I [l'or Hie American Rep rblican.] TUB SMALL POX. Asa reader of your journal, and others of. trie city, 1 have seen that our "City Fathers"; re in the midst of an euterprizci important to) very citizen, and especially interesting to the! philanthropic physician?we allude to the in-! tended Small Pox Hospital about to he erected) on the South sid. of thu Patapsco?where ul- ! is to he established a House of Refuge. We hope we may escape the charge of arro- gance in oileri ug a lew observations on tins sub- act, of which wo have thought mueh, free from affection or disaffection, otherwise than as a vvcil wisher of our city, and whatever ro- tates to her prosperity, but especially us regards ho health of our people. In the great ami well regulated hospitals in the German Status, they have ceased to use i small pox hasp tials, and fearlessly and beneti- lally admit small pox cases to some part oi their common hoqiitals?thev have found that the best way to suppress this disease is to meet boldly, it" the use of proper means. No pa- rent is admitted at any time without careful ex- j animation of thu vaccine marl. ?if there be, doubt, vaccination is employed uistauter, or as soon us the case will admit of it. It is expect- ed that every patient present a certificate of vaccination. Rut if a separate Infirmary must ho adopted to meet a supcrsilion which would uduce a professing Christian to con.s'gri a fcl- ow cieatme to almost certain death by remov- al to pest house, from three to six or seven piles distant, that he may be :lifcrc consigned ' i a by-place ui.-i die unknown?the good gill of God ifa preventative to our race to the con- trary, notwithstanding?all this that the timid need no'. Undisturbed, One in a thousand af- ter proper vact.nation wiil not le liable to va- rioloid, and occasional inscilion of vac- ante initiation will obviate even tnis risk almost Wt admit that ease.- occur whcio p- per:; .Did sir igers nan only b ? provid d for by liav- ig a suitable infirmary, and so tor the in-titn- tiou may be churitabUq but, with our expert* once, we more tiiue doubt whether by concen- trating the infection in a pest house you do not give di.rat ion and extension to the disease in- stead of lessening it?an unseen oye, who docs not know it, will give to cruelty its reward in frustratirig supposed \\ ise schemes. A iiicltio.l lias been t mployeo in this city, same years ago, and found to succeed to admira- tion, viz: rieignborhood vaccination?whom- ever a case of small pox occurred the iin tiled i-! ate neighborhood was vaccinated, aud, as soon as too disease was fully ended, all bedding and j wearing apparel were destroyed by lire. On one occasion there was several introductions of the disease?pet haps seven or eight?and in no instance did tlio disease extend to any one, j and ,ve believe one person in a thousand did not know the small pox was in our city. We Believe that vaccination will certainly securo nine hundred and ninety-nine in the thousand of those who aro property attended to by pby- ticians and parents?both are sometimes remiss in tins duty. It is greatly to be desired, that | public opinion shall require of every physician a certificate of full and perfect vaccination, ] whereby he assuinos a responsibility that should I attach to his reputation?and this should as- sume an exactitude that each physician should '"eel most confidence in his own certificate. No child should be admitted to a public or private schor l who has notsuch a certificate, when such certificates or a proper registry of them is made serious matter of private and public duty, we shall know less of small pox. If our people faithfully practice every possi- ble precaution to remove liability to small pox, we shall find that a wise Providence will here, as *in all other cases, reward us for the prac- ticej of duties of philanthropy?and then will a iicst house, to say the least, be little needed. One word more and we are done?from our ewnobssrvation we know, that the neighborhood ibout to be pelected is very sickly, and small pox patients need often remain at an infirmaiy several weeks?what would become of our lit- tle boys in the House of Refuge. 1 had rather sue them beating upon the bottom of a tin cup, Did enjoy tiiu sport, than consigned toa malari- iv t location of bottom land. The subscribar also takes this opportunity to return his grateful thanks to a discerning public, who have extended to his medicines such a liberal support since their introduction into this city; and he is happy in the belief that they have been productive of inucb good wherever used. As he is the sole proprietor and manufacturer, he would caution the puldic against any attempts that may be made to impose upon them a spurious article. Tile .bailees which take place in tht mucous m< mlirane from inflammation, are n duess, thickun- inj!, sol'ti iiing, sometimes excrescences, ulceration, the mucous glands become Ihickeneil :nd enlarged, tin; submucous cel.ular tissue may heeoine thickened or distended with an effusion of serum or collection of pus. Tims the meanest com prehension may perceive at a glance how easily a stricture may he produced by a gonorrhoea of any continuance. Stricture is a fertile I source of loss of the erectile power, consequently it is a most frequent cause of impotence; thus those who | labor under gonorrhoea for any lengih offline may leaui lite consequences. The most frt queni cause of im potence is Onanism, or Certain Solitary Practices.? This horrible practice checks the developement and changes the structure of the generative organs, creates stricture of the urethra, produces picmaturedebility, it gives pains in the loins; it es ablishesgeneral weak- ness ami induces consumption; the mental faculties escape not, the tuiuil becomes fatuitous, the very senses imperfect in their action, and the whole econo- my of nature becomes perverted. These consequen- ces are gradual; the victim of self-immolation con- tinues in his frightful cuieer with imagined impunity; he litti'' dreams of the sad lot that awaits him; with what terror the frightful truth bursts upon him; unfit to enter into ibe bonds of connubiality. he imagines bis earthly misery consummate, and ina fit of despair commits suicide. That many acts of self-destruction are owing to this cause, there cannot be the least doubt, and no human being is ever aware of the dark truth, hut the unfortunate victims. It would hea work of a supererogation to speak more on this vastly im- ponant subject; suffice it to say, should this adver- | tisenient meet the eye of any one who has been un- fortunate enough to tender himself Impotent, DK. HITZEI.HERGER, Who is well known to the atiiicted, es a Philanthropic : Physician, can restore all his lost energies, re-in< igo- -1 rate his frame and place him in possession of pristine powerand vigor. TUB SMALL POX.

