Free Release Measurements

AMEC Nuclear Slovakia have measured and

released radwaste for SE-ENEL and ČEZ and

performed operations at EBO, EMO and Temelín

NPPs. Processed solid waste included concrete

rubble, bricks, refractory bricks, porous concrete

blocks, coal, filters, textiles, plastics, resins and steel

etc.

Company possess two measurement units RADOS

and SMEGA. SMEGA measurement unit was

designed and manufactured by AMEC Nuclear

Slovakia and approved by Slovak and Czech

regulatory bodies.

AMEC Nuclear Slovakia

The AMEC Nuclear Slovakia company is involved as a contractor in the area of

characterization of liquid radioactive wastes namely sludge and resins and their

treatment in V-1, V-2 NPP in Jaslovske Bohunice, NPP Mochovce (Slovak

Republic), NPP Dukovany and NPP Temelin (Czech Republic). These are NPPs

with pressurized water reactors (PWR).

The inorganic SIAL® matrix for immobilisation and solidification of various

radioactive waste streams as sludge, ion exchange resins, ashes, deposits has

been developed by AMEC Nuclear Slovakia Company

Radioactive sludge / resins treatment

17

AMEC Nuclear Slovakia

The SIAL matrix is a product of polycondensation of inorganic compounds. During

solidification process inorganic solids (mainly compounds of Si and Al) are dosed

into the drum during stirring at room temperature.

The solid products have low leachability of radionuclides and very high

compressive strength

In the year 2003, Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ÚJD SR) granted the

permission for the NPP A-1 to use the SIAL matrix for safe disposal of radioactive

waste. In the year 2007

Czech Nuclear Authority (SUJB) granted the permission for NPP Temelin to use

the SIAL® matrix for solidification of mixtures of radioactive sludge and resins and

safe disposal of solidified RAW.

The main goal of this kind of solidification is very fast and simple transformation of

radioactive wastes into much more safer solid form which is suitable for handling,

transport and also for storage.
