner of TSM Productions, featuring highlights of the 50 years of Knights.

Also included in the celebration was the presentation of two ‘Endowed Teacher of Distinction’ awards. The recipients were chosen based upon nominations submitted by St. Joseph High School Alumni. The honorees were Sister Catherine Sullivan, DMJ and Mrs. Geraldine May. Sister Catherine served as the vice-principal of St. Joseph from 1969 – 1983. Her no-nonsense style and firm expectations were overshadowed only by her sincere concern and caring for her students. Mrs. May taught English at St. Joseph from 1985 – 2009. Many of her former students expressed that she taught them not only writing skills and comprehension, but the creative and critical thinking skills beneficial throughout life.

The evening was topped off by the singing of the St. Joseph High School Alma Mater. What a wonderful way to unite all past and present Knights! Even after 50 years, it is clear the saying still holds true.....

“ONCE A KNIGHT, ALWAYS A KNIGHT!”

“SARK” Greg Sarkisian, better known to most as “Sark” has been a fixture on this campus for what seems like forever. After 37 years of teaching and coaching, Sark is handing in his keys and taking that wonderful step we all look forward to ~ RETIREMENT! Some people love to teach. Some people love to coach, then there are those that love to do both. That would be Sark. One of the most loved people on our campus, Sark began back in the fall of 1977. Teaching math and mentoring students became a passion for Sark, and he was good at it. With the enjoyment of teaching, he added on coaching, first with Cross Country and then with Track, and guess what, he was good at that too. Students would be walking down the hall and Sark would yell out, “Hey you. Are you signed up for Track?’ He didn’t even have to know who the kid was or if he or she had any athletic ability, everyone was welcome on the Track team. After coaching Track for 34 years, Sark handed over the Track reigns to two very capable coaches. He should know, he coached them both, Sam Schur ‘08 and Philip Adam ‘06. Several former students and athletes have sent in letters of congratulations and thanks to Greg. If you would like to send a letter or card to Sark, please send them to St. Joseph High School Alumni Office (GS) and we will make sure to get them to him. To Greg Sarkisian - for all you have done and meant to St. Joseph High School - THANK YOU!

ESTABLISHING A CLASS SCHOLARSHIP

The class of 1995 has asked about establishing a class scholarship, keeping in mind their deceased classmate, Steve Kapphahn. Below is a guide line to establishing a class scholarship. Wouldn’t it be great if each class was able to create one of these! Many classes have more than one deceased classmate and their names would be included in these scholarships and added to as we lose classmates.

The process of establishing a scholarship fund:An individual, a family or a class can create a scholarship fund through a series of or a single donation. When the scholarship fund

contains a principal of $2,000, it becomes “active” and a $500 annually renewable award can be offered to a student in need of tuition assistance.

The growth of a scholarship fund:If subsequent donations do not exceed the $500 annual scholarship commitment, the fund is eventually exhausted and the scholarship is

extinguished.

If subsequent donations exceed the $500 annual award, the fund will continue to grow. If the fund reaches a principal of $10,000, the scholarship fund becomes a permanent “endowed” scholarship fund.

Class of 1995 – Steve Kapphahn Memorial Scholarship FundAs the Class of 1995 is the first class in over 20 years to inquire about establishing a scholarship fund, the school would like to support the class’ effort. For one year, beginning with the first donation received by the school, the school will offer up to a total of $5,000 in

matching funds for the donations made to the Class of 1995 – Steve Kapphahn Memorial Scholarship fund.

Donations should be made to St. Joseph High School with a note in the memo portion of the check “Class of 1995 – Steve Kapphahn Memorial Scholarship Fund.” The objective is to establish an “endowed” scholarship fund. For the near future, the preferred recipient

of the scholarship would be a child of a member of the class of 1995.

“SARK”Standing in front of E-3, where he has taught thousands of students. Thanks for all you have brought to St. Joseph High School. YOU WILL BE MISSED!

SPIRIT OF ST. JOSEPH MASS AND OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD

A NOTE FROM SR. CATHERINE

Congratulations to the teachers, staff, students, parents and alumni

of St. Joseph High School.

Fifty years is but a drop of water in the immense oceanbut look at the marvels God has accomplished

in the Northern Outpost of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles....

Saint Joseph High School, Santa Maria!I am most grateful to God for calling me to be a part of

the SJHS Family:For the friendships we have formed;

the ways in which we have influenced and been influenced;

the memories we treasure.After an absence of 20 years the Lord has called me

back to Santa Maria.From my ministry at SLDM Parish

I am privileged to interact with the SJHS community again;

to rejoice in the growth that continues;the bright light that SJHS is for the Santa Maria Valley.

I rejoice with you, I congratulate you, I pray for you that you may continue to

STAND PROUD AND TALL...ST. JOSEPH, HAIL TO YOU!

CELEBRATIONSOn April 16, 2015, the St. Joseph High School community was privileged to have Archbishop Jose Gomez preside over the Spirit of St. Joseph Mass. It’s been 20 years since we were graced with an Archbishop celebrating Mass on our campus, and the importance was not lost on the students, faculty or staff. As we celebrated our 50 years of Knights, this Mass was very meaningful and we were honored with not only the Archbishop, but many of the past priests that have been such a large part of the history of St. Joseph High School.

Handed out at this Mass was the Outstanding Alumni Award. This year brought special meaning to this award as the recipient was honored for his selfless generos-ity in the aid of another - who just so happens to be a fellow Knight.

Steve Mussell from the class of 1983 has a disease named Polycystic Kidney Dis-ease, an inherited disease, which slowly over the years begins to shut down the kidneys. Steve was at the point where he was going to need a new kidney and the waiting list could take anywhere from 5 to 7 years. During that time Steve would need to be on dialysis and chances were, other complications could, and probably would, arise during that time. Steve Iwasko from the class of 1992 happens to be a good friend of Steve M. and after hearing of his friend’s situation, he went home and told his mom, “I’m going to give Steve a kidney,” and he did just that. There was no hesitation about being tested and the results couldn’t have been any better. He was a perfect match. The surgery took place on January 14th and the outcome has been amazing. Steve M. says, “He has given me a gift I can never repay.”

Steve Iwasko also has a job that gives back. He is a police officer with the Guada-lupe Police Dept. and in addition, he has donated time to the Boys & Girls Club, been a big brother, helped BBQ at numerous fundraisers and so much more.

Congratulations on a well deserved award, and from one Knight to another, THANK YOU Steve Iwasko for providing the gift that keeps on giving.