Asa reader ofyour journal, and others of.trie city, 1 have seen that our "City Fathers";re in the midst of an euterprizci important to)

very citizen, and especially interesting to the!philanthropic physician?we allude to the in-!tended Small Pox Hospital about to he erected)on the South sid. of thu Patapsco?where ul-

! is to he established a House of Refuge. We hope we may escape the charge of arro-

gance in oileriug a lew observations on tins sub-act, of which wo have thought mueh, free

from affection or disaffection, otherwise thanas a vvcil wisher of our city, and whatever ro-

tates to her prosperity, but especially us regardsho health of our people.

In the great ami well regulated hospitals in

the German Status, they have ceased to use ismall pox hasp tials, and fearlessly and beneti-lally admit small pox cases to some part oi

their common hoqiitals?thev have found thatthe best way to suppress this disease is to meet

boldly, it" the use of proper means. No pa-rent is admitted at any time without careful ex- janimation of thu vaccine marl. ?if there be,doubt, vaccination is employed uistauter, or assoon us the case will admit of it. It is expect-ed that every patient present a certificate ofvaccination. Rut if a separate Infirmary must

ho adopted to meet a supcrsilion which woulduduce a professing Christian to con.s'gri a fcl-ow cieatme to almost certain death by remov-

al to pest house, from three to six or sevenpiles distant, that he may be :lifcrc consigned

Undisturbed, One in a thousand af-ter proper vact.nation wiil not le liable to va-rioloid, and occasional inscilion of vac-ante initiation will obviate even tnis risk almost

stead of lessening it?an unseen oye, who docsnot know it, will give to cruelty its reward infrustratirig supposed \\ ise schemes.

A iiicltio.l lias been t mployeo in this city, same years ago, and found to succeed to admira-tion, viz: rieignborhood vaccination?whom-ever a case of small pox occurred the iin tiled i-!ate neighborhood was vaccinated, aud, as soonas too disease was fully ended, all bedding and jwearing apparel were destroyed by lire. Onone occasion there was several introductions ofthe disease?pet haps seven or eight?and in

no instance did tlio disease extend to any one, jand ,ve believe one person in a thousand didnot know the small pox was in our city. WeBelieve that vaccination will certainly securo

nine hundred and ninety-nine in the thousandof those who aro property attended to by pby-ticians and parents?both are sometimes remissin tins duty. It is greatly to be desired, that |public opinion shall require of every physiciana certificate of full and perfect vaccination, ]whereby he assuinos a responsibility that should Iattach to his reputation?and this should as-sume an exactitude that each physician should'"eel most confidence in his own certificate. Nochild should be admitted to a public or privateschor l who has notsuch a certificate, when suchcertificates or a proper registry of them is madeserious matter of private and public duty, weshall know less of small pox.

Ifour people faithfully practice every possi-ble precaution to remove liability to small pox,we shall find that a wise Providence will here,as *in all other cases, reward us for the prac-ticej of duties of philanthropy?and then willa iicst house, to say the least, be little needed.

One word more and we are done?from ourewnobssrvation we know, that the neighborhoodibout to be pelected is very sickly, and smallpox patients need often remain at an infirmaiyseveral weeks?what would become of our lit-tle boys in the House of Refuge. 1 had rathersue them beating upon the bottom of a tin cup,Did enjoy tiiu sport, than consigned toa malari-iv t location ofbottom land. In addition to themany certificates published in the papers of the day,he tins in his possession a number from most respecta-ble individuals, all testifying to the virtues of thesemedicines, and which can be seen at his store.

The subscribar also takes this opportunity to returnhis grateful thanks to a discerning public, who haveextended to his medicines such a liberal support sincetheir introduction into this city; and he is happy inthe belief that they have been productive of inucbgood wherever used. Tims the meanest com prehension may perceive ata glance how easily a stricture may he produced by agonorrhoea of any continuance. Stricture is a fertile

I source of loss of the erectile power, consequently it isa most frequent cause of impotence; thus those who

| labor under gonorrhoea for any lengih offline may leauilite consequences. The most frt queni cause of impotence is Onanism, or Certain Solitary Practices.?This horrible practice checks the developement andchanges the structure of the generative organs, creates

stricture of the urethra, produces picmaturedebility,it gives pains in the loins; it es ablishesgeneral weak-ness ami induces consumption; the mental facultiesescape not, the tuiuil becomes fatuitous, the verysenses imperfect in their action, and the whole econo-my of nature becomes perverted. These consequen-ces are gradual; the victim of self-immolation con-tinues in his frightful cuieer with imagined impunity;he litti'' dreams of the sad lot that awaits him; withwhat terror the frightful truth bursts upon him; unfitto enter into ibe bonds of connubiality. he imaginesbis earthly misery consummate, and ina fit of despaircommits suicide. That many acts of self-destructionare owing to this cause, there cannot be the leastdoubt, and no human being is ever aware of the darktruth, hut the unfortunate victims. It would hea workof a supererogation to speak more on this vastly im-ponant subject; suffice it to say, should this adver-
