Whentheareafootballschedulewasreleased, the October 10th matchupbetween Coldwater and Marion Localimmediately was circled on the calen-darasamust-seecontest. Now that the 62nd edition of thematchup is just a day away, the gamehas immensely more interest andanticipation. Bothteams,defendingstatechampi-onsfromaseasonago,bothtop-rankedintheirrespectivedivisions(ColdwaterinDivisionV,MarionLocalinDivisionVII)are6-0andsharetheMidwestAth-leticConferenceleadat4-0. MarionLocalcoachTimGoodwinisexcitedforthegame. “It’s easy to get (the players) readymentallytoplayagamelikethis,”Good-winsaid.“Weknewbothteamshadalotbackfromlastyearandfigureditwouldcome down to something similar likethis. “They don’t have much size on defense, but they get to the ball extremely well. They’ve got a cou-ple dynamic kids. Mitch Fullen-kamp (48 tackles, five sacks) jumps out at you, then C.J. Seibert (69 tackles, five tackles for loss) jumps out at you, then you have Brody (24 tackles) and he jumps out at you. They’re very strong up the middle defensively.” The Flyers’ defense led by linebackers Joe Schwieterman (45 tackles, two sacks) and reining Division VII defensive player of the year Jacob Kunkler (44 tack-les, one interception return for touchdown). Otten sees a lot of similarities between the two teams’ defenses. “They all can run. They’re just fast (running) kids,” Otten said. “They maybe only have two kids over 200 pounds on defense. They’re like our guys. They all can run and are really well coached. They blitz a lot, but behind (the blitz), they know where the receiv-ers are. ... They play the right zones. They play the right man (defenses).

They rarely make a mistake and leave someone uncovered. It’s a great challenge.” As for intangibles, Goodwin knows that keeping turnovers to a minimum is a key. The Flyers have had struggles in the give-away-takeaway ratio, currently standing at minus-4. The Cava-liers are plus-3 in the turnover department. “You can look at our game last year. We weren’t that many points better than they were last year, but turnovers were a huge part of that game,” Goodwin said, a refer-ence to two Coldwater turnovers resulting in touchdowns in last season’s game. “We haven’t done well in the turnover margin this year, so that’s a big concern of ours.” Otten’s key is to make sure his offense gets positive yardage each play. “We have to try and eliminate the negative plays,” Otten said. “Marion is so good at getting sacks and tackles for loss. You’ve got to make positive yardage and keep out of those second-and-long and third-and-long situations.”
