Introduction: In this Study the objective is to remove ammonium from water of a waste

water treatment plant by a liquid-liquid membrane contactor. It will be applied in the Hydrogen and Oxygen production by electrolysis via

renewable energies.

Introduction:Ammonia in water exists in free andionic forms under equilibrium as:

For values below the pKa (9.3),ammonium is greater than ammonia.When pH is higher than the pKa, wefound ammonia as predominantcompound.

Experimental setupAmmonia reacts with OH-ions present inthe water, leading to gaseous ammoniamolecule NH3.

This gas pass through the hydrophobicmembrane porous and reacts with theacid solution, where it is immediatelydissolved as is shown in Figure 2-b.

Experimental setup Materials

The hydrophobic membrane contactor HFMC,(Liqui-Cel X30HF, Celgard, USA).

Ammonium chloride NaOH, H2SO4

Borax Ion Chromatography (ICS-1000 Dionex, USA).

Set-up and procedureThe pH of the feed solutions was sethigher than the usual value of pKa withNaOH. Borax buffer has been used tokeep the pH.

EquationsFollowing assumptions that have beenmade for some authors [1-4]:

Unsteady state and isothermal conditions.

Henry's law is applicable for solution-membrane interface.

No pore blockage

The reaction of ammonia with the sulfuricacid is instantaneous and always occurs inexcess

Flow rates of both ammonia solution andsulfuric acid are constant.

Feed tank operates at the perfect mixing.

Use of COMSOLOne single hollow fiber is simulatedusing a 2D axisymmetric model with thePDE coefficient form

The equations were normalized in termsof the aspect ratio of the fiber.

Recirculation is taken into account as aboundary condition in Z=0, where aODE describes the concentration in thetank as a global equation

Use of COMSOL

The pH of the solution in the tank wasconsidered as a time dependant function,fitted in a previous step in MATLAB fromexperimental results

Results

In the Figure 5 is shown how theconcentration is decreasing when the fluidpass the lumen of a fiber, at R=1 thetransport of the ammonia trough themembrane to the acid solution is occurring.

Conclusions The membrane contactor model can be used to evaluate the hollow fiber

membrane contactors performance for ammonia removal from aqueoussolutions under different conditions and to define the operational parameters.

This model is suitable for prediction of ammonium removal in view the minimaldeviations when compared to the experimental data.

The most important parameters to control during the experiment are the flowrate and the pH, mainly the last one, due to the high dependence in thechemical equilibrium of ammonium reaction to ammonia.

More rigorous approaches will be taken in to account in further works wherethe model include the solution for the hydrodynamics inside the membranecontactor.
