ARIS Platform for Process ExcellenceThis document is intended for administrators who want to gain an overview of possible ARIS scenarios andrequire a basis for planning their hardware and software requirements.
With ARIS Platform for Process Excellence (ARIS Platform), you have a product range for documenting, ana-lyzing, simulating, controlling, and optimizing company-wide and inter-business processes in both LANs andWANs. For example, users all over the world can access and edit enterprise models. Depending on the num-ber of accessing users, different levels can be configured that support even a large multi-user environmentwith several hundred users. Of course, the integrity of firewall architectures is also preserved.
ARIS Platform is divided into four areas. Each area contains customized products designed to perform specif-ic tasks.
ARIS Platform provides all the tools for the Business Process Management cycle that companies need to man-age a culture of continuous change. These tools can be used to manage more than just the operationalprocesses - they can be applied to the process of Business Process Management itself. ARIS Platform sup-ports this process as it is an operational tool for managing business processes. All relevant target groups with-in the company are involved, including the organizational department and management, operating and ITdepartments, as well as the controllers.
Fig. 1:ARIS Platform forProcess Excellence
Implementing new business strategies requires that besides being flexible in terms of their business process-es, companies are also able to transfer process optimization and innovation to the world of IT systems:Aligning Business Processes and IT.
ARIS Platform can seamlessly link business and IT. With its highly scaleable and combinable product range,ARIS Platform offers solutions for the entire business process lifecycle – from Web-based description, analy-sis, and optimization of business processes through to software engineering, SAP integration and continuousprocess controlling.
IDS Scheer promises to support each customer in every aspect of the BPM cycle. Honoring this promise interms of software is the task of ARIS Platform. With ARIS Platform, companies can set up individual architec-tures via the Web, structure their business processes faster, publish them and implement them in executableinformation systems.

System White Paper
The main ARIS Platform products are briefly described and classified below.
In principle, BPM should begin with the definition and implementation of corporate strategy, followed by con-tinuous target system monitoring. With ARIS BSC, companies achieve a consistent implementation of their cor-porate strategy from KPIs to processes, while maintaining the relevant data in a central company repository.ARIS Business Optimizer serves to analyze KPIs, e.g. for the purpose of cost calculations, in various areas suchas process cost management, for target costing or to set up BSC systems as part of the BSC solution. Datasources can include a variety of source systems, such as an ARIS database, SAP systems, etc.
Due to the fact that they are Web-based solutions, ARIS Business Architect and ARIS Business Designerenable distributed, company-wide modeling, analysis, and optimization of business processes, as well as thesetup of IT architectures via the Internet. ARIS Business Designer paves the way to professional BPM as it pro-vides user-friendly functionality that enables even unskilled, occasional users to perform modeling. Users areoptimally supported in the process design by the intuitive user interface and a variety of automated proce-dures. ARIS Business Architect is a Web-based tool that comes with extended administration and analysisfunctions for the skilled ARIS user or administrator. ARIS Toolset and ARIS Easy Design continue to be the lead-ing Windows-based solutions for designing business processes. All solutions can be used together in a dis-tributed scenario.
With ARIS Implementation Platform products, the gap between business and IT is closed. ARIS for SAP helpsdesign the process architecture of SAP solutions that have been optimally adapted to the company’s businessprocesses. Companies can use ARIS UML Designer to model all UML diagrams on the basis of UML standard1.4 and establish a relation to ARIS models. Thus, technological and technical content is integrated in one tool. This saves time and guarantees the quality of the software developed.
ARIS Controlling Platform solutions monitor and optimize business processes. ARIS Process PerformanceManager is a patented client/server software that uses KPIs to automatically visualize, document, evaluate, and graphically display a company’s current processes in real time. ARIS Risk & Compliance Manager is work-flow software that applies various rules to verify the operability of internal control systems.
1.1 System ArchitectureThe ARIS Platform system architecture enables internationally active companies to set up distributed scenar-ios for designing, analyzing, and optimizing process, IT, and software architectures.
Web-based products, such as ARIS Business Architect, ARIS Business Designer, and ARIS UML Designer, access a centrally set up and managed ARIS Business Server within a 3-level architecture from various inter-national locations. These products are designed to work even with a very low bandwidth (e.g., ISDN) andbeyond firewall limits.
The Web-based clients can be launched in the Web browser via a central link. Alternatively, they can beinstalled as a desk top application via setup or software distribution. In both cases, any required client updatecan be set up and controlled centrally to avoid follow-up costs for a further rollout and for associated qualityassurance measures.
A central database server (e.g., Oracle) is used for data management. All ARIS Clients access the databaseserver via ARIS Business Server and thus work on the basis of the same data.
To guarantee optimum load balancing and increase reliability (see page 8), more than one application server(ARIS Business Server) can be used.
With the central database server and a clustering of several application servers, ARIS Platform offers a highlevel of system scalability and availability.
The scalability is also reflected at the level of the products in use. For instance, a large number of modelerswho use ARIS Business Designer can be managed by relatively few users with ARIS Business Architect(access privileges, available reports, conventions/filters, etc.). Since ARIS Business Architect is Web-capable,administration can also be performed locally.

