2008 U.S. army orchestra young artist CompetitionOn Monday, March 10, 2008, 23 high school students from the Metro DC area competed in the 3rd Annual U.S. Army Orchestra Young Artist Competition. The competition was open to strings, woodwind, brass, guitar, and percussion instrumentalists in grade 9–12.

The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” is dedicated to providing opportunities for young musicians to be rewarded and featured in professional concert settings. A premier ensemble of this organization, The U.S. Army Orchestra strives to encourage and inspire young musicians to pursue musical excellence.

Col. Thomas RoTondi, JR.

After three decades in the Army Band program at the command and staff level, in 2005 Colonel Thomas Rotondi, Jr., was named the eighth leader and commander of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” Originally from Chicago Heights, Illinois, Col. Rotondi holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Millikin University, Decatur, Illinois, and a Master of Business Administration degree in management from Golden Gate University, San Fransisco, California. He has studied conducting with John Giordano, Conductor Emeritus of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and with Eiji Oue, Music Director of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra.

The U.S. Army Orchestra is the only en-semble of its kind in the U.S. Army and serves as one of the premier elements of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” Its roster incorporates members of The U.S. Army Strings and The U.S. Army Concert Band, forming this ensemble of world-class musicians. The Army Orchestra has performed in such notable venues as Trinity Church Wall Street, New York; Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center, Alexandria, Virginia; and can be enjoyed at The U.S. Army Band’s annual holiday concert: “A Holiday Festival,” at DAR Constitution Hall, Washington, DC.

Staff Sergeant Leigh Ann Hinton hails from upstate New York. Prior to her service with the armed forces, she attended The Hartt School of Music and Ithaca College where she earned her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in vocal performance. For her graduate studies, she was the recipient of the Park Foundation Fellowship for Performance Studies at Ithaca College. She then joined The United States Navy Sea Chanters chorus where she performed for President George H. Bush’s Inauguration, and sang at the world premiere for the movie “Pearl Harbor.”

Alex Grimes, 17, began his musical studies on violin at age 8 and devoted full time to the viola beginning at 13. Currently, Alex is a second year scholarship student in the National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fel-lowship Program in Washington, DC, a scholarship student at The Settlement Music School in Philadelphia, and co-principal violist of Northern Virginia’s American Youth Philharmonic. Over the last three years, he has been awarded recognition in competitions held by many area musical organizations: the Na-tional Symphony Orchestra (NSO), Fairfax Symphony, and Washington Performing Arts Society. Alex is a student of retired NSO violist, Ramon Scavelli.

sgT. 1sT Class anTonio giUliano

Sergeant First Class Antonio Giuliano is a tenor vocalist and soloist in The U.S. Army Chorus. Originally from Pensacola, Florida, Sgt. 1st Class Giuliano joined The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in 1988. He received his musical education from Pensacola Junior College and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from College of Music at Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He has performed for heads of state, kings and queens, and presidents worldwide, and in 2004 served as a soloist at the funeral services for former President Ronald Reagan in Simi Valley, California. He has studied voice with Dr. Donald G. Wiggins of New York, New York.

maJ. PaUl BamonTe

Major Paul Bamonte, native of Washington, DC, serves as associate conductor of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” director of The U.S. Army Strings, and conductor of The U.S. Army Orchestra. Maj. Bamonte holds a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance from Shenan-doah Conservatory of Music in Winchester, Virginia, where he studied with Frances Averitt. He studied orchestral and opera conducting at Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida, under Mark Gibson. He has worked with Robert Spano, Otto Werner-Mueller, and Eugene Corporon while attending numerous international conducting symposiums.
