President’s Message

Yet another winter month comes to a close without any significant snow! Perhaps I have now jinxed us, but some snow might be nice.

Thank you to everyone for being so flexible and understanding with the rearranging of the Storm at Sea class with Leslie Pfeifer, which is now being held at The Quilters Studio on March 13th. The shop opens at 10am, so you will have time to set up, and class will be from 10:30 to 4:30. Please review your class supply list, and we’ll see you then! We were treated to a nice presentation today by Leslie in using Marti Michell templates in other commercial patterns. I can’t wait to learn more at the class!

Spring Retreat is right around the corner! I can’t wait; I always have so much fun at our retreats. If you haven’t attended a retreat in the past, you should give it a try, you will be glad you did!

We also still have a few more programs to enjoy and learn new techniques from this year. See information on those later in the newsletter.

And lastly, be thinking about how you can help keep Fairfax QU running strong! We’ve had a great year, and we need your help to continue, so unblock Kathy Gray from your Caller IDs, and come have a great time with Fairfax QU Executive Board and Committees!! Take care of each other, Deb

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE FAIRFAX CHAPTER OF QUILTERS

UNLIMITED February 6, 2020

The meeting was called to order at 10:03 by President Deb Spitz.

Louise Sutara announced that we had two visitors: Leigh Ann Solometo and Patricia Church. Our new member is Darcy Walker.

The Minutes of the January 2, 2020 meeting were approved as corrected. [Correction was changing the President’s last name from Spritz to Spitz. And the chair of the Spring Retreat is Nancy Adams, not Nancy Evans.]

The Treasurer’s Report was given orally. A written version will be provided to a member, upon request.

The President reported on the coming change in the legal structure of Quilter’s Unlimited. All QU chapters lost the non-profit status because of failure, for 3 years in a row, to send in the little card to the IRS, claiming non-profit status. Mary Ansoff, the Treasurer for big QU, worked very hard to resolve the issues. The result, in consultation with the attorney and accountant for big QU, is that we will be changing our organizational structure to an MSLLC. That will entail changing bank accounts, getting a new tax ID number for the chapter. We need a clean slate. More checks and balances will be put in place. Big QU will handle all tax reporting. Though Fairfax just changed bank accounts this past year, we will have to do it again. This will cost around $70.00, to purchase new checks and an endorsement stamp. Because this non-budget item is more than $50.00, the President needs a motion to spend the money to accomplish this changeover. Linda Keithley made a Motion to allocate the money to change our account to conform to the re-structuring. Kathy Gray seconded it. The Motion carried, unanimously, without discussion.

Nominating Chair, Kathy Gray, asks for nominations for the offices of Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Nominating. Deb Spitz has agreed to stand for a second year. Contact Kathy Gray in person, by phone 703-361-6471, or by email to [email protected], to make your recommendations.

Challenges: Fran Hays presented the participants of the current challenge, Fancy Backs. There were about 10 examples of innovative backs, and Desiree Bergeron’s was shown for her---a purple version of Yellow Brick Road. The next challenge is to make something composed of HST (half-square triangles). This challenge is due at the business meeting that precedes the Spring Luncheon, i.e. May 7, 2020.

Service projects : Dottie Dane thanked all who have made tops and blocks. She noted that Kathy Gray has been taking 5- at-a-time to quilt.

Display quilt was made by Maria Wilkins. She saw the fabric at our show a few years ago and found the pattern of squares. She had to use her floor as a “design wall.” The pattern is called Dancing Dragonflies. The quilting was done by Beth Schaefer.

Hospitality was provided with refreshments by Pat Washburn, Sandra Rees, Diane Yim, Betsye Mustain, and Chris Kugler. Thank you!

Library today has lots of magazines (for purchase) and a few books.