ARIS Business Publisher is integrated into the Administration module of ARIS Business Architect and ARISBusiness Architect for SAP. Administrators use these products to create exports of their ARIS databases afterthey have installed ARIS Business Publisher Server.
ARIS Business Publisher Server manages all Publisher exports. A Publisher export is a Web application basedon J2EE. It uses Java servlets and Java server pages (JSP) that need not only a Java environment (JDK), butalso a Web application server (e.g. Apache Tomcat) as a process environment. The data is kept in a relationaldatabase system and exchanged with the program via a JDBC interface.
The Derby and Apache Tomcat Web Application Server are installed automatically if you select the stan-dard installation for ARIS Business Publisher Server. In these database systems, a Publisher export can besimultaneously accessed by up to 10 users. If this is not sufficient, you require the Oracle database system(see page 30) or MS SQL Server 2005 (see page 30). All users can have simultaneous access to a Publisherexport in these systems, providing that this is permitted by your ARIS Business Publisher Server license.
ARIS Business Publisher Server runs reports after the standard installation is completed. You have the optionof also installing ARIS Business Publisher Server as a report server in order to optimize system performancewhen running reports.

The traditional Windows-based ARIS Platform products, such as ARIS Toolset and ARIS Easy Design, canoperate in parallel on the central ARIS Business Server via a Local Area Network (LAN). As these productsrequire a higher bandwidth, a terminal server, such as Windows Terminal Server with Citrix MetaFrame, is nec-essary when the products are used in the Wide Area Network (WAN).
2 Usage ScenariosVarious configuration levels are possible depending on the field of application and the number of users work-ing with ARIS products on a central repository. The usage scenarios described below include single-userinstallations and multi-user scenarios with hundreds of users.
2.1 Single-User Scenario (LOCAL)This scenario is suitable for the local use of ARIS products on one computer without connecting to a networkor a central server.
ARIS Clients (ARIS Toolset, ARIS Easy Design, ARIS Business Architect, or ARIS Business Optimizer), a localstandard database system (LOCAL), and a Business Server are installed on a desktop PC or a notebook.
ARIS Business Designer and ARIS UML Designer cannot access the local standard database system. However, the standard database system can be accessed by ARIS UML Designer if ARIS Business Architecthas been extended by a UML license key.
With the installed clients, operations can be performed simultaneously on a central server if a connection to anetwork exists.
After having installed ARIS Toolset or ARIS Business Architect you will also be able to use:
 ARIS Converter
ARIS Converter converts databases from ARIS 6.2x for use with the current version.
 ARIS Symbol Editor
Use ARIS Symbol Editor to create user-defined symbols in AMF format.
6
ARIS Platform
7
Default Server ScenarioThis scenario is suitable for:
 small to medium-sized multi-user environments
 the in-house training environment.
 worldwide use.
The database server uses the standard database system. If you want to use a database system other than thestandard database system you need to install the database server (e.g., Oracle) separately.
Fig. 4Default server scenario
The following modules are installed on a server computer:
 ARIS Business Server
 ARIS Site Manager (page 8)
Usually the standard database system (up to 50 users)
Optionally the Web Client Components (for use via a browser)
 ARIS Site Administrator (installed automatically)
Clients can now access the central server in a distributed scenario as described in the chapter on systemarchitecture (see page 4).
Manage ARIS Business Server using ARIS Site Administrator (backing up and restoring databases, sessionmanagement, etc.).

