President’s Message

Welcome back to Fairfax Quilters Unlimited.

Before we begin our new hybrid year, I want to pause to thank Deb Spitz for her leadership and calm during her more than difficult two terms. She remains as a vital advisor to the Executive Board as she readies her forever home in Florida.

After two wild and wacky years, it is wonderful to again be planning in-person meetings. Of course, we are still under threat from the Covid virus and its variants so we will be following the Governor's mandates. Please wear a mask while at the church for everyone's safety. This will be a blended year. Most business meetings will be at the church and the program meetings will be virtual. Beth has arranged some lovely lectures and workshops for you to follow right in the comfort of you own studio. This may be the wave of the future and FQU is on the surf board ahead of the wave.

Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find a short article about the Hospitality Committee. Because of crowding in the refreshment area and the new fashion of all food being wrapped, the Board has decided to put refreshments on hiatus until the spring. If you get hungry, bring a snack.

The first three meetings will look very much like business meetings including Sew and Tell and Free To A Good Home. If you are participating in those programs and are coming to all three meetings, it would be advisable to divide your stuff into three. Bring 1/3 of your Sew and Tell and 1/3 of your Free To A Good Home to each meeting. And, to keep all meetings simple, each committee chair is limited to three minutes to read her report. Exceptions can be made but we don't need to know everything about the committee. More the Cliff's notes than Gone With The Wind.

As we begin the new normal, we anticipate going on two retreats, attending two luncheons, an auction in the spring, learning from lectures and workshops, a block exchange, a quilt along, Finishing School and two challenges . But, mostly is the anticipation of quilting returning to three dimensions. Real people, real quilts, real people talking about their quilts. Nothing could be better! It has been a long summer, almost 18 months long.

See you in September Kathy

There will be no snacks or coffee offered at FQU for the foreseeable future. With the variants spreading rapidly, we can not encourage close bodily contact as you dive for that last cookie. If you need a drink or snack to make it through our two hour meeting, please bring your own. We will not have a break in the meeting so quietly leave the room to refresh yourself in the hallway. This should simplify clean-up.

Before you leave, check your area for lost items or trash. We want to leave the church ready for the next event.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Hope you are looking forward to the new Quilt Year as much as I am.

If you have quilt tops, or better yet, completed quilts, please bring them to the first in-person meeting. We have some backing fabrics or can make backs before transferring to the long arm quilters. ANY NEW long armers? We seem to have need for more quilters.

I will have quilt kits all cut and available at the meetings.

We have many quilts in storage ready for delivery when we are able to donate. We did, over the past quilt year, donate about 2 dozen each to Fort Belvoir and to Operation Homefront, as well as the over 290 burp cloths to the latter. Ten went to Bethany house and over a dozen to Blanketeers. We thank Bobbie Dewees who has made over 200 hundred NICU quilts during the pandemic.

Read the request in the latest DIGEST for larger quilts for Ronald McDonald House. I am measuring ours to see if any are the requested size. See the suggested sizes listed below (on page 3) that we seek for Community Service. (Put a photo on your phone or post in your sewing room.)

PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS

Aloha!

No, I haven’t been on vacation to the great state of Hawaii except in my dreams. I just love greetings in other languages.

At some point in my life I thought it would be great to stay at home and not have any obligations somewhere else. Just think of all the sewing I could get done! Well, it was fun in the beginning but that quickly wore thin. Now its time to go forth and view the world and all it has to offer (in a masked and socially distanced manner)!

I have a great way for us to venture forth! Come to St Peters in the Woods and visit with masked friends! For those who are not able or willing to attend in person, we will have a Zoom meeting open. You will not be able to speak but you can ask questions in the chat and be able to watch the meeting.

Our first three meetings will be an opportunity for everyone to catch up and show what we’ve been sewing. We are taking so much time because we know we’ve been busy and there is so much to show and tell! Please consider splitting up your presentations and your gifts to the “free to a good home” table into smaller amounts. There is only so much room in our cars.

Our first presenter is Suzi Parron in October in a Zoom format. I hope to have a location where some of us can gather to watch on a big screen TV. November’s program is an afternoon presentation as Maria Shell lives in Alaska and has little ones to put on the bus, I’m looking into planning two Zoom workshops in the winter/spring timeframe. Stay tuned!

