Welcome Message
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, We would like to welcome you to attend the 2013 International Symposium on Surgical Treatments of Lymphedema, which will be held at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou, Taiwan, April 11th and 12th, 2013. The most distinguished experts from around the world, including Drs. Isao Koshima (Japan), David W Chang (USA), Joseph H Dayan (USA), Corinne Becker (France), and Jaume Masia (Spain) will join us. The symposium will provide two days of live surgeries and special lectures focusing on surgical treatments of lymphedema.
Post-mastecomy upper limb lymphedema is a tragic irony for a woman who survives a potentially fatal condition yet has to live the rest of her life with a nonfatal but functionally and aesthetically devastating one. Likewise, lower limb lymphedema can be an equally catastrophic complication of pelvic lymph node dissection in the treatment of ovarian, cervical, and other pelvic cancers. Historically, non-operative treatments focused mainly on the control of infection and maintenance of limb circumference with massage and compression garments. Among the early surgical options were liposuction, wedge excision, ablative surgery with skin grafts, and omental flap, all of which had limited efficacy and/or significant drawbacks. But today, we are seeing promising advancements in the surgical options for lymphedema, including lymphaticovenous anastomoses, autologous breast reconstruction with abdominal tissue that includes lymph nodes, and vascularized groin or submental lymph node transfer.
The live surgeries will demonstrate these emerging strategies, detailing the pre-operative workup and surgical pearls. Special lectures will focus on imaging studies, surgical technique, and basic research in the various aspects of lymphedema. In addition, we will arrange an exclusive tour of the Microsurgery Intensive Care Unit at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital on the second day and visit the first-day patients.
This is a unique opportunity to learn from world-renowned experts in this very important field. We cordially invite you to visit Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan to participate in this spectacular symposium.
Sincerely yours,
