Science: the brain

•  Essential oils interact with chemical sensors in the brain, thus creating a response

•  Chemical sensors are also referred to as Olfactory Sensors that live in the Olfactory System of the brain

•  Olfactory System regulates our sense of smell and is connected to the Limbic System where emotions and memories are stored

•  When you breathe in an essential oil, it triggers a personal reaction – based on your own emotions, behaviors, memories, and experiences

Science: the chemistry

•  Chemistry – chemical constituents of a plant or essential oil linked to specific mood-altering properties

•  Floral: Typically composed of monoterpene alcohols and esters, which provide Calming characteristics

•  Harmonizing characteristics of monoterpene alcohols like Terpinen-4-OL in Melaleuca also offers powerful cleansing properties

•  Mint: Commonly known to be Energizing and uplifting due to a high concentration of ketones

•  Spice: Phenols provide warming properties

•  Tree, herb, and grass: Primarily include sesquiterpines, oxides, and esters, which help promote soothing, grounding emotions and Renewing feelings •  Citrus: Contain chemical components like beta-pinene, monoterpenes,

and limonene, which contain significant Uplifting characteristics