2.3 ARIS Site ScenarioThis scenario is suitable for:
large to very large multi-user environments (200 users and more)
large customer sites with centralized IT
 worldwide use
An ARIS Site is a combination of application servers and database servers that appear to the ARIS Client asone single server (i.e., with only IP address or computer name).
ARIS Business Server and the database server are installed on different computers and linked via a high-speednetwork (100 Mbit or faster).
Depending on the number of users, two or more ARIS Business Servers can be used.
Fig. 5:ARIS Site
ARIS Business Server should be optimized in terms of CPU and main memory. By using more than one ARISBusiness Server you achieve improved load balancing and a higher degree of reliability.
Oracle may be installed as the database system, for example. The database server’s hard drives should be opti-mized to accelerate data access (via a RAID system, if required).
ARIS Site Manager
ARIS Site Manager provides ARIS Business Server (the application server) with central internal services (e.g.,licensing checks, load balancing, central configuration data, etc.). ARIS Site Manager can be installed on anARIS Business Server or the database server. Only one ARIS Site Manager is installed per ARIS Site.
It is advisable that you integrate ARIS Site Manager into the database server security concept as the singlepoint of failure.
ARIS Site Administrator
ARIS Site Administrator can either be installed on an ARIS Business Server or on a local client. It is possibleto manage several ARIS Sites simultaneously with ARIS Site Administrator (backing up and restoring databas-es, session management, etc.).

3Additional Technical Information
Protocols UsedDifferent protocols are used for communication depending on the configuration level. ARIS requires a func-tioning TCP/IP infrastructure. At the full configuration level, TCP/IP, IIOP (CORBA), and HTTP are required.
Alternatively, data can be exchanged via IIOP protocol using SSL encryption (see ARIS Platform on theInternet/SSL, page 9).

3.1
ARIS Platform on the Internet/VPNIf ARIS Clients access ARIS Business Server on the intranet or in a virtual private network (VPN) environment,a firewall is not required. Communication between clients and ARIS Business Server is enabled by the IIOP(Internet Inter Object Request Broker Protocol) CORBA protocol.
3.2
ARIS Platform on the Internet/SSLData exchange between browser-capable ARIS Clients and ARIS Business Server can be encrypted using SSL(1024 bit RSA).
SSL capability is already integrated in ARIS and can simply be activated when required.
3.3
User Authentication by LDAPIt is possible to authenticate users centrally for ARIS Business Server using an LDAP server. This simplifiesadministration and avoids redundancy of user information. With LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol),only user names and passwords are checked. Function and access privileges must be assigned in theAdministration module.
To enable database login via LDAP, the current ARIS Business Server must be connected to an LDAP server.
Ensure that all entries are correct. Incorrect entries result in connection problems.

