    Greenbrier, TN~ 9,289,215. What is

this number you ask. No, its not the num-

ber of pages in the latest bill to make its

way through Congress. It is the number of

people that visit The Great Smoky Moun-

tain National Park, the most popular na-

    tional park in the country.

Why do so many people love going to this

part of the state year after year? Maybe its

the trees, the mountain atmosphere, the

streams and the overall serenity. I know alot of folks who have visited this park and

other areas in the eastern portion of our

beautiful state returning with the same

    t h o u g h t ; I

    would love to

    live in a place

    place like that.

    On Saturday

    July 25th

    F r a n k

    Hemphill ofHemphill &

    Moore Realty

    & Auction

    served up a

    slice of state

    park like at-

    mosphere.

The property being sole at Absolute Auc-

tion was a 19 acre, tree studded, park like

setting which included a house and a mo-

bile home that could be used as a guest

    house. A 46 x 78 metal barn/shop build-

ing also stood on the property.

The property was offered in 4 tracts then

re-gouped for a final offering. In the final

round of bidding the property was sold for

$201,000. The Hemphill & Moore Auc-

tion team did a fantastic job as the sale

went smoothly and quickly while making

sure that the best price was realized for the

    seller.

We are quickly moving toward fall and

the most productive time of the year for

    auctions. Keep reading Americas Auction

Report and we will keep bringing you the

auctions you love to attend and all in your

    area.

    See you at the Auction

The driveway leading to the main

house was like driving through a statepark

    Auctioneer Jay Heav-

    ener helped call bids on

    this very hot and humid

    morning

No park setting is complete without a

nice creek running through it. This one

cut through the middle of the property

Auctioneer Frank Hemphill starts the bidding on this beautiful property in Green-brier. Wooded, with a running stream, this property offered a large modern barn

and two houses. Frank is assisted by Office manager, Marianne Wilburn.

    The National Auctioneer s Association

(NAA) celebrated its 60th Anniversary this

year and held its annual Conference and

    Show in Kansas

    City, Kansas,

    headquarters forthe NAA. There

    were attendees

    from across the

    country and

    some interna-

    tional as well.

    From the Inter-

    national Auc-

    t i o n e e r s

    Championship

to the NAA Hall of Fame, Tennessees

    Auctioneers took home the gold!

The winning streak began when J.J. Dower

of Ayers Auction & Realty in Lafollette,

and NAA Board Member. J.J. won this

    years Golf Championship, which was

held at Deer Creeks 18-hole champi-

onship course. J.J .s daughter, Alissa, was

the recipient of one of the scholarships

awarded by the NAA Auxiliary. Alissa

plans on attending Lipscomb University in

Nashville in the Fall. We hear the females

in his life are a driving force behind his

successful career. J.J.s wife Traci Ayers-Dower, another strong female in J.J.s life,

is one of three Certified Auctioneers Insti-

tute (CAI) class advisors who all happen

to be from Tennessee this year...a CAI

first! David Hudgins of United Country

Auctions in Centerville and Terri Walker

of Walker Auctions in Memphis are also

    CAI class advisors.

The NAA inducted three new members

into its Hall of Fame. This is the most pres-

tigious honor bestowed on an Auctioneer.

One of the new inductees was Tennesseesown Marvin Alexander, CAI, of Alexan-

der Auctions & Real Estate in Martin. The

inductees were unaware of their upcoming

honor, which was held during the Presi-

dents Gala on the last evening of the con-

    vention. Marvins wife, LuEllen, knew

ahead of time and was able to surprise

Marvin even more by sneaking family

members to Kansas City the day of the

Presidents Gala. Marvin had no idea his

family was there until the actual an-

nouncement of his induction at the Gala.Family members present were Marvin and

LuEllens sons Chet and Mark, brother,

    Wendell and sister, Barbara Smith.

    Marvin Alexander currently serves as

    Chairman of the Tennessee Auctioneer

Commission. In 1989, Marvin won the

    International Auctioneer Championship

(IAC) competition and the 1997 All

    Round World Championship Auctioneer-

    ing Competition in Canada.

Terri Walker, CAI, BAS, CES, of Walker

Auctions in Memphis, took home the cov-

    eted International Auctioneers Associa-

    tion (IAC) Champion, Womens Division.

