PRAYER REQUESTS Let us remember those who are ill: George Fabiano and Rodolfo Ibanze.

Let us remember the those who recently died.

Let us remember in our prayers all of our men and women serving in the military.

    SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE

This weekend is the 39th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision. This decision legalized abortion on demand in the USA. On Monday at least 250,000 pro-lifers will descend on Washington, DC and another group in Trenton to Stand Up for Life. As Catholics we believe strongly that all human life is a divine gift, surpassing in value all other blessings given us by God.

That belief encourages Catholics and adherents of other faiths to dedicate themselves to the preservation of life, from conception to natural death. Because of this belief we educate others and participate in a unified way to promote an end to the killing of unborn children and the protection of the sick, handicapped, and elderly.

We are all called to see that no other violation of God's law cries out more passionately for His intervention than stopping abortion and the destruction of all innocent life. At the same time we deal with unplanned pregnancies with compassion and caring.

On January 22, we remember the 52 million American unborn infants whose lives have been ended. Let us pray for an end to abortion in the USA and throughout the world. Let us consider being part of the solution by joining a Respect Life group or volunteering at a Pregnancy Center.

SAINT JOSEPH PARISH PARTICIPATING IN THE

March for Life WASHINGTON DC MONDAY, JANUARY 23

Each year in January hundreds of thousands of people gather in our nation's capitol for the Annual March for Life to proclaim their respect for God's gift of human life.

Under the direction of Father Roy, a group of parishioners will be participating in the march tomorrow, Monday, January 23. Upon arriving in Washington, the day begins with a Mass at 11 am at the Basilica of Immaculate Conception.

Please keep those participating in the March for Life in your prayers. May they be blessed with a safe journey and may their presence bring a powerful message to protect the sanctity of life, at all stages, as a gift of God.

3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 22, 2012

At the parish wide meeting of January 9, 2012 an Executive Summary of our parish strategic plan, Forward in Faith 2016, was made available to all present. The Executive Summary is being published as a series of bulletin articles so

that will it readily available to all interested. This is the First of that series

Executive Summary- Forward in Faith 2016 Please note- Items marked with a indicate top priority that will be worked on during 2012.

    I. WORSHIP – Celebrating as a Faith Community

A vibrant parish sees Eucharistic liturgy as the point to which all else leads and from which everything flows.

Resources are devoted as necessary to ensure liturgies are alive and life-giving.

    1. Continue to create an environment of welcoming, reverence and holiness, thanksgiving and praise to our Lord at each Eucharistic liturgy. Review the current Mass schedule. Enhance the hospitality/welcome ministry with hospitality ministers. Develop a Prayer and Worship Committee. Provide resources for the orientation, education/formation of liturgical ministers. Develop an active formation program explaining the Mass and liturgical seasons.

    2. Celebrate liturgies that unite and enrich us as a parish community, while embracing the unique needs, backgrounds and various ages of our members. Children will participate in Sunday Children’s Liturgy of the Word. Research youth liturgical celebrations at other parishes. Invite children from religious education and our school to join the children’s choir, altar servers, etc.

Schedule a weekly Mass focused on youth of the parish.

Embrace key traditions/devotions reflecting parish diversity.

    3. Enrich the vibrancy of our Eucharistic liturgies and other celebrations that enhance devotion and invite joyful participation. Continue to expand parish’s liturgical music program. Educate parishioners on the role of liturgical music. Expand the types of choirs to lead music at Masses. Periodically assess liturgies, homilies, sacramental preparation and prayer/devotions.

    PASTOR’S COLUMN

THE SERIES BEGINS In my last column I wrote about the parish meeting of January 9 at which the Implementation Committee presented our parish strategic plan, Forward in Faith 2016. Beginning with this bulletin we will begin to publish the Executive Summary of

the plan. This summary will let you know the various things that we as a parish will be working on in the years to come.

The Implementation Committee (whose members include: Dennis Maloney (Chairperson), Gerard Maron, Daniel O’Toole, Carol Winkler, Jo Anne Kehoe, Colette Vail, Heath Winborn, Cathleen Walsh, Erick Valdes, Sue McKee, Phil DeRosa, and me) will be inviting the various committees, groups, ministries, organizations, and all members of the parish to help to make the plans we set for ourselves a reality. In a very real sense Forward in Faith has just begun! Love, Father Tom Iwanowski PS Be sure to read the good news at the top right!

NEWS FROM THE PARISH FINANCE COUNCIL The Finance Council is happy to announce that our 2011 Christmas Collection came to $90,383. We are most grateful for this generous response which was more than $3,000 above the amount budgeted and some $4,000 higher than last year’s collection. This is a truly gratifying response in light of the present economic situation. Thank you!

ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

TARGET NEWS TARGET will meet today, Sunday, January 22. Hang Out Night on Thursdays from 7 to 9 pm in the TARGET Room in the Rectory/Parish Office Basement.

