The sun is shining, the weather is gorgeous, andSpring Quarter is finally upon us! Keeping with thetradition of maintaining close ties with our Alumnae,weearnestlyhope that thisnewsletterwill giveyouauniqueglimpseintothefantasticyearwehavehadandeverything we have accomplished. This newsletter isorganized to showcase all thatAlpha Iotahasdone toincorporate the five areas of chapter excellence:Membership, Academics, Social, Philanthropy, andLeadershipintoourlivesasKappaDeltas.

AlphaIotawelcomed45newmembersinFall2009!BidDaybeganwithintroductionsandphotosatthehouse,wherenewmembersreceivedtheirbiddaybagsandtheirveryfirstKappaDeltat‐shirt!Fromthere,wemovedontodinneratHardRockCafe,locatedatUniversalCityWalk.Newmembersenjoyedanabundanceofdeliciousfoodanddrink,greatmusic,andavibrantatmospherewhilegettingtoknowthechapter.

Afterwards,girlshadtheopportunitytowalkalongUniversalCityWalkandtakeinanumberoflivestreetbands,kiosks,andfoodstands.ThispastFall,AlphaIotachapterheldaverysuccessfulSpiritWeek!VPMembershipColleenMeseckconductedseveralworkshops,ledteam‐buildingactivities,andcreatedoverallchapterrecruitmentgoalstohelpusprepareforFallRecruitment.Onefuneventtheentirechapter

tookpartinwasBruinBash,heldeveryyearbeforethe

startofschoolatUCLA.KappaDeltadonnedmatchingyellowshirtsandheadedtoPauleyPavilliontoseeLMFAO,afunkyelectro‐popduo,inaction!Notonlywasthiseventenjoyableforallofthegirlsbutitalsoservedasanopportunitytomeetpotentialnewmemberswhowereinterestedin

goingGreek.GirlsansweredquestionsaboutsororitylifeandpromotedPanhellenicduringthisfunnightofmusicanddancing.Ourchapterreallywantedtopromoteandfocusonphilanthropyduringthisyear'sSpringRecruitment.ThedaychairsheadingthePhilanthropyroundofrecruitmentdecidedtocreateabulletinboarddevotedentirelytoourShamrockevent,aseven‐on‐sevenflagfootballtournamentheldon‐campusattheintramuralfields.Theydisplayedthet‐shirtthatplayersandthe

chapterreceived,aswellaspicturesfromboththe

tournamentandCoaches'Night,anightwheregirlswhowerecoachingpaintedencouragingpostersandsignsfortheirteams.Thisboardnotonlybrightenedupthedownstairshallwaybutalsoservedasanexcellenttalkingpointduringthehousetoursthatweregivenontheseconddayofrecruitment!

SpringRecruitmentwasagreatsuccessthisyear!AlphaIota'shardworkpaidoffand

ourchapterwelcomed13newmembersinApril.BidDaywasheldatthehouseandincludedasong‐writingchallenge,wheregroupsofintermingledactivesandnewmembershadtoworktogethertore‐writethelyricsofpopularsongstoatuneaboutKD.Afterwards,newmembersenjoyedSprinklescupcakesandaperformancebyBruinHarmony,anon‐campusmen'sAcapellagroup.

