Both types are supplied with2 incoming cables:1. A power supply cable, which alwayshas 3 conductors, color coded for differentvoltages in accordance with the NEC.Conductors for 115 volt pumps are white, black and green, and conductors for230 volt pumps are red, black and green, and these colors are standard for allmodels which operate on line voltage.2. An overflow alarm cable, which isdesigned to break the communication
wire between the condenser and theevaporator in case the water level in thereservoir rises to an unacceptable level. This cable also has 3 conductors, gray(common), purple (normally closed) andorange (normally open), and this colorcoding is identical for all pump models.CONNECTION OF THE OVERFLOWSWITCH IS MANDATORY. FAILURETO DO SO WILL INVALIDATEMANUFACTURERS WARRANTYAND ALMOST CERTAINLY LEAD TOFLOODING AND WATER DAMAGE.NOTE: The overflow switch contacts are a
separate volt-free circuit which operatesentirely independently from the powercircuit that automatically switches thepump on and off as the water level risesor subsides.NOTE ALSO that the overflow switchis electronic and draws its powerdirectly from the PCB in the pump,so the switch itself cannot operate
unless the pump is powered.NOTE: The overflow switch is designedfor a maximum load of 5 amps upto 230 volts, which is normally morethan enough for most Minisplits asthe current and the voltage carried inthe communication wire are usuallywell below this.Standard wiring diagrams for mostMinisplit manufacturers are availableat WWW.EZTRAP.COM orWWW.ASPENPUMPSUSA.COM for
download, or can be emailed or faxedon request. If the 5 amp limit is exceeded, it will benecessary to use a single pole switchingrelay to handle this current to prevent theelectronics in the pump from burning out.Specific wiring diagrams for this type ofinstallation are available from EZ-TRAPon request. Some Minisplits have communicationswires which are sensitive because theyutilize proprietary operating protocols, and these may have to be wired in adifferent way. In these cases the overflowswitch must be wired only according to awiring diagram dedicated to that partic-ular manufacturer and/or model series.Specific wiring diagrams for this typeof installation are also available fromEZ-TRAP on request.
Some Minisplits include a dedicated set ofcontacts on the PCB in the evaporator into
which the overflow wires can be connectedas per the specific wiring diagramsprovided by that manufacturer, and if anoverflow does occur, the unit willautomatically turn off and an alarm LEDwill flash on the control panel of the unit.If this is not the case and an externalaudio or visual alarm is required, this caneasily be done by connecting the orangewire which is energized only when thewater level in the reservoir becomesabnormally high.
In order to connect an external alarm, itis necessary for the communication wireto carry a stable AC voltage anywherebetween 12 and 230 volts. If an external alarm is required, the orangewire would be connected to one terminalof the alarm device which must use thesame voltage as the communications wire, which will have to be determined priorto installation. If no external alarm isrequired, the orange wire is not used andthe end is taped off to isolate it.If the alarm device is powered by 12 to115 volts, it will be necessary to connect
the other terminal of the alarm deviceto a neutral to complete the circuit. If the alarm device is powered by 230volts, it will be necessary to determinethe polarity of the communication wire(line 1 or line 2) and then to connect theother terminal of the alarm device to theother line (1 or 2) to complete the circuit.
SEE PAGE 3 FOR DETAILED DIAGRAMS OF SEQUENCE OF OPERATION and PAGE 4 FOR PUMP SELECTION SPECIFICATIONS
Minipumps are not designed to rundry as they are both cooled andlubricated by the water flowingthrough them. They therefore requirea float switch to detect the presence
of water in the drain pan andactivate the pump only when wateris present. For this reason, a Minipumpalways consists of 2 elements:1. The pump body, whichincludes an electronic PCB andthe pump motor.2. The reservoir, which containsthe filter and the switching mechanismto activate the pump. This must alwaysbe kept level and clean to facilitateoperation of the float switch andthe filter must be cleaned regularly.
