Let Freedom SingThis Fourth of July, celebrate both

our nation’s history and the history ofsome favorite patriotic songs:

“America” (“My Country ’Tis ofThee”). This song’s lyrics, set to themelody of “God Save the King,” werewritten by the Rev. Samuel FrancisSmith, who debuted it at anIndependence Day celebration in 1831.It was used as the country’s anthem fordecades until “The Star-SpangledBanner” was given that honor in 1931.

“America the Beautiful.” Accordingto Katharine Lee Bates, an Englishprofessor who wrote the words of thisstirring tune in 1913, the lyrics wereinspired by a prairie wagon ride shetook up Pikes Peak in Colorado, whereshe gazed upon the breathtakingbeauty of the countryside below. Themusic was composed in 1882 bySamuel Augustus Ward, a churchorganist and choirmaster.

“You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Writtenby George M. Cohan for his 1906 stageshow “George Washington Jr.,” thislively march was the first song from amusical to sell more than 1 millioncopies of sheet music.

“Yankee Doodle.” This upbeat dittydates back to pre-Revolutionary Wartimes, when British officers sang it tomock American militiamen. But in trueAmerican style, this parody has beenembraced as a patriotic classic.

Catch the All-Star GameUp to bat in July is Major

League Baseball’s All-StarGame, where top players fromthe National and Americanleagues face off in a competitionthat marks the halfway point ofthe regular season.

The first All-Star Game, held in1933 at Chicago’s old ComiskeyPark, was the idea of a localsports editor. Marketed as the“Game of the Century,” it washeld during the Chicago World’sFair to bolster the sport, whichfaced dwindling crowds due tothe Depression.

Organizers let fans nationwidecast votes for the teams’ rosters, and Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig andCarl Hubbell were among theplayers chosen. The game wassuch a hit that it became anannual tradition.

Today, fans still select thestarters for the MidsummerClassic. Pitchers and backupplayers are voted on by MLBplayers, managers and coaches, with the two All-Star teammanagers rounding outthe roster.

While the contest provides abreak in the season’s action, there is motivation to win: Thechampion league gets home-fieldadvantage in the World Series.
