American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)

For more than 65 years, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and its predecessors, has been the principal society of the aerospace engineer and scientist. Officially formed in 1963 through a merger of the American Rocket Society (ARS) and the Institute of Aerospace Sciences (IAS), the purpose was, and still is, "to advance the arts, sciences, and technology of aeronautics and astronautics, and to promote the professionalism of those engaged in these pursuits.”

Today, with more than 31,000 members, AIAA is the world's largest professional society devoted to the progress of engineering and science in aviation, space, and defense. The Institute continues to be the principal voice, information resource, and publisher for aerospace engineers, scientists, managers, policymakers, students, and educators. Also, many prominent corporations and governments worldwide rely on AIAA as a stimulator of professional accomplishment in all areas related to aerospace.

AIAA Technical Committees

The AIAA Technical Committees develop and administer the technical programs of AIAA. Through the Technical Activities Committee (TAC), its Technical Groups, and its Technical Committees, the Institute conducts 20 to 25 national technical conferences each year. Other principal products of TAC and TC efforts include technology assessment packages for the nontechnical public, handbooks, and technical position papers.

The SOSTC is part of the Technical Activities Committee’s Space and Missiles Group

Space Operations and Support Technical Committee (SOSTC)

• The SOSTC is concerned with all aspects of civil, military and commercial space operations and support– Direct and supporting operations– Systems and software affecting operations– Space operations and operational risk management

• The SOSTC addresses all types of space operations– Manned and unmanned space operations– Low earth-orbiting to deep space systems

• The SOSTC is involved with all phases of mission operations– Pre-launch and launch activities– Early mission commissioning activities– On-orbit, cruise and encounter activities– Post-landing activities– End-of-life operations

SOSTC (continued)

• The SOSTC addresses space related operational support activities– Training– Servicing– Mission planning– Flight dynamics– Telemetry transmission– Command and control– Data handling, processing, analysis, and storage.

• The SOSTC seeks to improve all these aspects of space operations by increasing the exchange of knowledge among those actively engaged in space operations, documenting the results, and making those results available to the broader space systems community.