The Good News for Little Ones program is of-fered for children 6 months through 4 years of age. It provides a safe and comfortable place for children while their parents attend our 9 am or 10:30 am Sunday Mass. Good News for

Little Ones is located in the greenhouse classroom in the Saint Joseph Lower School on Elm Street.

MOMS, POPS & TOTS Moms, Pops and Tots program meets every Thursday at 9:30 am in the lower level of the rectory located on Harrison Street across from the church. New members are welcome. Moms, Pops and Tots is a support and play group for parents and caregivers of preschool-age children. For information, Pat MacRae (201-602-2833).

THIRD SATURDAY PRAYER ON THE FOURTH The Legion of Mary's Third Saturday Prayer which was originally scheduled for January 21 has been postponed. The new date is Saturday, January 28, the fourth Saturday. All parishioners are invited to join the Legion of Mary for this monthly gathering after the 8:30 AM Mass in Mary's Chapel in the Lower Church. After praying the rosary, we will continue our series on the virtues of the Blessed Mother.

The celebration of infant baptism is a joyous occasion for a child’s family and for the Church family. Just as the birth of a child leads parents to reflect on the gift of human life, so the baptism of a child leads parents, and the whole parish, to reflect on this sacrament and what it means to be a part of God’s Church. The primary purpose of our Baptism Program is not so much to prepare parents to celebrate the day when the waters of baptism will be poured over their child, but rather to help parents reflect on the meaning of their own baptism and the Catholic Faith they wish to share with their child. Our baptism program has several components or “gatherings.” These “gatherings” are led by members of our parish who are excited to share their faith and the joys of parenthood with new Moms & Dads.

Those planning to have the child baptized at our parish, should contact Anne Annunziato at the parish office before the fifth month of pregnancy for more information, (201-261-0148) or ([email protected])

NOTE: The Sacrament of Baptism will be celebrated next Sunday, January 29, during our 12 Noon Mass.

    CORNERSTONE REFLECTION by Martin DeBenedetto

For years, with a forced smile I took the Cornerstone Retreat brochure from fellow parishioners standing at

the door of the church. I usually mumbled something about being too busy, and then went home and threw the brochure in the garbage. A few years ago, instead of throw-ing away the brochure, I signed up and experienced Cornerstone – a decision I will always treasure.

The Cornerstone Retreat Weekend gave me time to reflect on what is really important...faith, family and Christian fellowship. Cornerstone

was spiritually enriching, uplifting, and enjoyable, too. And, the regular, optional monthly meetings that fol-lowed provide an opportunity for often much-needed “spiritual refills.”

If, like me, you’ve been politely taking the Cornerstone brochures year after year and throwing them away, please consider experiencing Cornerstone this March. You’ll be glad you did. Martin DeBenedetto Cornerstone XVII

NOTE: The Cornerstone Retreat for Women is March 2 & 3 The Cornerstone Retreat for Men is March 23 & 24

CORNERSTONE JOINT NIGHT OF REFLECTION The Cornerstone Joint Night of Reflection will take place this Wednesday, January 25, at 8:00 PM in Mary’s Chapel in the lower church. All men and women who have made a Cornerstone Retreat are invited to attend. It is a special opportunity to pray and focus ourselves in preparation for the upcoming Cornerstone weekends. Please plan to be there.

GIVING THOUGHT The title of this weekly section in the bulletin is particularly appropriate. It remind us that we need to give thought to the amount we give to our parish in the collection. We need to remember that giving should keep pace with inflation and also keep pace with any increase in salary we have had. Our giving should be done with thought and with love for God and concern for our parish.

ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from

St. Mark Chapter 1 verses 14-20.

After John the Baptist was arrested by King Herod, Jesus began to preach to the crowds and proclaim the Good News. One day, while walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets to catch fish. Jesus called out to them, “Come and follow me and I will make you fishers of people”. The brothers left their nets and followed him. Further along the shore Jesus saw James and his brother John, who were mending nets with their father. Jesus called them too and, at once, they left their father and followed him.

Jesus teaches us to catch others for God. You catch fish by putting food in front of them. You catch people by telling them about God. If we tell them that Jesus loves them and died on the cross for them and if we tell everyone that God wants them to be good, this is how you catch people for God. Tell them that God will give them everything they need. Not everything they want but everything they need.

Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word Committee

NOTE TO PARENTS The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9am Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church/Mary’s Chapel for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue the celebration of the Liturgy with their families. We want God's Good News to be exciting for the younger members of our parish family. You can contact us at ([email protected]).

    NOTE TO KIDS

Be sure to use your special envelopes in the Sunday collection. You can get extra

envelopes during the Liturgy of the Word With Children. Just ask Fr. Tom.

    MISSION OF THE WEEK

Each morning I will pray that more people will follow the ways of Jesus