This is so exciting!!!! Beth Shafer

Patriotic Pillowcase Project Package sponsored by the Blue Star Mothers of

Fredericksburg.

If you want to carry on and make pillowcases for this project, I thank you in advance.

Use Patriotic fabric. (Red White and Blues) It takes 3/4 yard of quality fabric you would want to rest your face on for the body, 1/4 yard coordinating fabric for the cuff and 2 inch coordinating fabric trim between the cuff and body of pillowcase - selvage to selvage (not fat quarters). Below is a link to a pattern with pictures that can help you make a pillowcase. *Instead of French seams, using a serger is fine. https://www.seasonedhomemaker.com/pillowcasetutorial-burrito-style/

Masks

Just as we follow Fairfax County's weather advisories, FQU will also follow their mask mandate in public buildings. Please wear a mask while attending our in-person meetings. If you forget yours or don't own one, pick up a disposable one at the membership table. Use your mask as a fashion statement or a conversation starter. Bling is always appropriate. Hand sanitizer will also be available. As the state policy changes so will our policy but it will always be to stay safe and protect our friends.

Summer/Fall Chapter Challenge:

Fairfax QU Challenge for June to December 2021 – "The Appliance Colors of the 1970s"

What do these color descriptions bring to mind? - Harvest Gold - Avocado Green - Coppertone Brown - Poppy Red - Almond - Teal

These might have been the colors in your first kitchen or in your Mom’s kitchen.

This chapter challenge for Fairfax QU is to create a quilted object incorporating one or more, or all, of “The Appliance Colors of the 1970s.”

Your interpretation of the challenge is due at our December 2021 luncheon.

News from the Treasurer

The new treasurer is Mary Ansoff. I can be reached at email addresses [email protected] or [email protected] or calling my cell at 703-623-1024. If you have any questions about deposits or getting reimbursed for expenses or what category the expense fits, please email or call me. Remember to be very careful if you are asked for money for someone. Make sure it is really a QU expense by asking what category should be used.

For reimbursement, please fill out the payment reimbursement form that was sent out in a blast this summer. If you don’t have the form let me know and I will email you one. Each reimbursement form needs a receipt(s) for the purchase. You can give me both in person or scan and email the form and receipt to me. A line-item charge on a bank statement is not acceptable as a receipt. Also, please separate QU reimbursement receipts from receipts for personal items.

If you have any questions please email or call me.

We have an extensive collection of books and tools for you to check out of our library! It is listed on the website LibraryThing.com, and can be accessed at www.librarything.com/catalog/FfxQU.

Take a look at our collection and see what you might like to check out. Please make use of this amazing resource.

Nadine Duke, our librarian, asks that you make arrangements with her for any library books you may need by calling her cell phone at 703-593-5506 instead of her home phone. She can also be reached at her email address [email protected]. Thank you.

Did you know…..?

Did you know that Fairfax QU has it’s own Facebook page? If you’d like to join in on the fun, got to Fairfax QU’s page next time you’re on Facebook and ask to be admitted. At that time our page administrator, Donna DeSoto will verify your membership in Fairfax QU and accept your request.

Block Exchange

The group has completed our exchange, and plan to show off our quilt tops at the October business meeting. If you have ideas or pattern suggestions that you think would work well for a Block Exchange for this year, please send them to me. Joan Mayer Magazine Sales

FQU offers gently used magazines to guild members for 25 cents. If you have 2017 -2021 issues to give away, please bring them to the meeting and I will make them available for sale. At this time I will take quilting, needlework, and fiber arts issues. Proceeds currently are used to fund books for our lending library. Amy Flenniken

Blanketeers

The Blanketeers still are not meeting although we are exploring possible dates in the new year. Meanwhile, we have been busy. Mollie took 40 quilts to Ronald McDonald House and I have delivered 300 pillowcases to Inova Children's Hospital.

