PREFACE
The 1997 International Cryogenic Materials Conference (ICMC) was held at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon, in conjunction with the Cryogenic Engineering Conference (CEC) on July 28-August 1. The cryogenic pioneering theme amidst the Pacific Northwest setting attracted over 700 participants, representing 22 countries. The logistics of the Portlandsetting facilitated interactions between conference attendees and the 36 exhibitors. The generous support of financial contributors including Cabot Performance Materials, Oxford Instruments, Intermagnetics General Corporation, Wah Chang and The National High Magnetic Field Lab enabled the planners to control the costs ofthe conference, extend support to foreign and student participants, and provide a warm atmosphere for discussion of information exchanged during the days. Northwest Natural Gas and Trimet, local cryogenic pioneers, provided natural gas-powered transportation and a technical tour oftheir LNG facilities for public transportation. In addition to the technical sessions and exhibits the assembly of experts from around the world (38% non-US attendance) allowed Specialmeetingsand cross-exchange between International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and Versailles AMAS (VAMAS) scientists.
The 1997 technical program consisted ofa wide range oftopics. Excellent plenary presentations were made by Peter Limon (Fermilab) about the plans and dreams for future accelerators, and by E. Trifon Laskaris (GE) about the new advances in magnetic resonance therapy. A focused session, organized by program committee member Bob Hawsey (Oak Ridge), highlighted the new developments in high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coated conductors. These conductors are the second generation ofHTS conductors to make impressive critical current performance at high magnetic fields, after the Bi-oxide HTS conductors, which were prominent in the program. Superconducting materials composed the majority ofthe program, with continued progress in Nb-Ti, Nb3Sn, and Nb3Al, better understanding of the BSCCO phase formation and the current-voltage characteristics, longer-Iength BSCCO tapes and wires, ac Iosses and strain effects in strands in cables, and progress in Hg- and Tl-oxide superconductors all being reported. The Student Meritorious Paper Award winner was Kathleen Amm (Florida State) for her investigation ofthe growth of Hg-oxide HTS conductors on textured meta! substrates.
Clear, warm weather persisted throughout the conference, as expected for a typical Oregon summ er. The social program was highlighted by an excursion to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and the treasures of the Gobi Desert.

EDITORIAL
Since 1954 Advances in Oyogenic Engineering has been the archival publication of papers presented at the biennial CEC/ICMC conferences. Advances in Crvogenic Engineering resides throughout the world in the I ibraries of most institutions that conduct rcsearch and development in cryogenic engineering and applied superconductivity. Thc publication inc1udes invited, unso1icited, and government-sponsored research papers in the research areas of superconductors and structura1 materials for cryogenic appl ications. A II of the papers published must (I) be presented at the conference, (2) pass the review process. and (3) report previously unpublished theoretica1 studies, reviews. or measurements of material properlies at low temperatures.
Two or more specialists review each paper and assess its value to the scicntitic community and correctness in presentation. Reviewcrsreturn their comments to the appropriate technical editor. who decides whether to accept, reject, or return the manuscript to the author for revision. Only on the positive recommendation oftwo reviewers is the paper accepted. If one review is positive and one is negative, a third independent review is solicited. Authors must makc changes deemed mandatory by the reviewers. To ensure objectivity, the names of the reviewers are withheld from the author, and from each other.
Nearly two hundred contributed and invited talks covering all aspects of cryogenic materials research were presented at the 1997 ICMC; 142 papers are published in this volume. I would like to extend my appreciation to Melinda Adamsand Kim Bass ofthe University ofWisconsin für their assistance in the conference Publications Office. On behalf ofthe Technical Editorsand myself, I would like to thank Marilyn Stieg for the skillful rewriting of several papers that, tor an assortment of reasons, could not be corrected by the authors.