SisterhoodhasalwaysbeenanimportantaspectofsororitylifetothegirlsofKappaDelta.Althougheachmemberisbusywithhomework,clubs,sports,andotherextracurricularactivities,thegirlsalwaysfindtimetospendwithoneanotherwhetherit’sgoingouttothemoviestowatchthenewestchickflickorgoingoutoncoffeedatesintoWestwood.KappaDeltasarecompetitiveinspiritandpassionateaboutsisterhoodbonds,sotostartoffthequarterwehadanightofcrazychubbybunny,wheregirlsgottotestjusthowmanymarshmallowstheywerecapableofgettingintotheirmouthswhilestillbeingaudiblewhentheysaidchubbybunny.Thatalongwithanobstaclecourse,thegirlshadalotoffunmakingmemorieswithoneanother,becausewithamouthfullofmarshmallowsthereisnothingtodobutlaughandenjoyit.DuringtheendofJanuary,acouplesistersputonacoachesnighttogetthechapterpumpedupfortheShamrocksflagfootballtournament.Sisterssplitupintogroupsanddecoratedvibrantsignsfortheirfavoritefraternity/sorority.Thegirlsgotreallyintothedecoratingandhadanawesometimetryingtooneuptheteamsnexttothem.Afewweekslatertheyenjoyedarelaxingnightofboardgameswhilegettingtoknowallofthenewmembers!ThegirlsofAlphaIotaareextremelyenthusiasticabouttheirfavoriteTVshowsandinthemidstofthecrazyweekofSecondDegreeandInitiationthegirlstookatriptowatchatapingofAmericanIdol.Thegirlsgottositfrontrowintheaudienceasthetop10guysserenadedtheminthehopesofgettingtheirvotetomakeittothetop.Inadditiontothisexcitingoutingtoseethisamazingshow,thegirlsalsoparticipatedinClinique’sFreshFacesTour.Thegirlshelpedpromotetheeventthroughoutcampusandthentheythemselvesparticipatedbygettingtheirmakeupandhairdonebyspecialists.TheylookedGorgeous!!

WhenIcametoUCLA,IreallydidnotknowwhatIwantedtodowithmyselffor

thenextfouryears.ThoughIreallydidnotthinkIwasthe“sororitytype”,everyonetoldmeIneededtoatleastgothroughtherecruitmentprocessandseewhathappens.Onmyfirstdayofrush,IhadnoideahowIwasgoingtonarrowmyoptionsdown.However,bytheendoftheday,IknewIwantedtobepartofitall.

ItwashardcomingtocollegewhereIdidn’tknowanyone.Ihavehadthesame

bestfriendssincefifthgradesohavingtomakeallnewfriendswasareallyscarything.OnceIjoinedKappaDeltathough,IhadmorefriendsthanIcouldeverimagine.Ilovethateachandeveryoneofmysisters,thoughtheyallhavesuchdifferentpersonalities,aresounderstandinganddowntoearth.Noneofthemareeverfakeorstuckupandtheyaresoeasytogetalongwith.WheneverIhaveaproblemorIamupsetaboutsomething,IknowmysistersarethereandIcancompletelytrustthem.That’sdifficulttofindinsuchalargeschoolsuchasUCLA.

OneofmyfavoritethingsaboutKappaDeltaisthevariety

ofpersonalitiesinourhouse.Eventhougheveryoneissodifferent,weareallenthusiasticaboutoursisterhoodanditisanamazingbondthatmostpeopleoutsideofGreeklifewouldnotbeabletounderstand.AnotherthingIloveaboutKappaDeltaisthatbesideshavingagreattimetogether,therearealwaysgirlswhoIcangotowhenIneedacademichelporadvice.TherearealwaysgirlswhohavetakenthesameclassesasIam,orthatsharethesamemajorasmeandtheyarealwayswillingtoanswerquestionsandhelpinanywaynecessary.

Inthefuture,Ireallyhopetobeoncouncil.Iwanttobetterthechapterandbeabletogivebackinreturnforallofthethingsithasgivenme.Notonlythis,Ireallywanttofollowintheoldermembers’footstepstowelcomefuturenewmembersandbethereforallofmysistersasafriendandaleader. Lookingbackatitnow,itishardtoimaginemyfirstquarterwithoutKappaDelta.RushingwasprobablyoneofthebestdecisionsIhavemadeinmylifebecauseifIhadn’t,IwouldbehavingacompletelydifferentcollegeexperiencethanIamnow.IhavemetsomanyamazingyoungwomenandIamsothankfulthatKappaDeltahasbroughtallofustogether.

