Smart, but DifferentHigh quality, engaging Honors academics help you develop and practice the skills necessary to succeed at your four-year transfer school and build a foundation for career success.

Honors classes are designed for critical thinking—not critical mass. When it comes to developing analytical, collaborative, and problem- solving skills, bigger is not better. American Honors classes at Kilgore College are small, seminar-format courses designed to foster thoughtful, intellectual interaction among like-minded peers—who are just as interested in asking the right questions as they are in finding the right answers. Each class is led by an Honors professor whose focus is to educate, challenge, and engage.

Meet Our StudentsWhile American Honors students come from diverse backgrounds, they all share a common ambition: to earn their bachelor’s degree from a great four-year school, for less. Here are a few examples of student success stories from across the national American Honors network.

Alex M. Transferred to Texas Woman’s University in Fall 2015

Alex knew she could get into a 4-year college right out of high school, but she also knew she couldn’t pay for it. Still, she was reluctant to go to a 2-year school because of the

stigma against them. But once she enrolled in courses, she found something surprising with American Honors: a tight-

knit community within the larger setting of the college. That’s where she found additional opportunities, support, and inspiration. Now she’s studying at Texas Woman’s University. Looking back, she reflects that starting in American Honors was “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Nathan Transferred to University of Michigan in Fall 2015

Nathan knew that if he wanted to excel at a top science school, he’d need more than a collection of transfer credits.

So, he worked with his Honors advisor to research summer internships. He landed a 10-week paid internship at a

biomedical research lab, where he had the chance to do real research and get a sneak peek into graduate school. Now, he’s studying cellular and molecular biology at the University of Michigan on a full-tuition scholarship.

“I knew that I could get into a four-year school right out of high school, but I wasn’t prepared financially. Starting in American Honors was probably one of the best decisions

I’ve ever made.”

with ambition

Alex S.Transferred to Baylor University in Fall 2015

Alex knew he wanted to go to college since he was seven years old. What he didn’t know was what he wanted to focus on there. His American Honors advisor helped him figure out the entire transfer process—from picking a school to completing the application—and now Alex knows his next steps. After finding his focus, Alex transferred to Baylor University, where he’s pursuing a degree in electrical engineering as a ROTC student.

London Transferred to University of Pennsylvania in Fall 2015

London was always an overachiever. She took tough classes, earned a high GPA, and graduated high school early. She enrolled in community college looking to excel. She joined the Honors program, took a leadership position on the American Honors Council, did well in her Honors classes, and worked with her Honors advisor to apply for over 100 scholarships. London was accepted to many of her top choice transfer schools, and chose to enroll at University of Pennsylvania. Getting into a highly competitive school was a great success, but now she needed to figure how to pay for it. Everything fell into place when she was awarded the “holy grail” of transfer scholarships—the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship.

Yousif Transferred to University of Texas at Tyler in Fall 2015

As one of seven siblings, Yousif sometimes felt lost in the shuffle. But he always knew college was his future—his family came from Sudan to find a better life, and he knew that earning a degree was the way to do it. At the end of high school, Yousif realized he wasn’t ready to go directly to a 4-year college. He joined American Honors and found the support he needed to clarify his goals and achieve his dreams. After he finishes his degree from University of Texas at Tyler, Yousif hopes to apply it by bringing a better life to people in Sudan.

Earn credits that countHonors credits are designed to transfer, which means you’re less likely to waste extra time—and money—retaking classes at your transfer school. American Honors instructional designers spend over 1,000 hours each year helping faculty create honors-level courses.

Lower your overall tuitionReduce the total amount you spend on your bachelor’s degree by earning half your credits at Kilgore College. That’s college math that really adds up. American Honors students can save up to 40% on the overall cost of tuition while earning their bachelor’s degree.2

Get through in twoStarting at a two-year college is the most affordable when you graduate on time. Each extra year in college means an extra year of tuition. American Honors students are over 3 times more likely than other students to graduate from community college in 2 years.13x
