Dear FrienDs oF the augustinians,

What a joy it is to receive the vows of a young friar! i was honored to preside at the first profession of Brother richie Mercado, o.s.a. on august 12th at st. rita high school shrine Chapel. i will also receive the solemn profession of Brother robert Basler, o.s.a. on october 13th.

These are moments of great hope for the Province, the order and the Church. i am also very pleased to inform you that we now have 11 seminarians for our Province and a total of 33 in the Provinces across the country. Please continue to pray for these men in formation and for more vocations to the augustinians.

This past summer, some of our seminarians helped in the advancement office thanking donors for support and also visiting some of the elders of the Province to get to know them and their history in the order. as a result, we are adding a column in the newsletter called "Living Biographies" which gives a brief summary of these interviews between the seminarians and the elders. You will also see in this article a reflection by one of the seminarians on his pastoral year in our Missions in Peru.

i was also very happy to attend the reunion of former seminarians of st. augustine seminary in holland, Michigan. The energy and enthusiasm around their augustinian heritage was electric. i look forward to more regular meetings of this group. Finally, i hope you will all support the Friends of tolentine Dinner on october 18th. Jack Vlazny will not only be honored as The Man of the Year, but he will also be made an affiliate of the augustinian order! We are grateful for all that Jack has done over the many years to support the augustinians and in particular our seminarians. Congratulations and Welcome to the order Jack!

as we approach the month of november, be assured that i will remember all of our deceased benefactors, friends and members of the order. eternal rest grant unto Them o Lord!

We have so many things for which to be thankful. i am grateful to all of you who continue to support the augustinians. May the Lord bless you and your families during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday!

sincerely in Christ and st. augustine,

D iscernment is all about knowing your own story. as you live your

life day by day, you are actually writing a page or two about your life. We can see in augustine's life, through the Confessions, that he was discerning all throughout his life. he sought to know who he was, what he really wanted, and what his life should be. upon gradually unraveling the truth about himself, he was eventually drawn in seeking to know god. going deeper within himself, augustine found god. after his conversion, augustine prayed, "o god, let me know myself; let me know you." amazingly, in his quest to know god, augustine realized that it wasn't him seeking god. it was actually god seeking augustine. in this call to religious life, we may think that we are the first ones to seek god that's why we are in this kind of life. however, it is god who first sought us, called us, and loved us.

i first met the augustinians during my senior year in high school way back in the Philippines when Fr. Jun saladaga, o.s.a., the vocation director for the Cebu Province, came to our school and gave a

vocation talk. i never knew who the augustinians were and becoming a religious priest was not even something i envisioned for myself. The only reason why i joined the symposium was because we got to be exempted from classes by attending the vocation talk. in the end, however, by the grace of god, i eventually joined the augustinians and that was how i started to know who the augustinians are—how we harmoniously live together as brothers on our way to god.

after 3 years in formation, i left the order to be with my family in Los angeles. i studied at Devry university and became a Cisco network engineer. i was very happy with my life outside religious life for i was blessed with a very supportive family and a great set of friends. however, i felt there was still something missing that kept calling out from deep within. This led me to search for the truth and in my quest to know the truth, i have realized—like augustine—that i have to let the truth (Jesus) find me. god was the first one who

sought me. he was the first one who called me even way before i answered this call to religious life. above all, god was the first one who loved me before i even had a beat in my heart to start loving him.

after 10 years outside religious life, i came back to the order, now with the Midwest Province. i made my first profession of vows on august 12th at the st. rita high school shrine Chapel. i am very grateful to our vocation team led by Fr. tom McCarthy, o.s.a. and sr. ardis Cloutier, o.s.F., who helped me go through the application process smoothly. i would also like to thank our Provincial, Fr. Bernie scianna, o.s.a. he is a leader who is not only for you, but also is with you in your journey. special words of gratitude to the novitiate community in racine, Wisconsin (Jerry Knies, o.s.a., Jack Flynn, o.s.a., Kevin Mullins, o.s.a., henry Maibusch, o.s.a. and robert schurman, o.s.a.) who helped me prepare for my vows and molded me to be a true augustinian. and i would like to thank all my augustinian brothers who made me feel at home right away during my period of transition.

4 The Midwest Augustinian | FALL 2012

Brother Robert Basler, O.S.A. is an Augustinian seminarian studying for the priesthood. In August 2011, he went to Peru to work in our Augustinian mission in Chulucanas for his pastoral year. The pastoral year is part of the formation/education for the priesthood. He felt a strong calling to Hispanic ministry, to perfect his Spanish, and to work with the poor as a missionary. Hence, he felt called by God and drawn to Peru.

My Pastoral Year in Peru

i lived in Chulucanas—a town in northern Peru—where the augustinians have a parish. i

lived in an augustinian community of five friars including myself. at the parish, i worked in many capacities. i was a catechist, put in charge of training the altar-servers, and i was always helping with Masses, i.e., preaching and communion services, among many other things. What i loved the most was doing communion services and preaching in the countryside in the villages that were part of our parish (outside of the town of Chulucanas itself ) among the poorest of the poor. i was very touched by the people’s incredible faith, as well as their hunger for and

openness to the Word of god. The other thing that impressed me was the people’s hospitality and generosity. i learned about generosity from the poorest people i have ever met.

