Da Big Raffle

RAFFLE NEWS

This is really a big raffle item. Beginning at

the March meeting raffle tickets will be

available for an Excalibur 21" scroll

saw. This is a top of the line scrollsawer's

scroll saw. I speak from experience since I

have owned one for several years and spend

about 75% of my woodworking time on this

scroll saw. Thanks to Lee Nye you will see

photos, a description and a list of its fea-

tures at the meeting. This saw comes with a

stand and a power foot pedal for a cost of

over $900. You have the chance to own one

for $5 (0ne ticket) or $10 (3 tickets). See Bill

Knudsen, Ed Schalk or Gail Madden to pur-

chase tickets.

Start the New Year Safely

We plan to publish monthly shop safety articles in this newsletter beginning this month.

While it is possible to do yourself harm with almost any shop tool, we will be emphasizing

power equipment safety. If any of you would like to contribute a safety article or even a safe-

ty tip, please contact Al John, he is our coordinator for safety. Al is our FVWWC member at

large and his email address is [email protected] or just look him up at the March

meeting .

Well the library has hit two new milestones this month. We now have over 700 books and 300 DVDs

and CDs. We may not have EVERY aspect of woodworking covered, but we have the vast majority

of them. And we have some new additions that are quite interesting.

First, although it hasn’t been mentioned lately, SketchUp is still alive and well. The current free ver-

sion is browser based, but you can still find older versions that run on your machine. We now have a

second training program for those older versions. We have a disk of SketchUp tutorials downloaded

from the Internet, as well as a 4-disk beginner class and a 2-disk intermediate class published by

American Woodworker. Add to that a 2-disk SketchUp for Woodworkers class from Popular Wood-

working that has just been donated to the library. If you want to learn the basics of this design pro-

gram, the library is here to help you.

For the Neanderthals in our group, we have 18 excellent books on hand tools in the library. But we

have just added three massive tomes by Graham Blackburn, The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Wood-

working Handtools, Traditional Woodworking Handtools, and Traditional Woodworking Techniques.

These are not only beautiful and informative books, but each one has been signed by the author.

Suffice it to say that the retail cost of these three books is more than the entire library budget for

2020. So if you check them out, please take good care of them.

Saturday, 11 April 2020 – What We Make

Algonquin, IL

A family operated handmade furniture manufacturer using reclaimed materials.

Look for details of the tour in the April 2020 FVWWC Newsletter.

Saturday, 09 May 2020 – Al John’s Shop – Sycamore, IL

We are looking for additional hosts for 2020. Regardless of the size of your shop we are very much interested in visiting your workspace. The value of Shop Tours is the networking among fellow woodworkers which is a great experience - everyone who attends goes away just a little more knowl-edgeable than when they came.

President’s Sawdust

Tom Sharp, President FVWWC The editorial musings of your president which maybe serious, funny, technical, or philosophical, but hopefully

always entertaining.

Tool Companies

Today’s line up of tools are confusing. The confusion lies in what companies have been grouped together

under a parent company. Plus, tool brands are still being bought, sold, and switched back and forth. The

diagram below shows the current status for the various tool brands on the market.

Conspicuously absent is Skil. I believe them to be an independent company now with a subsidiary of Skil-

saw. Along with them Panasonic, Grizzly, and Festool tools are missing as well.

I was discussing Bosch tools with a friend at lunch that still works with the company. He told me there ’s a

rumor going around that Bosch may dissolve the distributorship in the U.S. That’s a truly remarkable

thought. It does indicate the difficulty of not having your tools in the big box stores. My friend also said it

was more about the lack of innovation and coming out with something to be excited about, both for the

seller and the buyer.

President’s Sawdust (Cont’d)

Only Hilti and Makita are wholly independent companies that are not subsidiaries of another larger corpora-

tion. Their sales have been steady over the last ten years.

Overall competition remains keen between the different brands. Despite the hype and marketing, there

really isn’t too much difference between a cordless 18 –20volt brushless motor drill driver. For cordless

tools, loyalty lies along which type of battery you already have.

I’m sure there will always be changes. Hopefully, the competition will cause the continuance of developing

new and better tools. After all, I’m still waiting for the marketing of a jigsaw that will follow the pencil line

automatically. I worked with a Bosch prototype that did just that marvelously. Bosch decided there wasn’t

a strong need for such a tool. I think decisions like that may be the reason they are not doing well.

Hand Tool SIG

March 3, 2020

The Hand Tool SIG meets, January through November, at 6:30 pm, before the regular meeting at Bethany Lutheran in Room M111 of the Ministry Center (Church annex). The Hand Tool SIG members will be bringing in some of their favorite vintage and exotic tools and weave tales of a bygone age. Well, maybe just pass them around...

Scroll Saw SIG March 3, 2020 The next Scroll Saw SIG meeting will be Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at 6:30 pri-or to the club meeting. This month we will be looking at fonts, particularly stencil fonts for use in word art and signs. We will also look at creating stencil fonts from the “perfect” font that you just can’t scroll because parts of the let-ters drop out. If you are interested learning how to use the scroll saw you have, this group is an excellent resource for expanding your knowledge and picking up tips and patterns. Don’t forget to bring in some samples of your work for discussion. Dave Dockstader