The walls of Walker Auctions are adorned

    with three 2nd runner-up and three 1st

    runner-up IAC Women's Division tro-

phies. Terri has now earned the center-

    piece to her collection!

Terri is a second generation Auctioneer.

She is one of the Benefit Auctioneers Spe-

cialist (BAS) instructors, serves on the

NAA Auxiliary Board as a trustee, and

one of the three class advisors from Ten-

nessee for the CAI program. Her husband

of 32 years, Lance, just completed his

term on the NAA Board of Directors, and

they have three children Conner, Eric and

    Caroline.

Will McLemore, CAI, of McLemore Auc-

tion Company, LLC in Nashville, co-led a

seminar entitled "Auctions Without BidCalling". Many auctioneers from across

the country interested in online only auc-

tions attended the seminar where Will

shared information he has gathered from

    his experiences selling personal property

    at auction online since 2006.

Patti Baldini, CAI, CES, of McLemore

Auction Company, LLC in Nashville co-

    emceed the International Ringmans Com-

petition where 15 contestants vied for the

    title of International Ringman Champion.

Susan Hinson of Hinson Auction & RealEstate in Jackson, currently serves as co-

chair for the NAA Auxiliary and will be

Chairman of the Auxiliary next year. The

NAA Auxiliary is an association, which

lends support to auctioneers and their sup-

port staff. They also award several schol-

    arships annually to children and

grandchildren of NAA members to further

    their education.

Susan spearheaded an effort on behalf of

all Tennessee Auctioneers to buy an NAA

Commemorative Bid Paddle, number 36,for Jasper Jones of Memphis, who was un-

able to attend this years convention.

Jaspers Tennessee license number is 36.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A small pis-

tol belonging to 1930s gangster John

Dillinger has been sold at auction to a pri-

vate collector for $95,600 -- more than

double the pre-sale estimate, the auction

    house said on Sunday.

The Remington .41 caliber Double Der-

ringer was said to have been found hidden

in one of Dillinger's socks when he was

arrested in Tucson, Arizona in January

1934, said Dennis Lowe of Heritage Auc-

    tion Galleries in Dallas.

According to affidavits, the pistol was

given by the then Tucson sheriff to a pro-bation officer and kept in the family until

    selling it in 1959.

The owner, who wished to remain anony-

mous, sold it because he was in declining

health, Lowe said. It had been expected to

fetch about $35,000 - $45,000 at the auc-

tion on Saturday in Dallas. A private Los

Angeles collector made the winning bid

    of $95,600.

Dillinger, one of the most infamous bank

robbers in the United States in the early

1930s, was shot dead by FBI agents in

Chicago in July 1934 at the age of 31.

    History of Space Exploration Auction

    Results

On July 16th space buffs around the world

were tuned in to Bonhams New Yorks

first ever Space Sale. Celebrating the 40th

Anniversary of mans first steps on the

Moon, the sale consisted of nearly 400 lots

of objects and documents pertaining to the

    history of Space Exploration.

Without a doubt the most coveted item of

the event was the Apollo 11 Lunar Surface

star chart used to take celestial measure-

ments on the surface of the moon immedi-ately after the Eagles landing. Used by

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the part-

ner star chart made just prior to their de-

parture from the Moon is currently on

display at the Smithsonians National Air

& Space Museum. Of great historical im-

portance, the lot sparked a long round of

furious bidding- resulting in the lot soar-

ing past its estimate of $70/90,000 with a

    final price of $218,000.

Also causing a great amount of auction ex-

citement was an official Apollo 11 crew

emblem (pictured, left) originally from as-

    tronaut Michael Collins collection. Silk

    screened onto non-flammable Beta cloth,

the lot is one the few items carried on the

Apollo 11 mission that was later signed by

    Neil Armstrong. With its extraordinarily

rare Armstrong signature and its visually

powerful tie to the Apollo 11 mission, the

piece inspired fierce bidding. As the gavel

fell, the emblem brought $61,000- well

above than its estimate of $25/35,000.

Other Apollo 11 lots that proved irre-

sistible to bidders were a flown set of

sheets used to align the Eagles naviga-

    tional equipment, which brought $33,550

against an estimate of $15/20,000, and two

flight plan sheets which each brought

    $27,450 against estimates of $15/20,000.