Asalways,KappaDeltaAlphaIotahasfullycommitteditselftopromotingandachievingthehigheststandardsofacademicexcellence.ThispastFall2009wehadanaveragehouseGPAof3.309andranked8outof14ontherow.Wewerewellabovetheall‐women’saverage,whichfellat3.209.MeganAlcock,CarlyAltman,JulieAnderson,AllyAndreen,KatBorghi,BrittanyChiang,AllisonGrandi,KristinO’Neil,KristinaSidrak,andNicoleWongallearneda4.0GPAduringFall.Thispastquarterwehavecontinued

withmanyoftheprogramsAlphaIotahasfoundtobesuccessful.EveryMondaynightatdinner,the

AcademicExcellenceChairhandsoutsmart

cookiestothosewhohavesentintheirownachievementsorhavebeenrecognizedbyothersinthehouse.TheChaircallsoutnamesinfrontofthewholechapterandeveryoneapplaudsforthegirlreceivingthecookie.Thisyearwehavestartedtoholdthenewmemberacademicsuccessseminarinconjunctionwiththenewmemberretreat.Itisimportanttointroducenewmemberstoouracademicexcellencegoalsandrequirementsasearlyaspossiblesotheyareawareofthechapter’sexpectations.Duringfifthweek(theweektraditionallyknownforitsheavymidtermload)weplannedamidtermstudynightcompletewithsnacksandaquietplacetostudy.Attheendofthequarterwithfinalsquicklyapproaching,thechapterheldafinalsstudynight.Thisstudynightisjustlikethemidtermstudynight,butfocusedonfinalsratherthanmidterms.Again,foodandaninvitingstudyenvironmentwereprovided.OurAcademicExcellenceProgramhasproventobesuccessful.Wemovedupintheall‐sororityrankingandarewellabovetheallwomen’saverageGPAat

UCLA.Thedistributionofsmartcookiesalwaysprovidespositiveencouragementtothegirls.Publicrecognitionsbypeerscreatesapositivefeelingandencouragesgirlstostrivefortheirbest.Plus,whodoesn’tenjoyadeliciouscookienowandagain?Theacademicsuccessseminarforthenewmembersalwaysstartsournewestgirlsoffontherightpath.

Ournewmemberprogramingeneralhasbeen

increasinglysuccessful,andtheacademicaspecthasfollowedthatsametrend.GirlsrealizethatbeingamemberinKappaDeltameansconveyingexcellenceinallaspectsofcollegelife.Attheseminaractivememberssharedstudytips,classrecommendations,andprofessorwarningstothenewmembers.Thisinteractiveprocessalwaysshowsgreatsuccessbecausethenewgirlslovegettingadvicefrommemberswhohavealreadygonethroughtheprocesstheyareparticipatinginnow.Midtermandfinalstudynightsarealwayspopularevents.Freestudysnacksandaquietstudyenvironmentaremuchappreciatedandsetapositiveexample.Byprovidinggirlswithaplacetostudyandfoodtokeepthemalert,weareencouragingsuccessfulstudyingtotakeplaceandemphasizinghowimportantacademicsaretoKappaDelta.ThisSpringQuartertheScholarshipBanquetwillbeheld.MembersareencouragedtoinviteprofessorsandTAstheshareaneveningofacademicrecognitionanddeliciousfood.Atthiseventscholarshippearls,thehighestacademichonor,willbehandedout.Otherprizeswillbehandedoutaswelltorecognizethosegirlswhohavetrulyworkedtheirhardestallyear.ThebanquetisawonderfulwaytorewardtheyoungwomenofKappaDeltaAlphaIotawhohavecommittedtosuchahighstandardofexcellence.

Academics

Mygoalasthisyear’snewVicePresidentofOperationsistoeffectivelyscheduleavarietyofworkshopsthatfollowtheKappaDeltaprogrammingrequirementswhileatthesametimeservingtheneedsofthemembers.IthasbeenaconstantgoalthisyeartorestructurethewayworkshopsareconductedtousethemtomatchtheinterestsofthechapterandtoaddresstheissuesfacingthewomenofAlphaIota.

