Writing Side Cornell Notes: Red on the Left- Black on the right

Voice is the form a verb takes to show whether the subject of the verb performs or receives the action.

There are two types of voice: active voice and passive voice.

Verbs and Voice

Active voice is used to show that the subject of the sentence is performing or causing the action.

Example (Write One):Lebron threw the basketball. Lebron shot the basketball.Lebron scored three points.

Active Voice

Passive voice is used when the subject receives the action. A double verb is always used. (To be + verb)

Example (Write one):The ball was thrown by Lebron. The basket was shot by Lebron. The score was made by Lebron.

Passive Voice

•STRONG WRITING USES ACTIVE VOICE!!!!•Active voice is more direct and concise.•Passive voice is usually wordier.•MOST OF THE TIME, YOU WANT TO USE ACTIVE

VOICE!!!!

When intentionally trying to hide the subject of the sentence.

For example, a politician might say, “The mistake was made by someone.” Hiding the subject helps him/her hide the blame.

When passive voice better emphasizes the main point of the message, such as “Children were harmed by the drunk driver.”

Raise your card to show “A” for ACTIVE or “P” for PASSIVE. Make a tally mark on your “score card” for each answer you get right.

oLouise made the chocolate cake.

The chocolate cake was made by Louise.

The travel agent advertised the package.

The pencil was broken by him.

My brother broke the chain on my bike.

He broke the pencil on the floor.

The prom dress was hemmed by me.

I made the shot.

I hemmed the prom dress.

I ate a habanero pepper!

Example: The boy ate the apple. s v o

Example rewritten: The apple was eaten by the boy. s v o

Lastly, copy the example on a sentence strip. One side should be passive and one side should be active.
