American Graduate: Getting To Work Issues involving jobs and unemployment are an ongoing public concern across Central Ohio. WOSU Public Media is advancing the conversation about work, especially the need for high-skilled workers in thousands of open positions in our community. As part of the national initiative, American Graduate: Getting to Work, WOSU is engaging the public on air, online and in the community on a key message — the imperative to prepare students with the skill sets and training needed to be part of the new workforce, especially for high-demand fields.
The podcast series, Rivet is a big push towards that end. It invites young adults to “step off the conventional career path and follow the next generation of workers as they find well-paying jobs they enjoy.” It was launched in November 2018 with six compelling stories. Look for a second series in a few months. On WOSU TV getting-to-work experiences are revealed in short videos such as one of teens discussing lessons from their first jobs and another of a young man who found a pre-apprenticeship program as the way out of life on the streets.
WOSU is one of 19 stations to receive a two-year grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) for American Graduate: Getting to Work. We are working with public television stations in Cleveland and Cincinnati on a state model to address issues of education and career readiness that may be used across the country. Last October, all three stations hosted a digital public forum with the candidates for Ohio governor. Thousands of students across the state were connected to the event and asked questions of the candidates.
Look for much more from WOSU across our radio, television and digital platforms about American Graduate: Getting to Work.

Rivet: Connect to the StoriesWhen I talked to 14-year-old Dashawn Hodge, he couldn’t help but gush about his dream car – a Chrysler 200 with a V8 engine in a shiny solid black color. He hoped to start earnestly saving for this ride during the Boys and Girls Club Columbus’s Summer Work Program. The program put youth aged 14-16, like Dashawn, to work in their first jobs ever. Dashawn supervised young kids while earning $9 per hour, 20 hours each week, for eight weeks. The program taught him money saving techniques and the interpersonal skills you need on the job. Owning a car meant independence to Dashawn. Working brought him a step closer to this goal.
Dashawn was one of a dozen interviews I conducted for Rivet, a new podcast series that WOSU created as an answer to the question: how do you create a podcast that focuses on the skills gap in Central Ohio? And what even is this skills gap exactly? The skills gap relates to the 270,000 open jobs going unfilled in Columbus that pay $22 an hour and don’t require a four-year degree. When you put these open jobs together with the fact that nearly 30,000 youth across central Ohio aren’t in school or working – there’s an obvious disconnect.
To shed light on potential employment paths, we talked to individuals like Dashawn. Each episode of Rivet looks at personal stories of getting to work, outside of the perceived “conventional” four-year degree
route. It’s exciting, following individuals as they work their first gigs, gain two-year degrees, enroll in apprenticeship programs, and earn certificates. This project is about the value and integrity that comes with finding gainful employment, but also the barriers many face to finding jobs they enjoy. Seven different stories came together in a first season profiling manufacturing technicians, electricians, and IT specialists. Each teaches us something about getting into work and doing so outside of what is perceived as the more traditional college path.
Collecting these stories has proven an inspiring process for me. Depending on the person, this quest concerns more than just work – it’s about passion, integrity, and sometimes, survival.
– Leticia Wiggins, Ph.D. WOSU Multimedia Producer American Graduate Initiative

Sunday Afternoon – A Time For Innovation on 89.7 NPR NewsAll of the programs on 89.7 NPR News have a simple goal – to inform and inspire you. There is no better time to be informed and inspired than Sunday afternoons on 89.7 NPR News. Each week, WOSU airs shows that break down complicated topics and introduce listeners to the most innovative entrepreneurs of our day.
All programs are subject to change. 13
Planet MoneyPlanet Money kicks off our “innovation block” Sunday afternoons at 2:00. Like its regular segment on Morning Edition, Planet Money explains the economy with playful storytelling and award-winning deep dive, roll up your sleeves journalism. Planet Money journalists find creative ways to make sense of complicated issues. The team has traced the supply chain of a t-shirt from the cotton field, to the factory to the store. Producers bought 100 barrels of crude oil and followed it from the ground to gas tank. Making economics exciting, that’s Planet Money.
How I Built This Next is How I Built This, where innovators, entrepreneurs, and idealists take us through the often challenging journeys they took to build their now iconic companies. Host Guy Raz has quizzed guests like the founders of Lyft, Patagonia, Zappos, Spanx, Samuel Adams, Instagram, and Central Ohio’s own, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream. In each conversation, Guy coaxes stories and reflections from guests that don't appear in their company bios – or anywhere else. These stories resonate strongly with anyone who has ever tried to build anything meaningful from scratch.
Whether you are a budding entrepreneur or just plain curious, Sunday afternoons on 89.7 NPR News are the place for informed inspiration.
Freakonomics Radio Freakonomics Radio (Sundays at 3:00) ferrets out connections between seemingly unrelated things. The program explores the riddles of everyday life and the weird wrinkles of human nature—from cheating and crime to parenting and sports—using the tools of economics to explore real-world behavior. Host Stephen J. Dubner discovers the hidden side of everything in interviews with Nobel laureates and provocateurs, social scientists and entrepreneurs— and with his “Freakonomics” co-author Steve Levitt.

March is Women’s History MonthSunday, March 3 at 7pm
More women became professional composers during the last century than ever before, but their music is still performed much less frequently than music by men. On March 3, host Jennifer Hambrick brings you Settling the Score: Music by Women Composers. This one-hour special celebrates contributions of women composers from the Middle Ages through present day. You’ll experience evocative music by the 12th-century mystic Hildegard of Bingen, a moving chamber work by French composer Nadia Boulanger, and a shimmering Harp Concertino by Germaine Tailleferre, the only woman in the group of French modernists known as Les Six. There’s also more recent music by American composer and flutist Valerie Coleman, a founding member of the world-renowned Imani Winds.
The American SoundSaturdays at 6pm and Tuesdays at 7pm
The American Sound also celebrates Women’s History Month with a rich selection of music by American women composers. Bask in Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon’s gorgeous fantasy on Amazing Grace. Also enjoy a song inspired by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg from the cycle The Long View by Ginsburg’s daughter-in-law, Patrice Michaels and Christina Courtin’s fun and whimsical Tralala performed by the fabulous Brooklyn Rider. Hear Jeff Midkiff’s Quintet No. 1 for mandolin and strings in an award-winning performance featuring Midkiff on mandolin with the Carpe Diem String Quartet and also the early music ensemble Hesperus with early American dance music.
Symphony ShowcaseThursdays at 7pm
The 20th century was an incredibly rich time for English music. All this month, host Kent Teeters explores symphonic repertoire from the late 19th and 20th centuries by some of England’s most influential composers – Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Stanford, Harty and Walton.
Sunday BaroqueSundays from 6am - 10am
Johann Sebastian Bach was born in March of 1685. On March 24, you can enjoy Sunday Baroque’s annual Bach Birthday Bash. Be listening Sunday mornings from 6-10.
Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlinWeeknights at 6pm
Bill McGlaughlin admits that, even though he's spent much of his career performing music from the 18th century and later, he often finds that music from the Renaissance takes his breath away. McGlaughlin explores music from Renaissance composers in France, Spain, Germany and England during the week of March 4.
During the week of March 11, it’s “Clash of the Titans.” Bill explores the lives and music-making of two great conductors, Leopold Stokowski and Arturo Toscanini.
