Teachingateacherisliketeachingathousandindividuals!TheSeedlingtoSawmillTeacherTourisanexcitingeventofferedbyFTFeveryJulyinpart-nershipwithTheSummerInstitute,aninternationalorganizationthatprovidesteacherswithcontinuingeducation.Thetourisdesignedtogiveteachersaccurateandscience-basedinformationaboutforestmanagementinanexperientialformat,wheretheycanseetheprocessesandmanagementfirsthand,andlearndirectlyformexpertsinthefield.Ourgreatesthopeisthatthetourwillpositivelyinflu-

enceteacherstobringforestmanagementconceptsintotheirclassrooms,givingstudentsperspectiveandunderstandingaboutactivemanagementofOregon’sforests.

Thisyear,FTFandpartnershostedfifteenK-12educatorsfromdiversesubjects,includingScience,SocialScience,EnvironmentalStudies,Economics,andevenPhysicalEducation.Themorninginclud-edavisittoOregonDepartmentofForestry,wherestewardshipforester,RobinBeisecker,oriented

teacherstoforestmanagementintheregionandtotheOregonForestPracticesAct.TeachersthentouredSwansonBrothersMillinNotiwithforester,JaymeDumford,tolearnhowlogsarepurchasedandtowitness,firsthand,themillingprocess.

Intheafternoon,teachersexperiencedaworkingtreefarm.TheytouredmanagementunitsofBau-manTreeFarmwithtreefarmowner,LindsayReaves,learningaboutmanagementobjectivesandseeingtheapplicationofbestforestpractices.Aviewfromaridgeallowedteacherstowitnesssustainableforestryfromalandscapeperspective,andawalkalongariparianareagaveperspectiveonmanage-mentpracticestoprotectwaterresources.Thedayconcludedwithapanelofindustryprofessionalsdiscussingtheirperspectives,andgivinganoppor-tunityforteacherstoaskquestionsandengageinconversationaboutforestmanagementatallscales.

Weareproudofthetourthatweoffereachsummer,andstrivetoprovidealearningcontextmuchlikeatypicalteacherhopestoprovideforhisorherownstudents.Wefindthatteachersfeelopentoaskabundantquestions,aregenuinelycuriousabouttheinformationpresented,andwanttoknowmoreattheendoftheday!Asanaddedbonus,some-timesteacherstakeaparticularinterestinprogramsweofferforstudentsatlocaltreefarms.Thisyear,wepickedupMadisonMiddleSchool,locatedinEugene,toparticipateinForestFieldDays.

Thankyoutoourpartnersforhelpingmakethedayasuccess:SwansonBrothersMillandJaymeDum-fordforthemilltour;RobinBeiseckerforthepresen-tation;TomBaumanandLindsayReavesforopeninguptheirtreefarmfortheevent;andtoTomBauman,RyanBeyer,TallyPatton,DickPowell,MaryraeThom-sonforparticipationontheforestrypanel.

Theeveningwascool,themusicwasfantastic,thewinewasflowing,andpeoplewerebidding!TheFirstAnnualSoiree&SilentAuctionwasahugesuc-cess!Ninty-threepeoplecameouttoSweetCheekstoshowtheirsupport,andnearly$2500wasraisedforforestryeducation!

ForestsToday&ForeverandLongTomWatershedCouncil(LTWC)togetherhostedaprogramtoeducatepeopleaboutforestmanagementonsmalllandholdingsinthewatershed.Forty-threepeopleattendedthe“Water,Woodlands,&Wildlife”touratBaumanTreeFarm,whichincludedawalkingtourofmanagementunits,withpresentationsbyTomBauman,landowner;OleBuchoftheOregonDepartmentofForestry;SteveCole,contractforester;andBruceNewhouse,ecologist.Thetourprovidedperspectivesonhowlandownergoals,habitatprotection,economics,andregulationsworktogetherandinfluenceoneanother.

Theaudiencewasengaged!Peopleaskedplentifulquestions,showedinterestinthepresentations,andexemplifiedcuriosityaboutforestmanagementpracticesandwaterresources.Manypeoplecametotheeventviathewatershedcouncil,givingFTFanopportunitytoengageanewaudienceinaconversationaboutforestmanagement—an

audiencethatwewouldnothaveotherwisereachedwithoutourgreatpartnershipwithLTWC.

ThankyoutoLTWCforworkingwithustoprepareagreatevent,toourspeakerslistedabove,andtoTomBaumanandLindsayReavesforprovidingthevenue.
