Dear Members and Friends of the Collegium,
The 20th IFOS World congress arranged early June 2013 at Seoul by our dear friend, President Chong
Kim, has met a considerable success with close to 4,500 participants. All those who had the
opportunity to attend the Corlas meeting at Seoul in 2007 still remembered the remarkable social
events that adorned the scientific meeting. Though high their expectation was the wonder at the
2013 opening ceremony was overwhelming. The artistic talents of the Little Angels’ company are
illustrated in two pictures. The harmony in their songs and the elegance of their fans moving like a
ballet were the best response to the threats that had attempted to disrupt the preparation of the
event in the previous months.
I am very grateful to P. Ashley Wackym, Chairman of the Corlas US group, for drawing up an
attractive and scientifically successful Corlas Symposium on Regeneration, Restoration and
Rehabilitation in Otorhinolaryngology. The balance between two fields of our specialty, Otology and
Head and Neck, was exemplary.

Excellent talks were carried out on Clinical Application of Gene Therapy to Restore Inner Ear
Function (Hinrich Staecker, guest, Kansas City, USA), Regeneration in the Inner Ear (Hans
Peter Zenner, Tübingen, Germany), Totally-Implantable Hearing Devices (Maurizio Barbara,
Rome, Italy), Cochlear Implantation in Children: Exploring the Edge of the Envelope (Blake
Papsin, Toronto, Canada), Conflict and Cooperation of Auditory and Visual Information
Processing in Profoundly Deafened Subjects (Yasushi Naito, Kobe, Japan) in the first session.
The second part of the Corlas Symposium, devoted to Head and Neck and chaired by Reidar
Grénman (Turku, Finland), raised also high interest among the audience: Quality of Life in
Head and Neck Cancer: How Should it be Best Used? (C. René Leemans, Amsterdam, the
Netherlands), Personalizing Care for Head and Neck Cancer (Carol Bradford, Ann Arbor,
USA), The Creation of Vascularized Tracheal Transplant (Vincent Vander Poorten, guest,
Leuven, Belgium), Bioactive Glass for Reconstruction in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck
Surgery (Reidar Grénman, Turku, Finland), A Patient Centred Approach to Vocal
Rehabilitation: Prioritising the Merits of Physical Voice Therapy, Psychological Therapy and
Surgery (Janet Wilson, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom).
According to tradition the Corlas Lunch was held after this Corlas Symposium. The fifty-six
participants were greatly indebted to IFOS President Chong Kim for the fine meal and tasty
wines he arranged with Pauline in an appropriate room.
The names of the participants to this Lunch are displayed alphabetically: Matti ANNIKO
(Sweden), Maurizio BARBARA (Italy), Carol BRADFORD (USA), Dale BROWN (Canada),
Charlotte CHIONG (Philippines), Edgar and Juan CHIOSSONE (Venezuela), Yun-Hoon

The Lunch meeting started with the commemoration of those members who passed away:
Eduardo ARSLAN (Padua, Italy, Vice-President of the 2012 Corlas meeting in Rome), Pablo
GIL-LOYZAGA (Madrid, Spain), Bill HOUSE (Oregon, USA), and W.D. KEIDEL (Bayreuth,
Germany).
Then a special event took place, for the first time, in accordance to our new Rules: the
President of the former Corlas Congress, Roberto FILIPO, passed on the Presidency to the
organizer of the forthcoming Congress, Metin ÖNERCI.

The humour of our two successive Presidents, sharing their experience, had an immediate
effect on the attendees (Jay Rubinstein and Steven Juhn in the front of the picture).
This enjoyable atmosphere had already begun before all tables were occupied (Valerie Lund
and Janet Wilson, our two charming ladies from the UK).

Similarly, an irresistible Dutch story having apparently something to do with a cellular phone
gave rise to early cheerfulness among our friends from the Netherlands (Henri Marres, René
Leemans, and Jan Grote).
Between scientific sessions where the most recent advances in the ORL-HNS specialty are
depicted, members enjoy to share agreeable instants prompted by sense of humour and
mutual friendship. This alternation of seriousness and relaxation can be regarded as a
further feature of Corlas spirit.
Pictures of this brief annual report were amiably provided by Chong Kim.
I hope many of you will be able to attend the wonderful meeting that Metin Önerci has
prepared for us in Istanbul, August 24-28, 2014. The deadline for abstract submission (oral
presentations and posters) is Friday, 18 April 2014. More information on the Istanbul
meeting can be found on our renewed website (www.corlas.org) in the construction of
which I owe a lot to our webmaster, Pierre Planté. There you will also find a member area
for which a password is needed. Those of you whom I wasn’t able yet to contact can ask me
this code directly ([email protected]). Access to this area will enable you to
update your individual information and, thus, have at your disposal a more accurate
members’ list. There you can also establish a contact with Prof. Reidar Grénman, our
Treasurer, in order to determine your personal situation and sort out your subscription
dues.
