History of Father’s Day in the United StatesThere appear to be two common stories of how Father’s Day originated. A
woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoringand celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at churchin 1909.
Sonora’s dad, William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widowerwhen his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the sixchildren by himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her appreciationfor all the hard work and love William gave to her and her siblings, Sonorathought there should be a day to honor him and other dads like him. She initiallysuggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father’s death, to be the designatedday to celebrate Father’s Day, but due to some bad planning, the celebration inSpokane, Washington, was deferred to the third Sunday in June.

A Season of BeautyA star fell from the sky
Right into my open armsI held it close to my heart
It had such awesome charmsA yellow flower bloomed
Right before my eyesIts’ beauty caught my breathWhat a magnificent surpriseI watched the fading moon
Right before the dawn of dayThe stars were twinkling softly
On that early morn in MayThe wind was softly blowingAs the leaves all waved helloA rainbow formed in the skyIt shined forth to all below
What a beautiful time of yearA new beginning for one and all
A season of beauty and loveAs God’s gifts grow strong and TallAnd we thank the Lord every day!

The History of Father’s Day in the United States Cont. The other story of the first Father’s Day in America took place in West Virginia
on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the localMethodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mineexplosion killed 361 men.
While Father’s Day was celebrated locally in several communities across thecountry, unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday beganalmost immediately. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended thatFather’s Day become a national holiday, but no official action was taken.
In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the thirdSunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’tuntil 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father’s Day was officiallyrecognized as a national holiday.
