Controversy Over Genocide

• Many Nations refuse to recognize this event, either as a genocide or recognize it in general. Turkey says that none of this ever happened, and even go on record as saying that the Armenians committed terrible war crimes and that Turkey had to respond to these senseless massacres of Turkish people.

Recognizing the Genocide

• After many, many years, countries have started to accept and recognize the Armenian Genocide. Many UN nations have done so, but Turkey remains steadfast in its refusal to recognize nor apologize for this horrendous act. The US took over 87 years to finally officially recognize the genocide with House Resolution 252.

Failure to Recognize

• The US refused to recognize this event for a long time, with many presidents stating that they would address this issue, then backing down when they actually met with the leaders of Turkey, the malefactors of this incident. George Bush went on television saying that he would have America officially recognize this, then went on television later saying that America had “worries more important than bringing up the past”.

Comparisons with Holocaust

• The Holocaust and what happened in Armenia are both considered to be genocides

• Hitler even referenced the Armenian Genocide when easing the doubts of his people, “As displayed in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Adolf Hitler, on ordering his military commanders to attack Poland without provocation in 1939, dismissed objections by saying ‘[w]ho, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?’ and thus set the stage for the Holocaust.”