If you have finished quilts, or tops to be finished, you may give them to us at the meeting. We will see that they are labeled and/or finished. Plus, I am always in need of kid prints and polka dots or other coordinating fabrics (full width only please.) I understand that pillowcases aren't under the QU umbrella, but if you're cleaning up or sorting out and have some that need a new home, I'm always excited to have more choices when making up the sets.

Thanks for your continuing and generous support. Leslie

Free to a Good Home

Please bring your QUILTING related items to give away at the first three meetings. Many of us have been cleaning and organizing in our time of quarantine and have lots to share. I also want to encourage all of you to “shop” at our free table. Please remember that we have our first 3 meetings to bring in freebies.

Thanks, Linda Moore

Finishing School

Are you ready for another year of Finishing School? This is an ideal time to assess your Works in Progress (WiPs) or unfinished items (UFOs) and make a commitment to get them behind you. For the Fairfax Finishing School entrance exam, you only need to list 9 items you fully intend to complete. Be sure to number your listed items. Then you submit your list to the Administrator: [email protected] and keep a copy for yourself. That is all you need for enrollment. Thereafter, on the 1st day of the month, Sept. through May, your gentle Administrator will draw a number at random and announce it to the class. Whatever project you have listed for that number, becomes your homework assignment for the month. When the reminder email of the homework due date goes out to the class, you respond "reply all" and attach a picture of your completed assignment and a brief explanation for what was holding you back. These works become part of the chapter Show and Tell, to inspire others. The reminder email usually goes out a week before the due date, to allow procrastinators to kick into high gear. There are no failures, just remediation. Entertaining and creative excuses are accepted. Here are a few hints that students have embraced: 1. You can break a big project down into 9 components, like blocks for a quilt. Just be sure you do not list separate but sequential steps, since "9-bind charity quilt" might be chosen well before "5-make charity quilt top." 2. Do not promise more than you can reasonably deliver. Instead of "finish applique top" you could just list "work on a section of the applique top." Vague is good. Wiggle room is good. 3. Any work on your project is acceptable! Just keep at it. 4. Substitutions are acceptable when it is an emergency, or you just can't do your assignment. You should let your Administrator know. 5. Any help for another in need (making facemasks, taking food to someone who is ill, etc.) gets you a pass for the month. 6. You may make a 2-part list, with a more involved project OR an easy project, both listed. That way, if your month gets out-of-hand, you can do the easy item and hold your head up. Graduation will be sometime in June. Your last assignment, whatever number gets drawn for May, is due June 1. Diplomas to issue thereafter. Your Administrator already has her 2-part list composed. (Yes, 18 items remain undone in her Sewing Room.) I hope you will consider joining in the fun! Kath Heslep

Membership for Fairfax QU Fiscal Year, July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022 There are some changes made to this upcoming year’s membership form. You are supposed to be able to fill out the information digitally and change any preferences that QU has preselected for you. Depending on what version of software you are using, it’s possible this may not work on your computer. If there is a problem, a membership form will be printed in the Stash every month for you to fill out.

Memberships *remain at $30 for regular membership,

*remain at $10 for Associate membership,

*family memberships have been eliminated,

*the lifetime membership option has been eliminated from the form, but still exists for grandfathered lifetime members. For those who are grandfathered lifetime members, you will be emailed a membership form from QU membership to be filled out, along with instructions on where to send it. Be aware that if you don’t submit a form each year, your grandfathered Lifetime status will cease, and you will have to pay dues of $30 for the following year.

Membership cards are discontinued. If you so desire a digital membership card, notify me and I will have one sent to you.

Since we are changing treasurers, I’m not sure if your membership checks will be held until July 1st when the changeover occurs, so do not be concerned if your check is not cashed right away. If you don’t desire your checks to be held for that long, please wait until closer to July 1st to turn in your memberships.

You can still purchase membership pins, but I will not mail them. They don’t make it unscathed through the postal service. When we start having real meetings, you can purchase a pin from me at the meeting. I still have a pile of pins earmarked for those of you who have purchased them during the last year, and you may pick them up at our next real live meeting.

Mail your form (page 9) and your dues, by snail mail, to Jane M Brown, 6610 Saddlehorn Ct, Burke VA 22015-4173. If and when we start meeting in person, you can also turn in your memberships at the meeting.
