Dear Parishioners,
There are always things to give thanks for – the church full of Art for H-Art and many visitors passing through the Church doors, the life of Gynor Brindley, good friend of the church and the village, given thanks for, the toilet area in the church given a face lift (thank you to Lorna and David Noon), the Read family concert raising £780 for the work of the churches of the group, new children welcomed into school, a new classroom teacher (Miss Sawyer) and Mr Debenham as acting headteacher. The old hymn says Count your blessings, count them one by one, see what God has done.
At our PCC meetings Jean Barbour gives a report on the activities of the church and it is often such a surprise that so much has happened. So many good things for which we often forget to stop and give thanks! I am grateful for all those who have stepped up and helped out whilst my life is on hold for a while.
Nick, my husband, will be taking the Church Harvest Festival on Thursday 12th October at 7pm - a time to stop and reflect on the ups and downs of the last year in the lives of our farmers and the harvest gathered in. It is also a time to give thanks for the food on our plates,
and for the expertise and hard work of those who labour day in and day out to cause that to happen and to God who gives the growth. Rev Michael Denny and Katie Smith are helping out with the school harvest and assemblies and I am grateful for their ministries.
On Sunday, 15th October we are gathering together in Eardisland Church at 10.30am for a special preacher and a special occasion. It is 500 years since Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the church door in Wittenburg complaining against the misdirection of the (as then one) Catholic Church, especially its practices of encouraging people to buy indulgences to help them spend less time in the place between earth and heaven that it called purgatory. This, said Luther, was not something that he read about in the Bible (too true!) and started a split in the Church which led to the protestant church (of which we are a part) and the Roman Catholic Church (which I’m sure has moved on from this strange practice!). Splits in churches are really something that we don’t want, but there are times when we have to stand up for things that we see going on that are wrong. There were others at this time who were pushing for translations of the Bible into the language of the people. This whole time became the Reformation. This

500-year anniversary is a good time to remember what happened and to pledge to work together as one church. Brigette Malik, who is a German Lutheran Priest based in Ludlow, is coming to us for our special service. Do come and join us!
‘The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it’, says the psalmist - the ups and the downs, the harvest and the devastation following the hurricane. He is both the creator and the healer and, whichever place you are in, I hope that you can count your blessings and give thanks to God and see what God has done. I look forward to being back amongst you as soon as I am able.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
Branch Meetings The combined AGM and Social on 4th September was well supported, the quiz and draw raising well over £90. The Minutes of the AGM are being circulated to all members along with the Programme for 2017/18. These will also be displayed on our notice board. The main points from the AGM were:-
a. All Branch Officers were re-elected
b. The Programme for 2017/18 was agreed. Meetings during the winter months (November to March) to start at 12.00
c. A bingo night to be held on 14th October, a widow/widowers lunch to be held on 13th December (at £16 per head) and a summer lunch at Gable Croft in July, 2018
d. Major expenditures during the coming year were the purchase of a new memorial bench for the churchyard (the existing pair are beyond economic repair), donation to the RBL Poppy Appeal, the widow/widowers lunch and participation in the RBL National Pilgrimage in August 2018
e. We will conduct a recruiting campaign at the same time as the Poppy Appeal, especially aimed at the newcomers to the village.

Kingsland Bowling Club (mid-August –
mid-September, 2017) – take the kitty?!
For those not so well up on bowls jargon,
the kitty is usually the jack – but believe it
or not, we had the assistance of a real live
kitty while on Wellington’s artificial green
in mid-August. There we were, being
thrashed by their admirable bowlers – and
suddenly a gorgeous young black-and-
white cat danced onto the green, pounced
on the bowls, and generally caused
mayhem – Dear Kitty, you made my
evening!!
Congratulations to all who took part in
Club Finals Day on 19th
August, and
especially to those who conquered; Tess
Morgan and Chris Hill are our Ladies’ and
Men’s Champion of Champions – well
done, all of you! Thanks also to our
organisers, caterers, supporters and general
assistants; there’s not enough room for all
your names, but we want to emphasise how
important you are – please continue to step
up and keep our lovely club sailing along.
Oh yes, and the green-keeper has informed
me (in confidence, of course, which is why
I can’t resist publishing it) that he was not
included in the last article, so, Dear Green
Super (aka Malcolm), let me assure you
that we love our super green. Many thanks
to you, Bernard and helpers, and don’t
think we don’t appreciate the constant
efforts made.
It is sad to realise that the season is rapidly
coming to an end, however, a goodly
number signed up for the annual Men v
Ladies match on 10th
September. Some
have asked why the Men are not
Gentlemen; I am unable to answer this
delicate question without further research…
however, three noble gentlemen consented
to be Laddies as the Ladies were in short
supply, and we applaud Esmeralda
(Jimmy), Gwyneth (Gary) and – was it
Godzilla ?(Kevin, you’ve not only done an
excellent stint as Competition Secretary –
you’ve also taken the biscuit as a Good-
time Gurl!!) They may all have been
having bad hair days, but they manfully
backed up the girls, and a good time was
had by all, - even if the Men did win in the
end! Our thanks also go to Captain Carol
and Vice-Captain Sandra for their strenuous
work through the season; and above all to
Chairman Rob Parker Morgan for a
tireless, proactive, and encouraging hand on
the tiller – it’s not easy being a Capo, but
you’ve cracked it.
Some more practical reminders for all
members – our Presentation Dinner takes
place on Friday 6th October at the Corners
Inn, Kingsland, 6.30 for 7.00 pm.
Our AGM is on Wednesday 25th
October, 7.30 pm - please do come to this,
and do think about nominations for
Committee posts, as we always need your
input and support; nomination forms are on
the main noticeboard. During October, we
can still socialise on Tuesday Club Nights -
but the Green is closed from 24th
September
and the club field Carpark is also closed
from 30th September. Winter Friday
Nights usually commence in November –
any members who feel inspired to create an
event should contact our splendid Social
Secretary Stuart Cooke. If you want to