6Hardware and Software RequirementsThis section describes processor, memory, system configuration and software requirements the various serv-er and client computers must meet for running ARIS. For simultaneous use of other applications, a fasterprocessor, additional memory or a system extension may be required.
Depending on the application scenario (e.g., Merge or Simulation), large databases may cause extended run-times. Applications, such as ARIS Business Optimizer and ARIS Report, or functions, such as Backup andRestore, may require more RAM. On the other hand, if more RAM is available than listed below, runtime behav-ior might improve.
Minimum and maximum system requirements are specified in some cases. The minimum system requirementsmust be met in order for the ARIS products to work properly. Meeting the recommended system requirementswill assure good performance even with large data volumes. In general, it is advisable that you use up-to-datehardware taking into account the number of users who will be accessing the same ARIS Business Server (seepage 16).
Note
This manual describes the settings and functions that were valid at the time of going to press. Since manualcreation and software development are subject to different production cycles, the descriptions may differ fromthe actual settings and functions in the finished product. For details of these differences, refer to the readmefile accompanying the product. Please read this file and refer to it during installing and setup and when usingthe product.
Known RestrictionsKnowing how the system is going to be used is essential to determining an optimal technical configuration.
For specific issues, please contact IDS Scheer support.
Versions more recent than those listed below have not been tested or approved for use.
Note
Despite the approval of our software for operation with the listed operating system versions and other softwareand hardware requirements, we cannot eliminate any possibility of problems arising due to unpredictableincompatibility issues concerning certain hardware/software combinations.
For example, this applies to the use of certain printers/printer drivers or graphic cards/graphic card driversunder certain operating system versions. In individual cases, operational faults are possible when displayinggraphics in ARIS, when creating reports, or may occur in other Office applications, or in Web Publisherexports. When a hardware key is used for copy protection of software programs, poor performance of the par-allel interface may lead to delays or even system errors.
If you are using a combination of various technologies, take note of the manufacturers’ guidelines, in particu-lar the current release information provided on the manufacturers’ websites. You should always follow theinstructions in the installation manuals provided by the individual manufacturers.
Printers/Plotters
ARIS printouts are not generated correctly with the HP Design Jet 800 plotter driver and compatible drivers inHPGL mode.
Links
If you create a Publisher export and use links to large files (larger than 15 MB), you may require a large mem-ory for your ARIS Business Server. If you do not have sufficient memory, the export is canceled. Note also theerror sources described here (see page 12).
6.1
System White Paper
Reports in PDF Format
Windows Operating Systems
If you select PDF as your output format and create the report script in the draft view, you can only use thecharacter sets of the host on which ARIS Business Server is installed (i.e. those in C:\Windows\Fonts). Forexample, if you format a text with the Algerian character set and this is not contained in the relevant directo-ry, the standard character set for text output is used instead.
Additional character sets that you install in C:\Windows\Fonts are automatically included.
Unix Operating Systems
Unix operating systems have no default directory for character sets. If you install additional character sets ina directory of your choice, you need to modify the ArisServer.cfg file accordingly in theARIS7.1/server.xxxxxx/config directory.
To do this, change the highlighted expression in the ArisServer.cfg file as shown below:<reportdirlocation=”./templates/”ffoonntt__llooccaattiioonn==””//FFoonnttss//”” >
</reportdir>Characters
Due to a known error in the JVM (Sun) (http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=5040856), useonly Western European characters in the computer name.
If you have OLE objects whose file names are written with Japanese characters, for example, and publish themin a different language, like de or en, the names will not be displayed properly. These files cannot be opened. To be able to open these files, you need to replace the file names (e.g. Japanese) with English file names.
How to Start a Second Java-Based Product in the Browser
If, for example, you start ARIS Business Architect in the browser, the Java applet is executed in the back-ground in Internet Explorer. If you then try to start a second Java-based product (for example, ARIS BusinessOptimizer) the same way, this is prevented by the Java applet, which is still active.
To open the second Java-based product, you must close and re-open the browser so that the Java applet isterminated. You can then start ARIS Business Optimizer (or other Java-based product) in the browser.
When Links Work (and When They Do Not)
Links are used to connect resources. When you click on a link in the browser, the linked file is displayed. Manyfactors are involved in this process, which may cause errors in some cases. Therefore, ensure that all systemprerequisites are fulfilled. Links may no longer work after you install a security update for your browser that isnot approved by IDS Scheer.
If you create a Publisher export and use links to large files (larger than 15 MB), you may require a large mem-ory for your ARIS Business Server. If you do not have sufficient memory, the export is canceled.
One way to avoid links that do not work is to use file servers. You can manage all files linked in databases ona file server.
12
ARIS Platform
13
Type of File (MIME Type)
Not all browsers can display all files. In addition, some systems show files without their extensions becausethey are unable to determine the MIME type directly. Access to files may also be limited to a certain file type.Your system administrator may have defined the following restrictions in various parts of the system:
 Server
 Server operating system
 Client
 Client operating system
Central settings (for example, in the case of Active Directory)
 Proxy and proxy operating system
Correct Writing Convention
Depending on your system configuration, the way in which links are written may also cause errors. A URL isusually processed in 8-bit display mode. Unicode encoding requires special handling.
No problems are to be expected if:
you maintain links in English that contain no blank spaces or special charactersIf you maintain links in languages such as Japanese, for example, or links containing blank spaces andspecial characters, these links must be enclosed in quotation marks.
links are no longer than 1,024 characters Many systems cannot process links with more characters.
Type of Links
Depending on the domain from which a link is started or to which a link leads, you may need to distinguishbetween local and external links. Various errors may occur in this connection, based on your system and secu-rity settings.
 External Links
Errors do not occur with absolute links that are written correctly. All links to files copied from ARISBusiness Publisher to ARIS Business Publisher Server also work correctly. The browser simply handlesthese as external links.
 Local Links
All links to local files are subject to tight security restrictions. These restrictions vary widely betweenbrowsers and between different versions/patches. Links may no longer work after you install a securityupdate for your browser that is not approved by IDS Scheer.
Syntax
Local link without a drive shortcut
The link file:///C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/readme.txt opens a file in the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\readme.txt local directory structure.
Local link with a local drive shortcut
The link file:///U:/ARIS/businesspublisher/tomcat 5.5.16/RUNNING.txt opens a file in theU:\ARIS\\businesspublisher\tomcat 5.5.16\RUNNING.txt local directory structure. Here, “U“ rep-resents a direct link to a local directory.
External link with network drive shortcut
The link file:///V:/External/Version.txt opens a file in the V:\External\Version.txt network struc-ture. Here, “V2“ represents a direct link to a network drive.
 UNC link (Universal Naming Convention)
UNC path
The same link with varying syntax (for example, file://SERVER/www/trace.txt, file:///\\SERVER\www\trace.txt or file://///SERVER/www/trace.txt) opens a file in the\\SERVER\www\trace.txt drive structure.
You can use a UNC path to access any resource on the network directly, in other words, without a driveshortcut.
System White Paper
Security Threats
Not all browsers provide interactive information about possible security threats. Most block executable linksinstead.
However, Firefox issues a message in this case in the error console (Tools/Error_Console) but makes no dis-tinction between local and external links. Access to all local files is automatically blocked. You can unblockcertain sites by modifying or creating the file <Drive>:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<GENERATED_NAME>.default\users.js:
user_pref(“capability.policy.policynames”, “localfilelinks”);user_pref(“capability.policy.localfilelinks.sites”,“http://pcsomeone”);user_pref(“capability.policy.localfilelinks.checkloaduri.enabled”,“allAccess”);
Authorizations
Links may not work due to authorizations for the storage location of the linked files.
If you create links to files saved locally in a database, the links cannot be resolved if you use ARISBusiness Server. The links only work if you manage the database locally in the standard database sys-tem.
If you enabled the Copy documents check box on the Include links page in the Profile Wizard (View / Options / Publisher export profiles) and started ARIS Business Server as a service, makesure that your authorization concept permits access to the linked documents.

