Gudrun
Yngvadottir,
from
Gardabaer,
Iceland, was
elected to
serve as
first vice
president of Lions Clubs
International at the association’s
100th International Convention,
held in Chicago, Illinois, USA,
June 30 through July 4, 2017.
President Yngvadottir is a
Biomedical Scientist and has
worked in research, education
and management. Since 1990
she has worked at the
University of Iceland as Vice
Director at the Institute of
Continuing Education. A
member of the Gardabaejar Eik
Lions Club since 1992, President
Yngvadottir has held many
offices within the association,
including district governor
council chairperson. She has
dedicated her service to children
and youth, membership and
leadership development, health
and wellness, including vision
and diabetes, environmental
projects and Lions Clubs
International Foundation (LCIF).
President Yngvadottir served as
International Director 2010-
2012 on the Leadership
Committee, as Chairperson the
second year; 2011-2013 on the
Women’s Task Force; 2012-
2013 she was a Board Appointee
on the District and Club Service
Committee; and 2013-2014 on
LCIF Governance Ad Hoc
Committee. In recognition of her
service, she has received
numerous awards including the
Kjarans Medal, the highest
award of Icelandic Lions; the
Lions Crystal, the highest award
of Norwegian Lions; several
Membership and Extension
Awards; eleven International
President’s Awards; and the
Ambassador of Good Will Award,
the highest Lions Clubs
International award. She is also
a Progressive Melvin Jones
Fellow.
In addition to her Lions
activities, President Yngvadottir
is active in numerous
professional and community
organizations, including the
Icelandic Association of
Biomedical Scientists and has
been their representative in
Scandinavian and European
cooperation. Vice President
Yngvadottir and her husband,
Dr. Jon Bjarni Thorsteinsson, a
past international director and a
Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow,
have one son, one daughter and
six grandchildren.

The serving of the food was
much later than predicted by
the school. This left the
children hungry and restless.
In speaking with the principal
changes will be made next year
to be more organized with the
event. To make it more fun for
all that attend. Especially the
young ones.

Dogs, popcorn, Chips, Juice and
Candy. This was a community

RCMP Musical Ride is scheduled to
be at Sooke Fred Milne Park on
August 18th and 19th Sooke
Sooke Lions Club will be hoping
for other clubs to assist them in
this endeavor all proceeds will be
donated to the Cops for Cancer.
District council has saddled up to
bring the iconic RCMP Musical
Ride to Sooke this summer.
Sooke councilors pledged $10,000
to help sponsor the event, along
with the Sooke Lions Club. More
sponsors are needed.
Although there’s no charge from
the RCMP for the event, there are
other costs, including horse feed,
hay, shavings, bleachers sound
systems, portable toilets and
shuttle buses. Cost estimates are
$25,000 to $30,000.
This year, the theme was be the Great War Ceasefire and the last 100
days of WW1.
The Esquimalt Lions provided the
events food services BBQ, serving up their famous hot dogs with all proceeds going back into the community.
Fifth Annual Fort Macaulay Historic Interpretation
Event. It was an opportunity to learn more about this l ittle known historic site in Esquimalt.
Built by the Royal Engineers in 1895 as a sister site to Fort Rodd Hill.

The Lions Clubs of Sooke host the RCMP Musical Ride
August 18 noon & 19 at 5 pm
RCMP Musical Ride is a big event for
a small community to host. In
order to be successful it requires
organization and many helping
hands. The Lions and Lioness in
Sooke need our help in August to
make this event the success it can
be. On the Thursday and Friday
August 16th and 17th Lions are
Sooke Lions Clubs and Lioness Club need your help
“We hope to raise some funds with partnerships with local
government and businesses that might benefit from this high-profile event,” said Steve Wright, a Sooke
Lions Club member.

As volunteer appreciation week contin-ues we would like to take the time to
skills usable in employment. - Encourage personal development of skills and attitudes to help others. - Affirm progress in every session.
The group can often be seen in the Jubi-lee Hall playing a variety of sports or in the Rec Centre Atrium for debriefs and social time.

PZC Lion Joe Buczkowski
was born in Salzburg Austria, in 1942 and
emigrated to Canada in 1951, settling in Fort
William Ontario for four years before finally
settling in Vancouver in 1955.
On 01 March 1997, Joe joined the world’s
largest association, Lions, because of the
motto “WE SERVE” during which time he was
President, twice as well as Zone Chair.
Lion Sandy Englehart
Married Nadine in 1970. They have two chil-dren Marcia and Andy who has two boys Aiden (16) and Ashton (13). Sandy retired from the University of Calgary as chief power engineer. Sandy was a lion for 29 years before joining Esquimalt Lions in 2015. He has served as secretary, and president of his Calgary Club.
Lion Alana Foster was born and raised in Victoria and graduated from Colquitz Jr. Secondary school. She has worked for PSC Natural Foods, The Real Canadian Wholesale Club and Marquise. Alana has been a Lion for 24 years and transferred from Victoria Central Lions Club.

Peter to be awarded a Judge Brian
Stevenson Fellowship. This prestigious
award named after Judge Brian
Stevenson one of the few Canadians who
rose to the office of International
President of Lions International.
This presentation was made at the clubs
Installation Evening on June 19th.
Some of the events included in
the show were log burling, canoe
tilting, professional fly casting,
diving, retriever trials, roller
skating acts, acrobatics and even
a bathing beauty contest.
Manufacturers of sporting goods,
travel agencies, and resort
owners had booths on the arena
floor, displaying the finest of
sports equipment.
“Bringing the Outdoors Indoors”
was the aim of the Esquimalt
Lions Club first project. The Club
sponsored the first Vancouver
Island Sportsmen Show at the
Memorial Arena on September 20
– 22, 1951. A special indoor
water tank holding 75,000 gal-
lons of water and measuring 75
feet by 30 feet was brought in
from Vancouver.

Teamwork was the act for the day with no shortage of volunteers. Lots of lions energy throughout both days was FABU-LOUS! Organization of Chair Peter Pfann – quick set up; quick take down Pre Planning – ordering of food and pre cook of sausages Familiarity – the people of Oak Bay know you are there and come because of that everyone loved that we were com-pletely compostable Debit machine – many people asked about debit machines for using credit cards or debit cards….definitely would be a conversation to have – would increase revenue by minimum 5%.

Scanner being used in

scanner has been
successfully
introduced to SD 63 Saanich in 2017-18 by the
Central Saanich Lions. Brian Morin has agreed
to chair the Spot Scanner committee for the
club and proceed with the introduction of the
scanner to SD 61 (Victoria) this fall.

The Lions Club of Esquimalt is committed to: improving
quality of life; developing a communal spirit within the
community; and to supporting the broader principles and
activities of Lionism.
Club History
We received our Charter (007982) on 4 May 1951, spon-sored by the Victoria Central Lions Club. Since then we have been involved in many community, regional, national
and international projects.
Meetings
We meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM. We go into meeting recess for the summer months of July and August. Project continue when we have enough Lions.
Meeting Place
We meet in the Victoria West Lawn Bowling Clubhouse, 407 Alston St, Victoria. Entry to the parking lot is off Bay Street
next door to the Da Vinci Centre.

encompasses Vancouver Island BC and the Olympic Peninsula, WA. We are in Zone 2 which also includes the following Lions Clubs: Royal Oak; Saanich; Sooke; Sooke Harbourside; Victoria Chinatown; Victoria Imperial; and West Shore. It also includes the Victoria Chinatown and
Sooke District Lioness clubs.