Weobley Theatre Goers
We shall be going to see War Horse in
Bristol on Thursday, 19th October, leaving
Bell Square, Weobley at 10.00am.
You have a few days left to book for Cilla,
the Musical. This is a heart-warming
musical adaptation of the critically-
acclaimed ITV mini-series based on the
early life of Cilla Black. The story follows
the extraordinary life of an ordinary
teenage girl from Liverpool and her rocky,
yet incredible, rise to fame. The musical
score is the ultimate soundtrack to the 60s
including Cilla’s greatest hits Anyone Who
Had a Heart, Alfie and Something Tells
Me, alongside a backdrop of the legendary
“Liverpool Sound” including the Beatles’
Twist and Shout, American influences like
California Dreamin’ by the Mamas and the
Papas and many more.
We shall be going to the Bristol
Hippodrome on Thursday, 15th
March,
2018, for the 2.30pm performance, leaving
Bell Square, Weobley at 10.00, allowing a
good two hours for lunch when we get
there. Tickets will be £46 and these are in
rows FGH of the stalls (to the right). To be
paid before 4th October please and, as
usual, within 2 weeks of reserving your
tickets.

Luctonians Sports Club
Matters associated with the start of another
Rugby Season (2017-18) dominate the
news! Some new faces and some local
players are stepping up to the mark, with a
keen following. The league system ensures
there are no easy matches, and players are
asked for a huge commitment to travel to
the likes of Sheffield, Hull, Huddersfield
and Leicester. The prospects look good but
there is a long season ahead! There is time
to reflect on the activity of the summer,
especially the strong 1st Xl Cricket side. I
hope the support will continue. Come
along and judge for yourself.

For many years ‘Nature Notes’ and the

interestingly written by ‘R.W.H’. The
Kingsland News and its readers are very
grateful for his worthy contributions. Sadly
he has now announced that his pieces next
month for the November Kingsland News
will be his last. The Kingsland News is
therefore anxious to find one or possibly
two new contributors to write on these
topics. I know that the work of ‘R.W.H’.

Nature Notes 14/9/17
The days are gradually shortening and, save
for a few patches of beans, the combining
of grain crops is over for another year.
Ploughing and planting continue, and grass
is still growing, but with less feed value for
stock. Cider apples is the next concern
with excess of production over cider sales.
Have Heineken miscalculated? Gin seems
to be the popular drink.
The odd Swallow still about, frantically
feeding late hatches, but the majority gone
to their winter homes in North Africa.
Some will be caught in storms! It seems a
long time until April (the 7th this year)
when their magic return happens. The
abundance of garden fruit and vegetables
continues, almost to the point of excess.
Our favourite fruit has been Figs, straight
off the tree when just ripe. Very few wasps
about – how many nests have you seen?
Bad news on the nut front – the Grey
Squirrels have decimated the crop before
they ripened!
River fish are few and far between. Mink,
Heron and Otters are the main reason for
this and for virtually all fish ponds being
cleared out. Plenty of Foxes about and
many Rabbits in certain areas such as the
Churchyard! A nice selection of butterflies
is to be seen. Bar-B-Q’s have been packed
up – not a good summer for these!

In 1856 a Hereford vicar, John Venn, and
his wife, Amelia, set up a charity, ‘The
Hereford City Mission for the Industrious
Poor.’ This ran for some years helping
people who had fallen on hard times. It
eventually became dormant but in recent
years has been revived under the name
Vennture and now organises street pastors
to help vulnerable at night in Hereford. At
our meeting in September, Steve, a street
pastor told us about the work they do. He
is the first aider in one of the teams of three
volunteers and carries a heavy backpack of
equipment. This is a Christian organisation
involving all denominations. They make
sure anybody in distress or danger is
helped. If there is any danger to themselves
they contact the CCTV centre who can call
the police. They make sure any vulnerable
person can get home safely.
Steve's backpack contains, apart from
medical supplies, water, a dustpan and
brush and flip-flops. They clear up broken
glass and supply flip-flops to young ladies,
who leaving the clubs, kick off their high
heels and walk barefoot.
Steve was very reluctant to get involved and was persuaded by his wife that they both should join. He now feels it was one of the best things he has ever done and no longer judges other people. He is a very entertaining speaker and we all enjoyed his anecdotes.
Our next meeting is on October 11th
to be led by Mrs Carol Dowding on ‘A life in Dresses Christian Dior.’ All are welcome to attend.