TheKappaDeltaalumnaenetwork,thecommunityandthegreaterLosAngelesareacomposeawealthofresourcesthatoffertremendouspotentialforworkshopsthatcaneducate,inspire,andenergizetheAlphaIotamembers.Wehavebeentryingtobetterutilizethoseresourcestopresentworkshopstothechapterthatreflectthediversityofoursororityandcommunityasawhole.Sofarthisyearwehave

enjoyedpresentationsfromvariousorganizations.OurveryownUCLAGreekadvisorvisitedtheAlphaIotachaptertospeakonbothriskmanagementandtheroleKappaDeltaplayswithintheGreekcommunity;CarolField,arenownedpsychotherapist,spokeonrelationshipsandtheriskyoungwomenfacewhentheyareinvolvedinanunhealthyrelationship;andarepresentativefromPreventChildAbuseAmericasharedinformationaboutthistremendousphilanthropicorganizationwhilemembersofAlphaIotawhohavepersonallyexperiencedchildabuse,inoneformoranother,weregiventheopportunitytosharetheirtouching

storiestothechapter. Alongwithoutsidespeakerscomingtopresenttothechapter,therearealsocertainworkshopssetasidewiththepurposeofsupportingthechapterduringsomeespeciallystressfultimes.Forexample,everyfifthandtenthweekofeachquarter,thereisa“Midterm/FinalStudyNight”.Thesestudynightsallowthechaptertofocusontheirschoolworkalongwithanymidtermsorfinalstheymayhaveduringthattime.

Therearealsoseasonalworkshopswhichhelpthechapterbetterprepareforanyupcomingbigeventsincludingformalrecruitment,officialvisits,andevenourphilanthropicevent“Shamrock.”

Workshopstopicselectionisbasedonachapterwidesurveythatasksmemberstoevaluate

thestrengthofpastworkshopsandgivesuggestionsforfutureworkshops.Basedontheresultsofthispastsurvey,weareplanningworkshopsonresumebuilding,self‐defense/awarenessandsustainabilitywithinourownchapterhouse.WorkshopsareanincredibleopportunityforAlphaIotamemberstogainhelpfulinformationfromlocalandcampus‐basedorganizationsandtonetworkbothinsideandoutsidetheKDcommunity.

Thisyear,theAlphaIotaChapterofKappaDeltahostedits7thannual“WhiteRoseBowl”,a7‐on‐7flagfootballtournamentontheintramuralfields.Heldontheintramuralfieldsoncampus,oureventsupportedPreventChildAbuseCaliforniaandtheChildreninNeedFund.StudentsrepresentingtheentireGreekcommunityofUCLAspentthedaylearningaboutchildabuseprevention,eatingdinner,andcompetinginandwatchingflagfootballgames.

VarioussponsorssuchasCaliforniaPizzaKitchen,ParkLaneJewelry,AMPRadio97.1,Powerade,Ralph’s,In‐N‐Out,andMonstergavegenerousdonationsinsupportofourShamrockevent.Forthefirsttime,ourchapterreachedouttonewstudentgroupsthroughouttheUCLAcommunityandthewinnerofthefraternitybracketwasateamwhoparticipatedinaPanhellenicphilanthropyeventforthefirsttime.

WeimplementedourgoalofreachingouttothegreaterUCLAcommunitybyencouragingparticipationfromnon‐IFCandPanhellenicorganizations.Thewinnerofthemen’sbracketwasafraternityfromtheNationalAssociationofLatinoFraternalOrganizationsandfirsttimeparticipatingteam‐GammaZetaAlpha.Nextyear,ourchapterwillstrivetocontinueinourpursuittoincreaseparticipationandpublicawarenessoncampusbyreachingouttomorediversegroups.Additionally,ourchapterincorporatedcreativenewpublicrelationstacticssuchastheCalifornia

PizzaKitchenFundraiser,Shamrocksunglasses,andhavingGirlScoutsrowwalkingwithus.Nextyear,theAlphaIotachapterwillcontinuewithourendeavorstopromoteShamrockasoneofthebiggestphilanthropyeventsontheUCLAcampus.