When these are supplied as 2 separateitems as in the Orange or Aqua series, they are known as a SPLIT TYPE PUMPand the 2 elements are connectedtogether with a length of 1/4 vinyl tube
and a communication cable, both ofwhich are usually around 6 feet long, butmay be extended if required.
When these 2 elementsare combined togetherin 1 unit as in the Limeseries, they are known asa MONOBLOC PUMP in which the
pump and reservoir share a commonbody and no connecting tubesor wires areneeded.Mini & Maxi Orange

WHEN PUMP STARTS AND BEGINS SUCKING WATER OUT OF RESERVOIR, AN AIRLOCK WILL BE CREATEDUNLESS AN AIR INTAKE OPENING IS PROVIDED ON TOP OF RESERVOIR. BECAUSE CONDENSATE FLOWFROM DRAIN PAN INTO RESERVOIR RELIES ON GRAVITY, RESERVOIR MUST ALWAYS BE BELOW DRAINPAN AND IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A BLOCKAGE MAY CAUSE THE WATER LEVEL INTHE CONDENSATE DRAIN INLET HOSE BETWEEN PAN AND RESERVOIR TO BACK UPUNTIL IT GETS HIGHER THAN THE TOP OF THE RESERVOIR. IF THIS HAPPENS,THE WATER WILL BLEED OUT OF THE AIR INTAKE OPENING AND TO PREVENTTHIS FROM OCCURRING, A 6 x1/4 BREATHER TUBE IS FITTED ONTO THEAIR INTAKE OPENING TO EXTEND IT SO THE TOP IS A MINIMUMOF 1ABOVE THE TOP OF THE DRAIN PAN.

All pump models incorporate a filter in thereservoir which must be cleaned regularly.A detailed explanation of this will befound in diagram C below.
All pump models require a mandatorybreather tube to prevent an airlock in thereservoir while the pump is operating.A detailed explanation of this will befound in diagram D below.
ASPEN Mini models are available in24V, 115V and 230V AC.ASPEN Maxi models are available in115V & 230V AC only.
If the current in the communication wireis low voltage electronic or DC, it willgenerally be difficult or impossible toisolate the other leg required to operatean alarm, and in this case, the orangewire is simply taped up and not used.Connection details for an externalalarm will be found in diagram Abelow.Generally, most installers do not connectup an external alarm and this is why ourwiring diagrams show the orange wirebeing taped off and not used.
NOTE THAT THE OVERFLOW ALARMCIRCUIT NEVER DEACTIVATES THEPUMP WHICH REMAINS LIVE ATALL TIMES.The power supply to the pump shouldalways be connected to the incomingpower terminal block on the evaporatorto ensure that the pump is poweredwhenever the evaporator is powered.
It is not a good idea to hard wire thepump from a separate circuit, or to powerit from a receptacle like a conventionaltank pump because either of these can beinadvertently isolated or the plug could beaccidentally removed. In either case the evaporator wouldcontinue to produce water, but therewould be no power to operate the pumpor the overflow switch, so a flood would
occur and this is unacceptable. In spite of this, some local codes actuallycall for this type of wiring connection andif local code officials insist, thisrequirement will have to be met eventhough it may contradict the Aspen wiringinstructions. Some codes also require a disconnectclose to the evaporator and, if this isinstalled, sometimes the pump is powereddirectly from the disconnect. In this case,it is vital that the pump is powered
from the outgoing terminals on thedisconnect, not the incoming ones,to ensure that if the evaporator isisolated, the pump will be isolatedas well.Details of this will be found indiagram B below. All manufacturers of Minisplit airconditioners use different wiring protocols,so the communications wire varies from
one unit to another, as well as from onemodel to another, and for this reason, allwiring diagrams in the installationmanuals are generic.Consult EZ-TRAP for factoryapproved wiring diagrams for allthe major manufacturers. Thesecan be found on WWW.EZTRAP.COMor WWW.ASPENPUMPSUSA.COM orcan be emailed or faxed on request.
