As soon as he got indoors heputtheSerpentdownonthehearthbeforethe fire.Thechildrenwatcheditandsawitslowly cometolifeagain.Thenoneofthemstooped downtostrokeit,buttheSerpentraiseditshead andputoutitsfangsandwasabouttostingthe childtodeath.SotheWoodmanseizedhisaxe, andwith onestrokecuttheSerpentintwo.Ah, said he, No gratitude from the wicked.
