APOPO trains African giant pouched rats (Cricetomys

gambianus) to utilize their exceptional sense of smell

in humanitarian detection efforts. It takes nine months

to fully train a ‘HeroRAT’ and they can live up to eight

years.

These intelligent rats are socialized from a young age, and then

taught to detect a particular scent through a combination of click

training and food rewarding. APOPO currently trains rats for

landmine detection or tuberculosis screening.

APOPO aims to build capacity through job creation and skill-

sharing, thereby encouraging local communities to take action in

an effort to help solve the humanitarian challenges they face.

THE GLOBAL PROBLEM

Tuberculosis (TB) is a widespread disease. 1.7 million people diefrom TB each year. Only 50% of the patients with TB are diag-

nosed. Left untreated, a person with active TB can infect 10-15

new people each year. A faster, more accurate diagnostic tech-

nology is needed to help curb the spread of this deadly disease.

TUBERCULOSIS

SCREENING

THE APOPO SOLUTIONTrained HeroRATs can quickly and accurately sniff out TB in

human sputum samples. In Tanzania , APOPO offers second-line

screening to our partner hospitals, which has increased new case

detection rates by over 40 percent.

Our rats can evaluate 40 sputum samples in just seven minutes,

equal to what a skilled lab technician will do in a full day’s work.

THE GLOBAL PROBLEMLandmines pose a structural barrier to development and eco-

nomic growth, long after war ends. Innocent children and adults

are injured or killed by landmines every day. Developing com-

munities remain dependent on imported expertise to address the

complex problems of landmine detection and clearance of sus-

pected areas. Detection of these devices is difficult, dangerous,

costly and time-consuming.

LANDMINE DETECTION

THE APOPO SOLUTIONTrained HeroRATs can quickly and accurately detect the location

of landmines. Two handlers using APOPO’s mine detection rats

can cover 200 square meters of suspected minefield in less than

1.5 hours. This would take one full day using metal detectors.

Our HeroRATs offer a cost-effective alternative demining tech-

nology for low-resource settings.
