Meet Presiding Bishop-Elect
Michael Bruce Curry
Michael Bruce Curry was elected eleventh Bishop of North Carolina on February 11, 2000. He was consecrated on June 17, 2000, at Duke Chapel on the campus of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 13, 1953, Bishop Curry attended public schools in Buffalo, New York, and graduated with high honors from Hobart College in Geneva, New York, in 1975. He received the Master of Divinity degree in 1978 from Yale University Divinity School. He has also done continued study at The College of Preachers, Princeton Theological Seminary, Wake Forest University, the Ecumenical Institute at St. Mary's Seminary, and the Institute of Christian Jewish Studies.
Bishop Curry was ordained to the diaconate in June 1978, at St. Paul's
Cathedral, Buffalo, New York, by the Rt. Rev. Harold B. Robinson and to the priesthood in December 1978, at St. Stephen's, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, by the Rt. Rev. John M. Burgess. He began his ministry as deacon-in-charge at St. Stephen's, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1978 and was rector there from 1979-1982. He next accepted a call as rector at St. Simon of Cyrene, Lincoln Heights, Ohio, where he served from 1982-1988. In 1988 he became rector of St. James', Baltimore, Maryland, which he served until his election as bishop. In his three parish ministries in North Carolina, Ohio, and Maryland, Bishop Curry had extensive involvement in Crisis Control Ministry, founding of ecumenical summer day camps for children, preaching missions, the Absalom Jones initiative, creation of networks of family day care providers, creation of educational centers, and the brokering of millions of dollars of investment in inner city neighborhoods. He inspired a $2.5-million restoration of the St. James' church building after a fire. The St. James' After School Academy was designated a Jubilee Ministry by Presiding Bishop Edmund Browning. Bishop Curry has served on the boards of a large number of organizations and was a member of the Commission on Ministry in each of the three dioceses where he has served. He has a national preaching and teaching ministry, having been featured on The Protestant Hour and as a frequent speaker at conferences around the country. He has received honorary degrees from Sewanee and Yale. He is married to the former Sharon Clement, and they have two daughters, Rachel and Elizabeth. The Rt. Rev. Michael Bruce Curry was elected 27th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church on June 27 at the 78th General Convention. A liturgy marking the beginning of Curry’s ministry as presiding bishop and primate will be celebrated November 1, All Saints Day, at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. To hear his sermon at the closing Eucharist of General Convention visit: http://episcopaldigitalnetwork.com/ens/2015/07/03/video-presiding-bishop-elect-michael-curry-preaches-at-general-convention-closing-eucharist/. -episcopalchurch.org

We deeply appreciate all of our volunteers and those who donate to this ministry. It would not be possible without you! Thank you to Modern Woodmen of America and Wayne and Sue Ann Averett for providing rice and bean meals that have been handed out to our Saints’ Brew guests. Each packet serves six and we were provided 144 packets. These meals are part of a project by Modern Woodmen to “Knock Out Hunger.” United Way will soon be starting their fund raising for the 2016 year. Please consider, when contributing to the United Way through your work place, designating Saints’ Brew on your donation form as the organization you wish your donation to support. This will assist Saints’ Brew with keeping the same level of funding as last year. Finally, we have had dedicated volunteers resign from shopping for Saints’ Brew and taking away our recycling. The shopping position takes a few hours one morning or afternoon every four to six weeks. The recycling job involves picking up the recycling from the kitchen on a weekly basis but we can be flexible. Right now we need someone to pick up recycling on Wednesdays. If anyone wants to volunteer for either job please contact Mona Warlick. As always we appreciate your donations. Sugar, coffee, creamer, canned fruit (#10 size) and cereal (please no Cheerios, as we already have them) are always welcome. Thank you so much for your support; without you Saints’ Brew would not exist. For more information on Saints’ Brew visit: http://allsaintstupelo.com/all/?page_id=2. -Mona Warlick