For example, if youwish to display Japanese characters, you must rename the font.properties.ja file to font.properties.
ARIS for SAP Functionality in the Web Publisher Export
If you make ARIS for SAP functionalities available in a Publisher export, please run the WPSETUP.EXE file onall hosts that have access to the export. You will find this file in the ARIS Web Publisher/WPSetup directo-ry on the installation medium.
You can also make the file available on the intranet. This way, all users can access and run the file.
You need to install a local SAP GUI for Windows, version 6.40 to 7.10.
Output
If you want to output documents in PDF format, with Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel, you must install AdobeReader Microsoft Office version 2000, 2002 or 2003. If popup blockers are activated for the domains, it may notbe possible in certain cases to open report outputs in PDF format from a Publisher export.

Note
If you are using a combination of various technologies, take note of the manufacturers’ guidelines, in particu-lar the current release information provided on the manufacturers’ websites. You should always follow theinstructions in the installation manuals provided by the individual manufacturers.
Special Requirements
If you create a Publisher export and use links to large files (larger than 15 MB), you may require a large mem-ory for your ARIS Business Server. If you do not have sufficient memory, the export is canceled.
6.11 VB Report Execution EnvironmentTo generate DOC and XLS output formats, Microsoft Office version 2000, 2002 or 2003 must be installed on thehost on which ARIS Site Manager is installed.
The system requirements depend on the relevant usage scenario and are described in the section entitledARIS Business Server/Hardware Requirements.
Note
The report server is deactivated by default to avoid using unnecessary system resources if you do not want torun VB scripts on an ARIS Business Server. These can always be run locally. To make the report server avail-able, configure the ArisLauncher.cfg file as follows.

Note
As a rule, all applications from which COM objects are used in ARIS databases must be installed on the com-puter you use for converting databases. Databases containing links to Microsoft Word and Microsoft Exceldocuments can be converted only if Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel version 2000 or higher are installed.
The system requirements (see page 14) depend on the relevant usage scenario.
For specific questions, please contact IDS Scheer support.
General Requirements and ApprovalsThis chapter describes general requirements and approvals.
JRE Versions
SUN Microsystems guarantees compatibility between the JRE patch levels. Therefore, the ARIS approvals forJREs are valid for all patch levels of a version.
For example, if JRE 1.5.0_02 and update patches are approved for an ARIS product, the approval is valid forboth JRE 1.5.0_02 and JRE 1.5.0_05, as well as for any subsequent patch level.
Note
SUN renamed the JRE versions. JRE 1.5.0_05 is now called JRE 5.0, Update 5. Approvals are also valid for sub-sequent updates.
ARIS products are tested using the JRE that is most current at the time of release.
Protocols Used
Different protocols are used for communication depending on the configuration level. ARIS requires a func-tioning TCP/IP infrastructure. At the full configuration level, TCP/IP, IIOP (CORBA), and HTTP are required.
Alternatively, data can be exchanged via IIOP protocol using SSL encryption (see ARIS Platform on the Internet/ SSL, page 9).
