Venice is very unusual. Look at the pictures. What can you see there?What cant you see that there is in other cities?

Venice

1 Venice is a very strange city. It has the shapeof a fish! It is more than 1,000 years old and

it has many famous buildings. In the past, itwas a very important city in the world.

2 Venice doesnt have normal streets.There are no cars, buses, taxis ortrucks. Instead, there are canals andboats! There are more than 200canals and more than 400 bridges.

3 The houses dont standon the ground! There isonly sand in Venice andit is impossible to buildon that. The peoplepushed wood into theground and then builttheir houses.

4 In the past, everyone traveled inlong, thin boats, called gondolas.

The gondolier (who controls thegondola) stands up and uses onlyone oar to move the boat. Now,most people use motorboats butyou can still see gondolas.

5 Venice has many festivals.During carnevale, inFebruary, people wearspecial clothes and masks.

Long ago, they used themasks so that nobody knewthem at the parties!

6 In September, theyhave the regatta. Very

old boats race on thewidest canal in Veniceand everybody wearshistorical clothes from500 years ago.