DanceMarathonatUCLAisa26‐hourfundraisereventthatraisesfundsandawarenessforthePediatricAIDSpandemic.AllfundsraisedbenefittheElizabethGlaserPediatricAIDSFoundation,oneoftheleadingfoundationsinAIDSresearch,andtwocampsforchildrenlivinginfectedwithoraffectedbyHIV/AIDS‐‐OneHeartlandandProjectKindle.Inadditiontopayingforchildrentospendaweekatsummercamp,thefundsraisedforthelattertwoorganizationsallowsHIVpositivechildrentotelltheirstoriesathighschoolsallacrossAmericatohelperadicatetheAIDSstigma.

Atthisyearsevent,AlphaIotaexcelledinbothhavingtwoparticipantsoncommittee,LuzKumpelandCourtneyHawker,aswellashavinga15‐girlteamofdancers.Committeemembersworkedfortwoquarterstopromotetheevent,receivecorporatedonations,andplanningfundraisingeventstohelpdancersraisemoney.Additionally,mostallmembersofthesororityeithersupportedtheirsistersviafiscaldonationsorbyvisitingtheeventforafewhoursas'moralers’.

DuringDanceMarathon,UCLAstudentscommittostayingontheirfeetfor26hoursafterraisingaminimumof$208perparticipant.Thoughanarduouschallenge,allofourdancerswereabletomakeitthroughthemarathonduetothesupportofoursisterhood.AlphaIota’scontributionshelpedUCLADanceMarathonraisearecord‐breaking$407,223.73total!NootherDanceMarathonatUCLAhadraisedover$400,000before,soitwasincredibleforourchaptertobesuchapartofthisrecord‐breakingevent.Anumberofourgirlsparticipatedas‘moralers’,participatingintheeventforthree‐hour(orsometimeslonger)shiftstosupportour‘dancers’bybringingthemwater,snacks,popsicles,andfreshfacesfilledwithenthusiasm.Allofourdancerswereabletoendurethe26hours,andwererewardedbytheopportunitytointeractwithsomeofthecampersfromKindleandHeartland.DanceMarathonatUCLAwasanincredibleopportunitytoraisemoneyforanincrediblecauseandgetthroughahugechallengewiththesupportofoursisterhood.

Oneday.Onenight.Onecommunity.Onefight.ThisistheRelayforLife

motto.Relayisa24‐houreventthattakesplaceonceayear,andthisyearittookplaceatUCLA.Itisalife‐changingeventforeveryoneinvolved,celebratingsurvivors,rememberingthosewe’velost,andfightingcancerbyraisingmoneyfor

theAmericanCancerSociety.TheAmericanCancerSocietyfundscutting‐edgeresearch,provideseducationandfollow‐upcareforpatient,andprovidesfreeprogramstoimprovethelivesofmany.

UCLA’sDrakeStadiumheldover1,500peopleonApril17‐18thisyear.AlphaIotahadateamof40girls,almostdoublefromlastyear!Asateam,weraised$1,400,andtheeventasawholehasraised$132,000andstillcountingmakingusthefirstplaceuniversityinCalifornia.

NadiaFrancesandChristinaBrownwerebothonRelayforLifecommitteethisyear,

puttinginendlesshoursoftimeandenergyplanningthisamazingevent.The

eventhadanumberofperformancesfromAcapellagroupstodancers.TheLengthsofBeautyprogramwascuttinghairfordonationtocancerpatients,andNadiahad11inchesofherhaircutoff. Therewasaceremonyat9pmonSaturdaynightforthoselostandthesurvivorsandAlphaIotacelebratedthelivesofthethreesurvivorswehavewhocouldn’tbethereduetograduationorabroadprograms.

