Asset Protection and Product Enhancement

2

Loss of life and damage to propertydue to corrosion induced accidentsis an expensive phenomenon in the energy Industry.

Monitoring for corrosion, particularly internal, in pressurized pipelines is essential and mandated by most governments of the world.

Corrosion weight loss coupons are a proven method for monitoring internal corrosion rates.

The ability to expose the coupon to the process under pressurized and flowing conditions cannot be understated.

3

Corrosion Weight Loss Coupons

Precisely weighed prior to and after exposure to the process.

The resulting loss of metal is termed as mills per year (MPY)

Accurate Tool Company, aDivision of Sentry Equipment Corporation, has been manufacturing insertable corrosion weight loss coupon holders, injection atomizers, and sample probes for 30 years.

Their unique designs incorporate patented features for safe and easy use in high pressure applications.

Chemical Injection Methods “Pros & Cons”

14

Criteria required to select the proper chemical injection method:

1) The treatment required, proper measurement of the contaminant or condition and chemical selected

2) Process conditionsa. Process Fluid (i.e. natural gas, crude oil, water)b. Pressure (min-normal-max)c. Temperature (min-normal-max)d. Flow rate (min-normal-max)e. Process density

3) Chemical density relative to water

4) Injection site specificsa. Pipeline diameter or vessel size b. Injection port size and type c. Utilities to power pump

Chemical Injection Methods “Pros & Cons”

15

Typical Chemical Injection System

16

Pulsation dampeners are a valuable addition to any well designed chemical injection system.

Pulsation dampeners are used to decrease pressure spikes in the pump discharge as well as becoming a secondary pump.

The pulsation dampener contains compressed stored energy which discharges with the back stroke of the pump. Ultimately, the pump stroke time can be slowed down reducing valuable wear and tear.

17

Gas detection tubes are the most widely used field measurement method for determining contaminant levels. Keep in mind, the accuracy on stain tubes is +/- 25%. “Is the H2S measurement 3 ppm or 5 ppm?” “Perhaps we should pull 5 tubes and average.”“Nah, let’s just set our chemical pump output on the high side as a precaution.”

18

Can you Afford Inaccurate Measurement?

When measuring H2S, tubes that change color to purple or blue give false high readings.

Handheld analyzers provide an accurate, quick measurement of H2S.

Close only counts with…

17

DOT tariff limit on H2S is 4 ppm or 4 BBs out of a million!

How close are you measuring?

19

A mixing probe is the best method for batch treating, injecting thicker liquids into a gas stream, and injecting liquids into a liquid stream.

Dispersion and Distribution Requires a lot of real estate and is velocity dependent.

Gas Flow

Gas or Liquid Flow

Liquid Flow

Atomization (the liquid mimics a gas) is required for chemical scavengers when applied to a gas process.

Quills should only be used when injecting liquids into a liquid process. Results are inconsistent when injecting liquids into a gas stream with velocities < 15 ft /second.

Unless the plan is to coat the pipeline with chemical, strong consideration should be given to the placement of the injection device in relation to elbows and obstructions such as valves, regulators, and orifice plates.

The shortage of real estate prevents the desired long, straight, obstruction-free runs of pipe. Complete atomization of the injected chemical becomes critical!

The Reality Is…

21

Best Injection Point

22

Chemical injection is not merely an afterthought. Rather, it takes considerable planning for a safe, reliable, and efficient system!

23

Enforce the quality specifications of natural gas, crude oil, liquid petroleum gas, and water precisely and efficiently. The Enforcer™ targets the culprit, H2S, CO2, scale, paraffin, hydrates, or internal corrosion and automatically injects the correct dosage of chemical to return the product to custody transfer specifications or reduce the corrosion rate within the pipeline or vessel. This controlled injection of chemical results in a significant reduction in chemical consumption and significant cost savings. Although some measurement technologies can give false readings, the Enforcer™ utilizes only those technologies that avoid this pitfall. The Enforcer™ incorporates the best technologies available for a trouble free and reliable watchdog 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Automated Chemical Injection Systems

The heart of the Enforcer product line is a PLC With touch screen navigation, SD memory card, USB connectivity, and Built-in Ethernet.

The ReEnforcer™ incorporates all the features of the Enforcer™ plus an atomization contact vessel(s) and a chemical recycling and reclamation process.

A single atomization contact vessel will treat up to 10 MMSCFD of gas. A second vessel is added to treat up to 20 MMSCFD of gas. The skid design allows for future expansion.

36

37

38

Atomization chambersjoin to form a cross.

Gas enters the gauntlet of chambers where contact with atomized chemical is maximized.

Treated gas passes through slots at the bottom of the chambers, then rises through the vessel.

Condensates drop to the vessel bottom and accumulate for recycling. 39

Complete atomization of the chemical is critical to the efficiency of the Enforcer™ and ReEnforcer™. The “Atomization Optimization” feature activates an alarm and initiates backup atomization if a particular nozzle or series of nozzles is not optimized.

Summary

Chemical curatives improve the quality of hydrocarbon products and protect assets and human health.

A treatment plan takes into consideration:Contaminants or conditions to be mitigatedThe method used to measure the contaminants or conditionsPhysical properties of chemicalsProcess conditions Pump rates and efficiencyInjection methods and locations

The most overlooked and misunderstood component of the plan is the chemical dispersion and distribution method.

42

Automation of a precisely engineered chemical injection system maximizes the efficiency of the chemical treatment while providing real time data.

Accurate measurement of contaminants or conditions

Pump rates are automatically adjusted based on precise measurement of contaminants, chemical concentration data and tank level feedback.

Operators have realized cost savings up to 90% when a complete automated engineered system is utilized.
