DESCRIPTION

African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. AMEZ, St George’s Street, Wolverhampton. - PowerPoint PPT Presentation

TRANSCRIPT

AMEZ, St George’s Street, Wolverhampton.

• This church was purchased in 1989, although the congregation formed some twenty years earlier. Most congregants were immigrants from the West Indies and sought to retain a form of worship they had been familiar with in the Caribbean. Some members were unhappy with the way they were received in local churches.

The altar is the central focus of the church. It is placed at the front in the middle so all the congregation is focused on it.

At the altar the service is conducted by the Pastor. Holy Communion also takes place with the congregation going to the rail.

The altar is made out of wood which is common in many churches.

Music is an important form of church worship. It stems from times when they were slaves. When the church was first set up in America the congregation would sing about slave experiences. In slave times singing was also a way of communicating in secret.

This organ is a barrel organ which is very rare because they are being replaced with modern cheaper electric

organs.

These plaques were found on the back wall. They are to remember the people from that church who lost their lives in the Great War. These are not from the AMEZ church but from the Methodist church that occupied the church before them.

Decoration in the church was very plain. As a Methodist church they do not believe in grand decoration. This is because it distracts from the worship of God.

From the photo you can see there are neutral colours, no stained glass windows and the only elaboration is on the pillars.