Nextyear,AlphaIotastrivestohaveevenmoreparticipantsandraiseevenmoremoney.Ourmanycontributionshelpedthiscausegreatly,andwe’reexcitedtoseewhatwewilldonextyear.

TheAlphaIotaChapterofKappaDeltahasputgreateffortthisyeartoincreasetheirphilanthropiceffortswithintheUCLAcommunityandthroughoutthegreaterLosAngelesarea.Fromsupportingallofthephilanthropyeventsofotherhouses,tosubstantiallyraisingthebarfortheirannualShamrockflagfootballtournament,torevampingthestructureoftheirGirlScoutprogram,thegirlsofAlphaIotahavedemonstratedgreatprideintheirchapter’sdedicationtothecommunitywhilestrengtheningtheirsisterhoodbond! In2010alone,KappaDeltaparticipatedinPiKappaPhi’sAcousticCoffeeNight,AlphaEpsilonPi’s“HopeforHaiti”drive,TriDelta’sPancakeDinner,andAlphaDeltaChiandAlphaGammaOmega’sKickballTournament.Additionally,thegirlssupportedPhiSigmaRho;UCLA’sengineeringsorority,intheirWatergunTournamentforthefirsttime.DeltaTauDeltaheldtheirannualDeltaQueenPageanttobenefittheCityofHopeCancerResearchCenterandoneoftheKDsisters;DaniellePineirawonthetitleofDeltaQueen2010!Thechapterwastheretosupportherandtheirspiritmadeupalargeportionofthepointsthathelpedhertowin! ContinuingwiththelegacyofKappaDeltasbeingheavilyinvolvedinextracurricularactivities,thisyearmembersofAlphaIotavigorouslysoughttoexcelbothinclass,oncampus,andinthecommunity.Despitethechallengesthatbeingafull‐timestudentpresents,KDsarealwaysseekingtobecomemoreinvolvedinallthattheydo.ThisyearAlphaIotaseagerlypursuedleadershipopportunitieswithinthehouse,theUCLAGreeksystem,andthecampuscommunity.

KatyLunny,SheevaHalati,AntoinetteBrou,andKristinaSidrakareallmembersofSAA,UCLA'sStudentAlumniAssociation.SAAworksonbehalfoftheUCLAAlumniAssociationtoconnectstudents,alumni,andtheUniversity.Eachyear,SAAmembersplancountlessofficialUCLAevents;includingBlue&GoldWeek(therivalryrelatedfestivitiesleadinguptotheUSCvs.UCLAfootballgame),SpringSing(UCLA'sannualmusicaleventfeaturingstudentperformances),Dinnerfor12Strangers(aprogramwhichinvitesstudentstomeetacross‐sectionofBruins),andInterviewWithaBruin(eventsthatseektobringAlumniandstudentsintoclosercontactfornetworkingpurposes).

WehaveanumberofnewlyinitiatedmembersofOrderofOmega,anallGreekacademichonorssocietyrequiringeachmembertohaveaGPAof3.2orhigher.AlphaIotaisproudtohaveahighnumberofmemberswhoarealreadyinvolvedinthissociety.Membersparticipateincommunityserviceprojectsthroughouttheyear,areeligibletoapplyforexclusivescholarships,andcontinuetoencourageacademiccommitmentwithintheGreekcommunity.

AlphaIotaisalsoexcitedtoberepresentedonthePanhellenic

ExecutiveBoard,withoneofourowngirlsselectedthisyear.Afterconsideringseveralapplicationsfromallhouses,MiaVarnerwaschosentobeVPProgramming.ColleenHillcurrentlyservesasourPanhellenicDelegate,servingastheliaisonbetweenPanhellenicinitiativesandtheChapter.

