Welcome to April at St. Helena School!
Prayer for April
My Lord, I thank
thee for the
wisdom and love
that is spoken
through the lives
of strong men
and women.
Grant that I may
be willing to learn
of them, and
gladly serve where
I am needed,
remembering that
thou art Lord of
all. Amen.
St. Helena School prides itself on being a “Catholic Community of Caring” School. This means that our students and staff make extra efforts to demonstrate that they “care”, both within our school community and outside of it. Update: April 10-16 is National Volunteer Week See Ms. Davis for volunteer opportunities with We Volunteer Now. Thanks for your support! Please stay posted for future updates and projects as they become organized. Together, we can create a caring atmosphere and foster the Catholic Community of Caring within our school and community. Sincerely, St. Helena Community of Caring
A Prayer in Spring
by Robert Frost
Oh, give us pleasure in
the flowers to-day;
And give us not to think
so far away
As the uncertain
harvest; keep us here
All simply in the
springing of the year.
Oh, give us pleasure in
the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day,
like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in
the happy bees,
The swarm dilating
round the perfect trees.
And make us happy in
the darting bird
That suddenly above the
bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts
in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in
mid air stands still.
For this is love and
nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved
for God above
To sanctify to what far
ends He will,
But which it only
needs that we fulfill.

It is very important that you phone the school if your child(ren) is going to be late for
school or away for an illness or medical appointment. If a student is late they must come
to the office through the front door and check in. School bell rings at 8:35 am and
attendance is taken at 8:40 am. If phoning in an absence before school hours please leave
a message on the answering machine. The office number is 403-500-2049.

“It won’t happen to my child” is what many parents feel about drug use. Yet all too often, today’s kids are experimenting with drugs. Here are some facts on drug use you should know: 12 is the average age for first use of alcohol Alcohol addiction in children can happen within only 6-18 months. Marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in Canada. AADAC is now called Youth Addiction Services (403) 297-4664 Resources through Youth Addiction Services are free of charge and can be accessed on the AHS website: www.albertahealthservices.ca- Health Information; Diseases & Conditions,
Located at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, the Family & Community Resource Centre is one of the essential components of the Alberta Health Services and helps to promote Family Centered Care in child health services. The Family & Community Resource Centre provides a comfortable and supportive environment where families, service providers, and community members can find reliable child health information, receive support, access child health education, and connect with community resources. The Education Calendar is an online listing of the education activities provided by the Community Education Service (CES) and its community partners. All students are expected to share their Brightspace (D2L) username and passwords with their parents so that
you can monitor progress and assignment grades. Our school webpage (www.cssd.ab.ca/sthelena) contains
important links and information – updated often! Important events are pushed out on Twitter
(@sthelena_ccsd). All Twitter information is repeated on our school’s web page.
When you are dealing with hundreds of students coming to school in the morning and leaving at dismissal,
the school parking lot can be a very chaotic place. Student safety is always a concern for school staff, but keep-
ing children safe in the parking lot requires the cooperation of everyone – from school staff to parents and the
students themselves.
Here are a few safety tips that drivers should observe when dropping children off at school and picking them up: Obey the speed limit and traffic rules Be courteous to other drivers Remind students to look both ways in the parking lot, even though it is not a street Students should not run or play in the parking lot Parents should respect school staff who enforce traffic rules as well as bus drivers who are picking up stu-
dents The new skateboard park that has opened on the corner of Centre St and 64th Avenue has been very popular! We remind students and parents that this is OFF SCHOOL GROUNDS! The staff do not supervise this area, and students who do not have off campus privileges are expected to stay on school property. If your son/daughter is going to the skate park, please invest in appropriate safety equipment (helmet, wrist guards, etc.) and be clear that you expect them to be worn during skating.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ HIGH SCHOOL REGISTRATION: We survived High School registration! The good news is that all Grade 9 students will be heading off to High School this fall! For students attending Notre Dame High School, meet the T.A. will be held on May 26, 2016 Time 6:30pm. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Ways to Help Your Teen Stress Less Not all teenage stress is related to traumatic events. Sometimes your adolescent may be stressed out from a problem with friends, too much homework or an overly busy schedule at school or extracurricular activities. Here are some ways to help minimize stressors: Check in with them regularly. Be sure to always know what is going on with your adolescent by asking about their day, their friends and their feelings. Do not assume they have nothing to say just because they are not saying it. Sometimes they just need to be asked. Asking questions and knowing how you can help are the best ways to reduce stress in your adolescent's life. Cut back on the fun. Too many extracurricular activities at once can overwhelm teens. They need time to relax and do nothing, which can lead to more creativity and less stress. Promote healthy eating, exercise and sleep. For children, adolescents, and adults, proper nutrition and regular exercise can go a long way to feeling more relaxed. Both have been proven to fight stress and boost en-ergy. Teens should be trying to get 8-10 hours of sleep a night. Sleep deprivation makes it very challenging for them to regulate emotions and learn. Create a schedule. Having a regular, reliable schedule can help your teen feel more organized. Have a fami-ly calendar up on the wall where all events are listed so that everybody in the house knows when things are going on. This allows everyone to get prepared in their own way and to not be surprised by events they did not know about. Take off the pressure. Teens often feel a lot of stress because of the pressures they feel are put on them by their parents or teachers. While it's good to encourage them to do well in school, sports or life, try not to make them feel like you loving them depends on how well they do. Be sure to tell them that it does not matter what the outcome is, as long as they put forth their best effort. Learn to relax. The benefits of relaxation breathing or zoning out to music are good to learn early on in life. Figuring out what relaxes your adolescent now can help keep them grounded for the inevitable stresses of life later on. There are some helpful apps that can be used to teach your teen to relax; MindShift, Breathe2Re-lax and CBT-iCoach Avoid caffeine and sugar. Too much sugar or caffeine can create anxiety, which can lead to more stress. Try to and do away with these ingredients in your adolescent's diet (particularly energy drinks if they consume them). While you will not be able to eliminate all stress in your adolescent's life, there are things you can do to decrease the amount of stress he or she deals with regularly and do what you can to help them learn to man-age their stress.