However, it was clear that auction-goers

were interested in much more than just

    Apollo 11. A model of a Saturn V rocket

from the collection of Dr. Maxime Faget

drew much bidder interest. Adding to the

models appeal was a 1966 black and

white photograph of Dr. Faget with this

model while discussing aspects of a lunar

mission with visiting foreign dignitaries.Carrying an estimate of $10/15,000, the lot

    well surpassed expectations bringing

    $27,450.

Also from Dr. Fagets collection was one

of the earliest constructed scale models of

the Mercury spacecraft and an early Space

Shuttle model. Both outperformed with the

Mercury model fetching $21, 960 against

an estimated $10/15,000 and the Space

Shuttle model bringing $22,800 against an

    estimate of $7/9,000.

Apollo 13 devotees were also given ex-

    ceptional collecting opportunities. A con-

    tingency checklist sheet providing critical

steps for rapid activation of the Lunar

    Module during the missions emergency

conditions was on offer. Bearing several

notes from astronauts Fred Haise and John

Lovell, the lot sparked no less than a bid-

ding war fetching $27,000 against an esti-

mate of $3,500/4,500 more than six

times its top estimate. Additionally, Fred

Haises standard-issue, military sunglasseswith a Beta cloth case were presented. Ex-

pected to fetch $3/4,000, this lot also dra-

    matically outperformed bringing a final

    price of $18,000.

    Early American portraits of the

mercantile elite at WinterthurWritten by RANDALL CHASE, Associated Press

    Writer

WINTERTHUR, Del. (AP) - Among the rolling hills

of Delaware's "Chateau Country," a group of guests

from Manhattan is being welcomed with open arms

    at the Winterthur Museum.

The exhibition titled Faces of a New Nation: Ameri-

can Portraits of the 18th and Early 19th Centuries

from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, opens Satur-

day, July 25, at Winterthur. The collection of 39

paintings will remain on display through Jan. 24,

    2010.

The exhibit showcases portraits by some of the most

famous artists of the era, including John Singleton

Copley, Gilbert Stuart and Charles Willson Peale.

Winterthur is the sole venue for the paintings, which

had to be moved to m ake way for renovations to the

Metropolitan's American Wing, a multiyear con-

struction project scheduled for completion in 2011.

Rather than put the paintings in storage with other

works, officials at the Met decided to send them to

Winterthur, which has a long history of collaboration

    with the New York museum.

Morrison Heckscher, chairman of the Met's Ameri-

can Wing, is a member of Winterthur's board of

    trustees.

"We decided to do this for Winterthur, and only then

did other people come calling," said exhibit curator

Carrie Rebora Barratt of the Met's Department of

American Paintings and Sculpture, adding that idea

of adding other venues was rejected.

"It's expensive, it's difficult and it's hard on the paint-

    ings," she explained.

To complement the exhibit, Winterthur officials have

developed a special tour to highlight their museum's

    own collection of American portraits.

Visitors to the exhibit are greeted in bold fashion with

an imposing, life-size portrait from 1789 of Elijah

Boardman, a wealthy Connecticut dry goods mer-

chant by artist Ralph Pearl. While sporting a wry

smile, Boardman appears stiff and severe, showing

off his inventory of fine fabrics and collection of

    leather-bound books.

"In a way, he's kind of the poster boy for the exhibi-

tion," said Rebora Barratt, adding that the subjects

can generally be described as the "mercantile elite"

who helped lay the economic foundation of the nas-

    cent republic.

While most of the subjects commissioned portraits

of themselves and their families, some of the works,

such as Samuel F.B. Morse's melancholy portrait of

his daughter, Susan, were done with exhibitions in

mind. Morse's 1836 portrait, the last he did before

putting down the brush and moving on to develop

the telegraph, shows his daughter staring forlornly

into space, seemingly waiting for a muse to stir the

pencil in her hand into action on the blank page she

    holds.

Without question, the most familiar image in the ex-

hibit is Stuart's 1795 portrait of President George

    Washington, a so-called Vaughn-type portrait simi-

lar to the iconic image on the dollar bill. Stuartswork is displayed next to a portrait of Washington

from the same time period by Swedish artist Adolph

Ulrich Wertmuller. While Stuart offers a naturalistic

image of the aging president, Wertmuller provides a

crisper, more idealized portrait, with finer details.

Lest anyone wonder, Rebora Barratt noted, the first

president of the United States didn't have dandruff.

Those white flecks on his collar in Wertmuller's por-

    trait are hair powder.