Spring Luncheon plans were announced by Donna DeSoto. The Luncheon will be on June 4, 2020, at the Springfield Country Club. We can wear fancy outfits and hats, too. The cost per person will be between $30 and (Continued on page 4)

Use Patriotic fabric. (Red White and Blues) It takes 3/4 yard of quality fabric you would want to rest your face on for the body, 1/4 yard coordinating fabric for the cuff and 2 inch coordinating fabric trim between the cuff and body of pillowcase - selvage to selvage (not fat quarters). Below is a link to a pattern with pictures that can help you make a pillowcase. *Instead of French seams, using a serger is fine. https://www.seasonedhomemaker.com/pillowcase-tutorial-burrito-style/

(Minutes continued from page 3)

34.00. Samples of a possible exchange block will be presented in March. Additionally, we will collect fidget quilts made by members, to be used by those suffering from cognitive decline. These are small quilts, about 18”x24”, that have a variety of tactile things on them, like zippers, pompoms, Velcro flaps, pockets, a thread track to slide a button along. They could use different textures like velvet, flannel, corduroy, using 6 1/2” squares. (The background fabric should not be too highly patterned.) These must be washable! Use the Free Table as a resource.Quilt Show Representatives Melinda Fuller and Mollie Weinert announced that carry bags for show quilts are available in different colors. They are $10 each.

Quilt Collector Arlene Page announced that 23 quilts have been photographed. Fairfax has registered 24 quilts. Overall, 248 quilts have been registered. Class registration will be opened on February 10 at 9 am. Visit the QU website to see all the available classes.

Fall Retreat announcement by Leslie Pfeifer is that the dates will be Nov. 5-8 at the hotel in Winchester, VA. The room rate went up $5 to $124.00 per night, which includes breakfast. The cost to participate will still be $37.00. Additionally, Leslie has made 120 pillowcases since Jan. 1, 2020. If you give her fabric for these, do not give her anything smaller than 1/3 yard as that it the smallest yardage needed. Do not give her scraps or blocks, please. Additionally, Leslie will email a supply list to anyone who is taking the February workshop with her.

Joanne Stone announced that she will take 10 9”x12” blocks for pillows to be held for comfort, by juvenile surgery patients.

Programs . Vice President, Susan Haftel, reported that there were 12 places available in the March workshop with Bonnie Rhoby. In April, our speaker will be Diane Herbort, with a workshop to follow the next day on crazy techniques. Participants will use a sewing machine to make a base, and then learn embroidery techniques to finish the piece. Our May program will have members bring and show their first and latest quilts and talk about their journey in quilting.

Spring Retreat—Nancy Adams reminded members that if you planned to attend, please get your room registered now since the hotel would release our block of discounted rooms on February 20, 2020.

Finishing School –The class members presented their homework assignment #6. These were well received. The next assignment number is 7.

Other announcements : Arlene Page has a friend who needs someone who can make a t-shirt quilt. Maggie Hart lost her nametag. If found, please return.

Thereafter, Refreshments were enjoyed. Show and Tell followed. The meeting was adjourned at 11:35 by Deb Spitz.

Respectfully submitted, Kath Heslep, Secretary

Stay warm!

Hello, Campers and Future Campers,

Fall Retreat is now scheduled for Nov 6-9 (a small change from the reported dates due to a hotel issue) at our usual haunt, The Hilton Garden Inn in Winchester VA. Wake up in the morning to the joy of a freshly cooked breakfast that you didn’t have to cook yourself with nothing to do but sew all day with occasional breaks for sustenance and to kibbutz what everyone else is doing. You can get up and sew as early as you please or sew as late at night as you choose. There will be games, surprises, occasional chocolate, a small and very easy project to make something very useful if you wish to participate, community service projects if you like and the usual good times and raucous laughter with friends.

I look forward to sharing these intimate moments with 30 of my closest friends. The registration form follows (page 7) and I hope you’ll join us.

Your fearless leader, Leslie

Hello Guild Presidents,

We are reaching out to guilds across Virginia to invite their members to visit the Virginia Quilt Museum. We are keenly interested in growing our membership and expanding our volunteer base.

The 2020 events calendar for the year is full of exciting exhibits and two very special events. The museum will celebrate the 25th anniversary on 1 August with Bonnie Hunter and Pat Sloan joining us for the occasion. The American Quilt Study Group (AQSG) will be holding their annual convention at the museum 9 – 13 September. These two events and our exhibits offer exquisite quilting opportunities for quilters of all experience levels. We hope to see your members at these events and for our exhibits throughout the year.

The museum is beautiful and there are many shopping and dining opportunities in the Harrisonburg area that can make for a memorable adventure. A museum representative can be made available to speak to your group if you would like to have more information and you can of course share our website link with your membership http://www.vaquiltmuseum.org/. You are encouraged to join our VQM email list and would greatly appreciate liking us on Facebook.

Please contact myself, Susan Farmer, or Heidi Haynes at [email protected] to make arrangements.

We look forward to seeing you at the museum!