getting to the rural villages was always quite an adventure. in the mountains where we have another parish, we would get to the villages by horse, mule, or donkey, but around Chulucanas--where i was for most of

the year--we would get to the villages by four-wheel-drive or motor bike. There was also always the challenges of dealing with bad weather, especially during the torrential rainy season, compounded by a lack of electricity in many places and inadequate worship spaces: leaky roofs, no roofs at all, no ambos, broken altars, and sand or dirt floors. We almost always dealt with incredibly hot weather,

made worse by long robes and liturgical garb. and if that wasn’t enough fun, we were often dealing with bees, bugs, bats, and a frog and locust plague. it was like a scene out of The Ten Commandments by Cecil B. DeMille.

i learned many things during my pastoral year. one was about how important it is to have a sense of humor when things become chaotic

and there is a lack of resources. i gained a sense of perspective as i realized that everything that we have is a gift and blessing. Perhaps more importantly, i learned that god’s love is present in powerful and unforeseen ways--not because there are nice buildings, air-conditioning, and perfect circumstances, but because of the great love and faith of god’s people.

6 The Midwest Augustinian | FALL 2012

i n tulsa with Deacon David Miller, i interviewed two of our older friars in the Cascia hall Community: Frs. ted tack and John gaffney. i was excited for this interview, since Fr. ted had

been my spiritual director my last two years at the university of tulsa and had heard so much of my story. This was my chance to hear from him. and as it turned out, this was ted’s first occasion to really review his own story in such a fashion. ted occasionally commented that he had never stirred up certain memories in ages; he revealed at least one story for the first time and was reluctant to skip over any of his early years in the order. The story was so comprehensive that only by the end of a full hour did we get to his priestly ordination. obviously this left many, many things untouched, but i felt this experience was as much for him the storyteller as it was for us listening to him.

a number of different points struck me from the interview. ted had expressed to me before that he had always hoped to have one vocation from Cascia hall. i saw the root of that desire when he spoke of his experience relating with some of the augustinians in his own school days. i strongly related to the trials of his pre-novitiate year, especially with respect to the culture shock of being in a different part of the country. Because of the circumstances of his father’s death, ted spent some time with three different novitiate classes, so by the time he showed up to Villanova, he knew basically everyone. i imagine that contributed to his strong advocacy of authentic community life. The stories from rome were interesting. i was surprised that he went so quickly from almost being run out of town as Master of Professed to leading the whole worldwide order as Prior general within a few short years. he still seems awed by that process to this day and sees the spirit’s will being carried out.

7FALL 2012 | The Midwest Augustinian

our interview with Fr. John gaffney got underway much differently. no sooner than introducing ourselves and sitting down, John began his

account in breathless fashion, “My name is John gaffney. i was born in Wolksberry, Pennsylvania in 1919. i went to st. Leo’s Parish...” Fr. gaffney could not tell his early story without John gallagher, a primary school buddy all the way through ordination and beyond. he told us that

since they received very little of augustine in their formation, they learned augustinian

spirituality by their living together. apart from the original account of his vocation, the first half hour explained the “nuts and bolts” of his life, a mere roll call of different ministries and assignments. after completing what he thought we expected of him, he began to put some meat on those bones. he shared with us three of the most meaningful quotes in his life. The first is a quote from rudyard Kipling:

If you can fill the unforgiving minuteWith sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

he spoke to us about what the quote has meant for him and how he tries to use his time even in retirement. he learned a complementary quote from his cousin, a religious sister. “Next to grace, God’s greatest gift is time,” said Cardinal Manning. The other quote he shared with us was posted in the sacristy of a Carmelite convent where he served for some years. it read, “Celebrate this Mass as if it were your only Mass, your first Mass, and your last Mass.” For John, “the Mass is the entire thing.” so these last years not celebrating Mass publicly have been a trial, and the recent weeks of not celebrating Mass at all have been a cross.

i’ve seen John before numerous times, but in the larger group setting, he had a difficult time being prominent in the discussions. This was a wonderful opportunity for me to visit with him at length, and such length!

This past summer, Prior Provincial Fr. Bernard Scianna, O.S.A., Ph.D. assigned our seminarians to visit some of our various communities across the Midwest Province to interview some of our

elder priests and brothers. Doing so allowed them to learn more about our Province's history, as well as about our current parishes and schools. The following is an excerpt of one of our seminarian's reflections on his interviews in Oklahoma.

ANNUAL FUND PROGRESS REPORT

First and foremost we are all about the love of god, our unique augustinian spirituality, and the communities and ministries we serve. These things are what make augustinians “Augustinian.” The money needed to help sustain their works is relevant because of these augustinian values and mission. our 2012-2013 annual fund goal for the augustinians is $850,000. With your prayers and support, we are confident we can reach this goal. Please pray for the 85 augustinians and the 11 seminarians of the Province of our Mother of good Counsel, and resolve to do one or more of the following:

Help us create 1,000 strong who will stand with the augustinians

Become one of the 1,000 who cares enough to sacrifice $1,000 annually (about $3 a day) and be instrumental in securing the future for our seminarians, the augustinians actively working in ministries, and our 29 retired and infirm augustinians. We will need larger gifts but this would be a great boost.

Make a bequest or other planned gift

Make the Mother of good Counsel Province a beneficiary on your insurance policy or retirement plan. You give the gift now and it starts working when you no longer need the asset. a planned gift is also a great way to recognize a beloved augustinian, family member or friend now while you still can.

The Provincial’s Inaugural gala, Friday, april 23, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency, Downtown Chicago

sponsor an augustinian, take a table in the name of your business, parish, or family, or join with other friends and couples and create your own table. use this unique opportunity to honor or remember an augustinian, family member or loved one.

For the love of God and all His children…