Recently,KappaDeltashavereceivedsignificantrecognitionon

campusforbeingoutstandingBruins.LuzKumpelranforUndergraduateStudentAssociationCouncilPresidentandSharonWuforFacilitiesCommissioner.HavingtwoKappaDelta’srunforoneofthethirteenprestigiousandcovetedspotsonStudentgovernmentwassimplyamazing!PastPresident,AnnieGeffroywasrecentlyselectedasthe2009‐2010PresidentoftheYearatthePanhellenicScholarshipBanquet.KappaDelta

AllyAndreen,oneofthethreefinalistsforGreekWomanoftheYear,hasbeenselectedtogivethe2010

Asofthisfallquarter,AlphaIotareceivedseveralupgradestothehouseoverthe

summer. Theflooringonthefirstfloorhasbeencompletelyredonetoreplacethecarpetwithwoodandtileflooring.Thelivingroom,parlor,andoutdoorpatiowerealsorefurnishedforthenewschoolyear.

Thebasementhasundergonemultiplechangesthroughoutthelastyear.Theformerchapterroomhasbeenturnedintoafullyequippedstudyloungewithnewdesksandcomfyofficechairs.Ithasbeenaverypopularplaceforgirlstostudy,evenlive‐outs.

Winterquarterbroughtthemuchanticipatedcardioroomtothehouse.Becauseofitspopularity,asignupsystemevenhadtobecreated.Weareuniqueinthefactthatwearetheonlyhouseontherowtohaveanythingsimilartothecardioroom.

Wehaveinputanewsecuritysystemintothehousetoensurethesafetyofthegirlslivingin.Ratherthenhaveakeypadwithacode,wenowhaveafingerprintrecognizablesystem.Wehavearecordnumberofgirlswhowanttoliveinnextyearduetoalloftheupgradesthathavebeenmade,andlookforwardtoanypossiblenewupdatesthatwillbehappeningtothehouse.

Housing Improvements

AlphaIotaexperiencedpossiblyitsgreatestfallandwinterquarteryetduetotheexceptionalquality,variety,andamountofeventsthattookplace.Thesocialcalendarrangedextensivelyfromcreativelythemedraidstomurdermysterydinnerstoclassic

formals.Raidssuchas“GuysandDolls,”“Wild,WildWest”and“OldHollywood,”casualdinnerswithfraternities,lasertag,crushparties,andmuchmorefilledAlphaIota’scalendarduringthefall,winter,andspringquarters.DuringfallquarterweheldourannualPresentsceremonywithaformaltofollow.EachyearwepresentournewestmembersofSpringandFallRecruitmenttoparents,family,alumnae,fellowcollegiatemembers,andfriends.Eachnewmembergetsintroducedtoeveryonebyanactivemembersuchastheir“bigsis”thathasbecomeclosetothemandcansharesomethinguniqueorspecialaboutthem.Itisagreatwaytowelcomeallournewmemberstotheirnewfamily.

Afterwardswecelebratedwithaformalatabeautifulbeachsidehotel.OneofourbelovedandactivelyinvolvedseniorsnamedStephanieDoylewascrownedMissKappaDelta,alongstandingtraditionawardedtoamemberwhohasgoneaboveandbeyondtheaverageinvolvementasamember.Inwinter,guysfromeveryfraternityviedforourattentionatourmostanticipatedeventoftheyear,theDaggermanCrushparty.TheKDssoughttofindafraternitymemberwhobestrepresentstheidealsofKappaDelta.Eachyear,weinvitefraternitymenfromeveryfrattoourCrushparty.Afterwards,weselectfifteenofthefinestgentlementocometoaMondaynightdinnerandgiveaspeechorperformancetodemonstratewhytheyarethebestrepresentationofKappaDeltaideals.Followingthat,wenarrowitdowntotencandidates,whoattendourWhiteRoseFormalandonceagain,giveaspeechorperformancetowinoverourhearts.Thisyear’sperformancesrangedfrompoemstodancing,andincludeduniquedisplaysofaffection,suchapersonalizedlyricstopopularsongs.SergioQuilici,aleaderandactivememberofPiKappaPhi,wascrownedDaggerman.WehavemanymoreeventsplannedforSpringQuarter,butourmostrecentwasamurdermysterydinneratKappaDeltawiththeboysfromDeltaTauDeltafraternity.Thenightwasthemed“Roaring20’s”andbeganwithacateredsit‐downdinnerandmocktails.Everyonelookedlikethe“cat’smeow”intheirbestzootsuitsandflapperdresses.Theeveningwasasuccess,andNickiKlein,ourownsocialchair,turnedouttobethemurderer!Thankfully,theLAPDkindlyletNickioffwithawarning.AlphaIotalooksforwardtoanotherexcitingandfun‐filledyearaheadwithmanymoreupdatestocome!