Neighborhoodlife ~ Spotlight on Outreach. . .
All Saints’ Neighborhood Life Committee invites the parish to participate in a community outreach project. On Sunday, September 27, at 4:00 p.m. we will gather in the parish hall to put together “hygiene bags” for Helping Hands Helping Homeless. Helping Hands Helping Homeless (nicknamed Quad H) is an organization with the expressed purpose of "assisting" the homeless of North Mississippi with improved living conditions. Quad H works with governmental, charitable agencies and area churches to facilitate improved services for the homeless. Quad H is proud of its "partnerships" with The Salvation Army, American Red Cross and SAFE. They receive NO monies from the government, grants or United Way—they operate solely on donations. Each Saturday Quad H feeds people lunch on site at The Salvation Army from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. While they are feeding the homeless, they also pass out hygiene bags to people who need them. Each gallon-size ziptop bag contains travel-size shampoo, conditioner, lotion and Kleenex, a small bottle of water, peanut butter crackers, a fruit cup, and a plastic spoon. The Neighborhood Life Committee is collecting items for the hygiene bags. Our goal is to fill 200 hygiene bags to give to Quad H! We also need folks of ALL ages to help us put together the bags. You can sign up to donate items in the church on Sunday mornings or in the church office during the week. Donated items need to be received before Friday, September 25, please. Donated items can be left in the narthex on Sundays or the church office during the week. If you need more information about this project or about Helping Hands Helping Homeless, please contact Rufus Van Horn or Mary Howard King.
Join us for our next meeting Tuesday, September 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sr. High Sunday School room

Sundays @ 9:30 a.m. Children 3 years old–6th grade
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a mainstay at All Saints’ for 3 year olds to those in the sixth grade. Catechesis is a Montessori approach to the religious formation of children, rooted in the Bible, scripture and the liturgy of the church.
Here’s what we’re exploring in September…
Our Level I children (3 year olds-K) will be exploring the relationship between Jesus the Good Shepherd and ourselves the sheep; how Jesus knows each of us by name and brings us into the sheepfold. As his sheep, we know His voice and we follow Him. The older children will be exploring the Bible and its use in the Prayer Corner. This work helps them to develop and nurture a respect and reverence for scripture, to further explore the nature of God and Jesus and to explore the Holy Bible as the thread that connects God to all people.
Our Level II children (1st–3rd grades) will explore the enthronement of the Holy Bible, a celebration of the Word of God, meant for all people. The children new to this atrium will receive their own Bibles for their use in the atrium. Later in the month, the children will explore La Fettuccia. In the past, you may have seen the children working with the long blue ribbon in the hallway. This work explores the big picture (globalita) of the history of the kingdom of God.
Our Level III children (4th-6th grades) will explore the miracles that Jesus performed, and the plan of God. The purpose of this lesson is to show that God has a plan for us and our part in that plan.
Youth Connecting Faith & Life 7th – 12th Grades
Sundays, 9:30 a.m. Sr. High Sunday School room
This class offers topical, yet Bible-based lessons based on current events and other trending subjects that have an immediate relevancy to youth. What better way
to capture the attention of a young person than to discuss things that are important to them, and to talk about what they are talking about.
EYC (for youth in 7th-12th grades) starts back on Sunday, September 13. This month, we will meet on September 13, 20, and 27 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Gather in the EYC room (behind the chapel). Volunteers for this year are Britt Hester, Cheryl Sproles, and Leslie Criss.
DOY weekends are held at Camp Bratton Green. The cost is $75. Register online at youth.dioms.org. For Junior High, dates are September 11-13. For Senior High, dates are November 6-8.
For more information, contact Stacy Carroll, youth director, at stacy@allsaintstupelo.org or any volunteer.
For adults. . . Understanding the Sunday Scriptures Sundays at 9:30 a.m. (8:30 a.m. until September 13)
South breakout room of the Parish Hall
Led by Les Alvis, this class studies the Biblical texts appointed by the Revised Common Lectionary and is made for those who wish to journey deeper into the message and meaning of each Sunday’s lesson. The class critically analyzes the Biblical texts, asking questions such as: Who wrote the text and when was it written? What is the historical and social context of the text? What was the author’s intent in writing the text? The class then discusses what the texts tell us about God and what the texts mean for us today.
CHRISTIAN FORMATION