Ceremony.However,itwasmuchmorethanawayofshowingpotentialnewmembersaglimpseofoursisterhood.ItwasalsoawayofreflectingonherKappaDelta

experienceasawhole.

Threeyearsago,Iwouldneverhavebeenabletostandupinfrontofallofyouandmakethisspeech–especiallytoagroupofgirlsasbeautifulandintelligentasyouall.Icameinascared17‐year‐old‐thebestIcansayisthatIcouldfakeconfidenceifnecessary.Butafter4daysofrecruitment,thatfaçadeiswornterriblythin.Itwasonthisday,withmyguarddown,thatImetmybigsister,Marisa,andfinallywasabletomakethedecisiontojoinKappaDelta.Marisa,orasImorelovinglycallher,Gobbs,isconfident,loyal,andadownrightgoodtime–shewaseverythingIwantedtobe.Withherguidanceandsupport,IwaseasilyintegratedintothesisterhoodIwasseekingtofindatUCLA.

ButasIsoonrealized,everygirlinthishousehassomecharacteristicthatIdesire,somethingthathashelpedmedevelopintoapersonthatIamproudof.First,thereismytwin,Melissa,oneofmyfirstfriendsinthehouse.Shetaughtmethat,whileImayneverbethegirlinthehulaskirtandcoconuttopataraid,itisokaytobeoutrageousandthecenterofattentionsometimes.Andthenthereismadamepresident,AnnieGeffroy.Iswearthedaywewalkedintothisplace,shewasdeterminedtobepresident.Overthepastthreeyears,Ihaveseenherputcountlesshours,afewtears,andsomuchloveintothishouse.Doyletaughtmethatawellplaced“that’swhatshesaid”isappropriateatanytime.JenandShasta,yougirlsarethebestlittlesIcouldeveraskfor.IswearyoubothhaveESPthewayyoujustknowwhenIneedahugoranoteofencouragement.YouarethesistersIneverhadinmyrealfamily.Andmypuppy,Mallory,oneofthebestlistenersIknow.Sheismysecretkeeperandtaughtmethat,sometimes,thebestthingtosayisnothingatall.

TomyPC08babies–yougirlsmeantheworldtome.YoursmilingfacesgotmethroughoneofthetoughestquartersatUCLAforme.Youembracedme,aswellasthechapter,withopenmindsandfullhearts.TheenthusiasmyoushowedforKappaDeltareinvigoratedmyloveforthehouse.IwassupposedtocomeuphereandtalkaboutmyexperienceatKappaDelta,butwhenIthoughtaboutit,therewasnowaytoformetogenericallydescribemyfouryearshere.Eachgirlinthisroomhasaddedtomyexperienceandchangedmylife.Whichbringsmetoyougirls.Todayisthedayyouchoosewhowillchangeyourlife,andwhoselifeyouwillchange.IhopeyoumakethesamedecisionIdid,butwhateveryouchoose,Ihopeyoualwaysstriveforthatwhichishonorable,beautiful,andhighestinallwalksoflife.Carrythatwithyoualways,andyouwillneverbeledastray.
